RE: The Apology Thread
Apologizing is for the apologizer. Asking forgiveness is for the recipient. At least, that's how Yom Kippur was always explained to me and why we ask forgiveness instead of apologizing.

RE: Good TV
Carnival Row is my everything. It's a steampunk fantasy sort of Syrian refugee allegory with a bisexual protagonist and the costumes and the aaaaaaaaa
I've never had my tastes pandered to so hard with media before. Is this what it's like to be a straight white man? If so, daaaaamn.

@Lithium What about any of this makes you think coming to post something like this here makes you look good?

RE: The Work Thread
Videos shown to different classes today:
Middle Egyptian: Strongbad's "Trogdor" and "Everybody to the Limit" because of the Egyptian expression r Dr.f (literally "to the limit")
Mythology: "Wait for Me" from Hadestown (Tony Award performance)
This is why I will never be taken seriously in academia. Well, that and my ongoing feud with Salima Ikram about rats.

RE: An Apology to BSO and BSU.
The sad part is that he's a fantastic roleplayer. I actively miss scening with him. I just don't miss all the bullshit that came along with it. I hope he gets some help for his issues and becomes stronger and more stable and less bullshitty. If he came to me with an actual, earnest apology that acknowledged what he did and what he will do to prevent it happening again, I'd give him another chance.
Speaking of apologies, some of the best advice I was ever given is that a proper apology has those two parts: An acknowledgment of the wrong done and how one plans to prevent the wrong being repeated.

RE: Random funny
A recent find in Egypt (detailed here https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2019/12/these-mysterious-egyptian-head-cones-actually-existed-grave-find-reveals) led to me making this meme:

RE: Historical MUSHes
@egg said in Historical MUSHes:
I would love to see a historical MUSH set in a non-American/European setting. My fantasy is to create a game set in 1930s Shanghai (an incredible multi-national destination filled with intrigue! Spies! And great fashion!), but I lack the coding skills, and probably the patience...
I'm an Egyptologist, and if I had the time and skills, part of me would love to run an ancient Egypt themed game.

RE: Getting Young Blood Into MU*'ing
As one of the newer MUers I've encountered (I'm about three years into the hobby), these are some of the unwritten conventions I had to learn the hard way:
- Pose order and how people like to handle that
- It was hard for me to learn that most people aren't into lots of OOC chatting
- Pose length and what to put in my poses -- I didn't realize it was expected that I should not only write what my character does, but that everyone (or the majority of folks) in the scene with me generally expects to be acknowledged, usually by name.

RE: RL things I love
Starting Arabic lessons tomorrow! Next time I go on dig, I won't say dumb shit accidentally! From now on, all of the dumb shit I say will be 100% intentional.

RE: The Dark Side of online Role-Playing
As someone who, at age 14, sneaked off to meet someone who turned out to be a literal child molester I had met on the internet in Manhattan without telling my family where I was going... I get it. I was lucky that this particular criminal didn't have plans for me, but it's still sobering.
I also would have been an uncomfortable situation of my mother had read all of my logs, especially since most of them were just silly and boring and sometimes I complained about my parents.
Earnest communication and interest in what I was doing would have gone a long way, if my mother had been capable of that.

RE: The Dark Side of online Role-Playing
@Kestrel There's that, and then there's what this thread has turned into, which is @Carex saying that kids who rp sex are little sluts who can handle his digital dick. There's room for discussion on the former. The latter needs to be shut down HARD.

RE: It's where you putcher weed ...
I play Brianna on Arx as a functional, athletic person who regularly smokes that game's version of weed to unwind. As a habitual user, she knows her limits and prefers to remain functional.
IRL, I use cannabis to help with chronic pain caused by benign nerve tumors, and I'm very much the same way.

RE: The Dark Side of online Role-Playing
@Ghost This is where you have a discussion with your kid about boundaries. We all like to find ways to get our rocks off. Talk to them about the difference between reading a dirty story in a book or on a fanfiction site and creating interactive sexual content with an adult. Explain that even if they don't know you are a minor, the adult involved is committing a crime. Talk about safe ways to explore the things they want to explore.
