    • How To Treat Your Players Right

In some other thread, in the middle of much memeage, there was this:

@mietze said in Intersectional MU* Community (Interest Check):

While we are on the subject, I'd also like to say that I have seen more gross creepy behavior on mushes that loudly proclaim how much they are above rapey stats and how much they look down on play involving themthan I have on open season ones. Maybe it's because if you already shame folks it makes those experiencing bad things around those subjects less willing to come forward? IME predatory behavior often thrives where there is an incentive to keep things very very secret due to shaming.

Though I have been very happy on the game I currently play, and am reasonably sure if someone were to be receiving very bad ooc behavior from a play partner they'd engages in iffy/unsanctioned but private play with, they would be listened to.

      This is worth discussing.

I just got one of those, a job I've applied for inside my company several times. In spite of the cheerleading of my immediate bosses, I'm finally at the point where my dedication to this company is not reciprocated.

Yes, that's normal, but I've seen it happen for this job. Just not for me.

      Strength to ya.

If all I'm getting is vague reports of "Bob is harassing Susie and Janey" and Susie won't tell me anything's wrong and Janey isn't even on the game any more, I'm not going to take action.

"Hey dude, apparently you're being a dick. Stop being a dick." It's not difficult.

Me: "Are you being a dick to Susie and Janey? Because I heard you were and I don't like the sound of it if it's true."

      Bob: "But! But!"

Me: "If it's not true, I apologize for stressing you out, but I have to look into this. I hope you understand."

New thread: Why does @Coin talk down to black people?

He talks down to everybody. Why are you singling out the blacks? Are you racist?

This reminds me of the joke most likely to get me downvoted:

If I were the new Hitler, I would kill all the Jews, and one clown.
      (response: Why the clown?)
See? Nobody cares about the Jews.

@Ganymede That's cute, but doesn't at all relate to what I said.

      I disagree with you.

You disagree on Ganymede's style, fine, but I don't think players have the inalienable right to complete transparency. You can't make anyone do anything except not log in. And sometimes that's a game of whack-a-mole.

Sometimes I wonder if you've even tried to run a game, dude.

      --

edit: The conceit of Gany's example was someone not involved in the complaint paging staff asking about it.

Some day I'm going to end up in jail or banned from my favored grocery store due to a confrontation that starts with telling someone that they skipped someone in line at the grocery and wouldn't get to the back of the line. Not that I can throw a punch but I can sure as hell stand in front of a cart and refuse to move.

If everyone is going to throw up their hands and say "Well he wasn't banned after one complaint, why even bother?" That is not my problem.

Some of the best players are the least tolerant toward bullshit, and if you're losing the players you want to keep then you better damn well pay attention even if people aren't coming to you.

That is, sometimes you have to make things your problem. It's like any code that even if it works does not work the way you want. That's why you write unit tests. That's why you listen to user experiences.

@Thenomain My thesis, to borrow your term, is that some assurance needs to be obviously made that complaints will be handled appropriately.

I do not think your concept of "appropriate" is appropriate. Neither does Ganymede or Faraday. So how do you deal with the universe when it does not work the way you want?

@thenomain I'd be fine if they just made another Wonder Woman movie with some cameos from Jason Momoa and called it "Justice League."

Let's just give Momoa his own movie and cameos in Wonder Woman's set of movies, yes.

      @Tinuviel

"if we don't see problems stopping at all when complaints are made, why should we complain?"

This is an actual Begging The Question. You've given 'we must see the problems stopping' (and all of your examples have been them stopping right away) as the solution to the question of "why should we ask?"

Faraday's Answer: Ask staff. Also, not my problem.
Ganymede's Answer: Ask staff. Also, Dadaism.
Thenomain's Answer: Be more patient. Also possibly, ask staff.

If people don't trust staff enough to ask, that's a problem that has no real solution. I've been thanked by players for not publicizing a problem.

But it comes down to: You cannot expect anyone to be psychic. Even I, with my unusual belief that I should try harder to know what's going on in my own game, have to rely on people to approach me if they want my help.

If this isn't good enough for you, I personally don't see why it's not good enough for you.

On a way more serious issue, what the fuck has been happening in Hollywood? Dustin Hoffman is now apologising for sexual assaults he 'may have' committed?

Damn. I mean I figured things weren't great in that industry but damn.

      Repetition causes a normalizing effect.

In this case, the normalization is abstracting away from something that should never have been normal.

I believe that it keeps rolling because we've already spent far more than a year criticizing Trump for these things; it's going to internalize (and normalize) sooner or later, and that time just happens to be now.

Maybe enough people are realizing that double-standards don't stand up to enough scrutiny.

I just got my boss to check the thtermostat, after three months of complaining.

My department's thermostat, which lives outside my department, was set permanently to 'chill'. The AC was always on. It was on when it was 70 outside, it was on when it was 30 outside. I live with low blood pressure and not a whole lot of body weight. My fingers were visibly cold and I could only get someone to check it just now, because they finally felt it.

Really, guys, you can trust your employees more. You can. Really.
