    • RE: Coming Soon: Arx, After the Reckoning

I edited what I said because at second reading it wasn't what I meant. I didn't mean to shit on the game, and I certainly didn't think that I did. I absolutely question "give us your email because it doesn't matter" and what I see as the poor logic in saying it's "not a big deal". Put up with it? Sure. Attacking someone's reasoning for saying it's not a big deal? No. And I'm not even talking to you here.

You know, no matter how many times I try to bury the hatchet with you, Kanye, you appear to want to take everything I say in its worst context. Go you, I suppose, and I know you're going to read this and just come up with reasons why you're right, but I left the Hog Pit for a reason. I'm tired of this. I'm done with it. Shitting on someone you think shit on you then blaming them for editing themselves to look better is going to be all on you. Your game is okay, you have decent ideas as staff, but you are not such a good person that I'm going to take two posts in a row shit-talking me.

Please stop trolling me. I'm tired of it, and I've stopped trolling you back. Take the high road please. Thanks.

    • RE: House Rules vs Rules as Written

@Warma-Sheen said in House Rules vs Rules as Written:

I think the issue with places that have "excessive" HRs (and maybe HRs in general) is that people just want to change the game to fit them rather than playing it the way it was presented, but don't want to own up to that.

Changing rules to alter the play style is not only acceptable, but White Wolf's "Rule Zero" was explicitly to do just this.

There are systems where house ruling changes the underlying system, where you have to be super careful and know about game balance and pinpoint identify what you are trying to accomplish. World/Chronicles of Darkness is not one of them.

Misattributing the reasons is a peeve already covered by @Coin.

@Roz said in Sensitive cultural/political/religious aspects of game themes.:

"Well, this is what it is, but good luck finding the game you want!"

This is exactly why a problem player will stick around. To many, it's better to suffer through the things you disagree with and actually get to play, than to sit on the sidelines. The idea that you must agree 100% with a game to play there is dangerous, that you can't be critical is poisonous. You can demand respect, but you get the respect that you give. All game culture is shaped by how staff acts, no matter what they say they want, no matter what's written down in a news file or on a wiki.

Throwing someone's dissatisfaction in their face is not good behavior.

The only real problem w/The Good Place is that either:
      a) It will have to end at some point, which, boo: no more Good Place

I did not catch the recent twist. They need to end it, yes, because this is clearly a story about four...no, six...well a lot of people, but specifically one. I believe that their challenge is how to end it in a way that's satisfactory, that's not so saccharine and maybe not too clean. I don't think I have to worry about the second one; if anything The Good Place does over and over is how complex even simple things are.

But in the meantime: Let it continue this streak.

    • RE: Real World Peeves, Disgruntlement, and Irks.

Because I cannot express my frustrations enough, this quote from Douglas Adams will have to do:

“The major problem—one of the major problems, for there are several—one of the many major problems with governing people is that of whom you get to do it; or rather of who manages to get people to let them do it to them.

To summarize: it is a well-known fact that those people who must want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it.

To summarize the summary: anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job.

To summarize the summary of the summary: people are a problem.

And so this is the situation we find: a succession of Galactic Presidents who so much enjoy the fun and palaver of being in power that they very rarely notice that they’re not. And somewhere in the shadows behind them—who? Who can possibly rule if no one who wants to do it can be allowed to?”

    • RE: Superhero Games: Quest For Villain PCs

The purpose of the villain in any story is to be foiled by the hero. That is, I think before you can have villain players, you must first have good hero players who are willing to allow villains, and villain players who are willing to be foiled. I don't see it being possible without this kind of agreement.

    • RE: How important are rooms poll

      @Griatch

Mushes are more like Puzzle Pirates or URU; technically MMOs but not what most people think of when they talk about the genre. There are few "zones", and character ability does not unlock new areas, or at least no where at the rate that a game like Warcraft does.

Muds are the dungeon crawl that Lord Bishop turned into the MMO; conflict is programmed, automated, so a larger set of zones is critical. I can't speak for the RPI or cross-breeds where challenges come from mini games like crafting as much as mobs.

I wouldn't be surprised to find that the more the game relies on social interaction, codified or otherwise, the smaller the grid will be.

I have run games with a moderate to smaller player base with a hundred rooms, knowing that most of the rooms would barely be used, because it set the tone and pressed home the setting. This happened slowly, over time, by the players' need.

I think pushing the wrong sized grid on the players can easily backfire, and stresses the importance of an aware build staff.

    • RE: Hyper Focused Game Setting

My favorite space setting is "space station". It's certainly small enough that everyone has an excuse to know one another.

I would be quite thrilled to see a game with a tight scope. I think that Lords & Ladies games have this advantage; the setting may be wide, but the pool the characters comes from is not.

White Wolf when it was White Wolf loved to go after people for sharing their IP online. But they seemed to leave games online alone, even if they were sharing the material at the same time. Does anyone understand the difference in their reasoning?

Many original White Wolf staffers were Mushers.
