I dislike mutter code but it's just a peeve. I prefer transparency, especially for the monitoring and logging reasons others have mentioned.

Transparency is easier to code, too.

      Clusters are a must.

Option to make all places look like their own in-locaton channel system seems alright. I would probably opt to keep it more quiet.

      1. Its primal function MUST be to reduce spam for EVERYONE

Disagreed. Its prime function is to create an in-game logical separation within a physical play-space. Reducing spam is a high priority, but we already have a few commands that reduce spam: Page and @Emit for two.

And you know how much I hate spam.

What do you guys think about grid descs that are non-static?

I.e changes depending on the time of day and/or season and/or weather, assuming that is part of the game code?

So much that I made a very extensive ictime() function that would report from weather to moon phase and visibility. It started as "IC Time" and ended up being "IC Conditions". This way, it's trivial for anyone to code whatever description changes they want.

Or has the occasional automatic @emit like 'A cold breeze whispers through the alleyway.' or 'Something splashes in the water amidst the reeds.' or the like.

It may have changed, but people started loving flavor emits, but came to hate them. Do it for the flavor, but realize that you may be reversing it.

A switch whether or not someone see it would be interesting, but then you'd end up with people reacting to things you don't see. Make it all or nothing.

      It's easier.

Also, you don't hate people any more than I do. Life sometimes sucks being an optimist, doesn't it.

@Thenomain said in Cultural differences between MUDs and MUSHes:

Can you please frame the example situation as it would happen on a MUD? That is, you asked someone if you could come to their house, they said nope sorry too busy, and that's off-putting to you. What is your cultural expectation?

      OOCly, it wouldn't happen.

So you wouldn't know where people were, and therefore you couldn't make the decision to join or not join.

Then your expectations are coming from something that is not related to MUD. Either that, or the situation you gave, stopping by someone's IC location, is different. How would it happen in a public sense?

more edits, I love the edits: I used to page everyone in a room with 'you hear a knocking at the door, knock knock'. This is partially because as I code, I know exactly how the code works.

Also, there's nothing wrong for you and your cohort stopping by the scene anyway, but if you want things to be more IC, how would you know to go there? Again, what were your expectations when you paged? How does your culture have it go?

Some day I will code or find the code from...LA?...where people could bunch together in small groups in any room, making their own gathering-type 'places'.

Optimism... is not my friend right now.

Believing that people can accept your sincerity and treat it with any amount of honor is an act of trust. I will put it this way, tho, from one person who repeatedly gets burned to another: If you don't try, you'll never know.

From one person who repeatedly gets burned to another, though: You can test the waters without wearing your heart on your sleeve. There is some fun in being a robot, too, when you've got a good bunch of friends who know better.

      The pie's pretty good.

      Get better, Surr.

    • RE: Cultural differences between MUDs and MUSHes

Incidentally, I have all but stopped RPing on Fallcoast because almost every time I try to page someone with "want to rp?" I get "no". Yet when I just show up in scenes, I enjoy myself. Part of my diatribe must be me gathering up the courage to finding scenes the old fashioned way: Seeing who's where and going there and seeing what happens next. Hell, this is how I did things on Haunted Memories, and everyone hated me until they found out I played Vera and I can't tell you how many people told me that I was awesome. And that was only, what, five years ago?

Yeah, I think it's time for us to change it up again.

      @deadempire

I’m the opposite regarding rosters. I don’t know which version of that character I’m talking to, and so I’m thrown further when I find out that what I believed to be fact isn’t known or acted upon by the current player. Maybe once I learn the cultural way to negotiate this it won’t be so jarring.

      @faraday

      Because immersion.

Because that's why 'knock' code. Because that's why radio code. Because it's nice to have a simple thing to type (pp thenomain=You jerk!) that also engages people in the room with you.

I've coded some of those horrible systems where it remembers phone numbers, would ring to someone's home if they didn't have a cell, people could disguise their voices, and all of that needs to die in a fire. But the simple system to create 'bob is on the phone laughing his ass off' speaks strongly to some players.

That's why I do it. Under duress in this case, but I feel my job as coder is to support the game. Engaging players is supporting the game at the highest level, even higher than making staff's job easier.

Trying to steer the discussion back to likes and dislikes about big city grids - so if you have a game with a big city setting, and there is a grid, what shape do you like/dislike?

      Like: Comma.

Dislike: Period with two spaces after it.

For grids I personally prefer all caps with three exclamation points, the description equivalent of the Brutalist architecture for when you want to feel like a room would murder you if only it could move.

Having all-caps with three exclamation points, it has succeeded at stabbing me well and truly in my Strunk & White. It may be fatal.

We are trying to both help you understand and understand ourselves how the culture works. What, you thought we knew? A lot of us are arguing with ourselves and around you.

It now sounds like the sour taste in your mouth is that you didn't have the opportunity to have that scene collapse ICly.

To which I am going to tell you again: Then next time collapse it ICly, just maintain respect for the game and its players.

      Sheesh.

So I was curious about this Mercy Thompson and looked it up and...I have a question that I'm going to ask in what may appear to be snarky but this is honest and straight-forward: Once you get past the Mary Sue special-snowflake romance-novel fan-service nature of the image of the woman on the cover, is this a decent series?

Okay, that was snarky, but you get what I mean.

      1. The Trappist-1 site, now that they've found a solar system with seven Earth-sized planets. You've probably heard of this one by now, but it's still cool as hell.

      2. An AP News article originally titled "Teen suicide attempts fell as same-sex marriage became legal". Also cool as hell.
