      @Thenomain I thought you didn't read comics?

I read them, I just don't like them. I know this because I read them. Sometimes under great duress, when @Coin bugs me for the fifteenth time that week.

Mostly, tho, it's the superhero comics, but since 99.995% of the time when someone says "comic mu*" they mean "superhero mu*", I just assume that people forget that there are other amazing illustrated serials out there.

      Like Fables.

I would smack that artist's player so hard for breaking the "you know what I mean" expectiation. As @faraday says, when does it end? Do you nitpick over the dialect? Over the idea of an artist daring speak back to a noble? I bet that artist arrived at the front door too!

We are modern people. We must make allowances, or be less snitty about correcting them.

[OOC] Artist says, "How about 'steel gray' instead?"

Fallout 4's writing of NPCs is without par. New Vegas' writing of plot is without par. All we need to do is develop New Vegas with the budget of Fallout 4.

There was a guy on Arx who insisted on figuring out if cement was invented in that world. How were they making the kinds of buildings they were without it? How?
But that's not a very interesting question to answer.

Didn't see this until @Pyrephox responded.

I love the history of technology. I revel in it. It is super-interesting to me. I have probably watched every James Burke BBC show, certainly every episode of Connections and The Day The Universe Changed. Maybe I want to start an industrial revolution. Isn't it plausible that I pursue it as a character goal?

Staff may not have the time nor education nor inclination to chase that theme. I feel exactly the same way when people press for more detailed crafting rules, but goddamn some people like themselves some crafting mini-games! It's okay for staff to say that they aren't going to focus on something, but it's certainly okay for players to think that it's interesting.

Video games with ending "boss-fight" scenarios. They really need to let you scum save, or at least save-point somewhere in the middle there so when you inevitably die because you have no idea what's going on you don't have to start all over again. Unless the game is set up as an endurance test, surprising you at the end like this may be a usual kind of thing but it's nonsense and should be stopped.

With that in mind, I have completely finished only one of the three Shadowrun Returns games.

True. So I guess a character having a Hello Kitty item wouldn't be too horribly anti-thematic. It'd be more of a matter if pop culture would survive all those hundreds of years.

Malcom references Rime of the Ancient Mariner in Serenity, the First Laser Pistol is in the episode Trash, so while I'd cast serious doubt that even an advanced cotton/polyester blend would survive wearable after a few centuries, that some crazy great grandmother could have resurrected an image from stories. It's plausible in its anachronism as a rare cultural flotsam, because of its rareness.

Because John Goodman is great in everything he does. He was great even in The Flintstones, even if the movie itself wasn't. I didn't see King Ralph, but I bet Goodman was great in that as well.

      @kitteh

I had this whole thing typed out, read it over, and I came off as really preachy. (I know, it's hard to believe, isn't it?) Instead, here's a short answer:

Hidden number systems push the drama of another sort (I'm told that in the Walking Dead TV series some guy was thought to have The Cure and he was lucking out bluffing the whole time), and I think that FS3 is not meant to be a tabletop/wargame simulator like D&D. It's possible that you want a game system with more openness and therefore have two unfortunate options. 1) Don't play FS3 games. 2) Find a coder who can tweak the--knowing Faraday, probably extremely easy--changes needed to expose the numbers. Like, if anyone's even looked at my stat system they will look at Faraday's and say, "Why can't Theno do things this easily?!"

      Because reasons, that's why.

@surreality said in Emotional separation from fictional content:

I think that if there are reasonable, simple steps we can take to minimize the risks that exist, they are worth exploring.

I'll say this again: What is reasonable to one can be insulting to another.

Saying "this is what I think is reasonable and why" is absolutely part of what we're here in this thread to do. If someone else doesn't think your idea is reasonable they are not necessarily being insulting. If you think someone else's idea is not reasonable and you're not insulting about it then you shouldn't be talked down to.

Clearly "you" in this has become everyone, in every universe, ever, of all time.

It's one of the harder things I've had to learn; how to take someone disagreeing with me because like many people here, I can mistake passion for...a thing that is also passion. Passion is passion.

A lot of my online friends are people who can roll their eyes at even their own passion. Sometimes with a "your mom" reference. I'm looking at you, @COIN.

@HelloProject said in Thought Experiment: Material Design and MUing:

I don't know how many people have read the Material Design documentation (I'm almost done), but I keep thinking: How can this be applied to MUing?

I feel like there's a way, like it's on the tip of my tongue. I think that we should scratch our heads and think of ways, even if it might seem like nonsense, that we could learn from Material Design, even if in some abstract or esoteric way!

We can learn that there is benefit to a well-thought off design document. Notice how almost nothing in it explains why these things are; there is undoubtedly a deeper design document that is used between members of this design team, or the document used to explain to management why this works. Probably during classes for the curious at Google's I/O.

This document is for informing people how to design a consistent experience. You'll notice that the most core of concepts are explained and illustrated before getting to the meat of the matter, and each layer of complexity (movement, color, etc.) does the same thing.

Though all I can think of now is how Google hired a graphic designer who quit out of frustration at the Google engineers arguing over which color of blue to use for a project.

We have been arguing about where "the line" is all thread. Hell, all forum. Hell, since the first WORA.

I agree with you entirely, of course, but I thought the complexity of implementing something this simple needed singling out. How many people here have lost trust in staff, players, or even an entire game because the line you expected turned out to be argued or even outright told was wrong?

A lot of people stop engaging rather than causing trouble for themselves.

      Maxis.

I don't play The Sims, but good on Maxis for opening up almost every gender/bio restriction in the game. I hear that you can't put a teddy on a dude ("no Frank N. Furter" was the phrase I saw), but one thing at a time.

My favorite user comment after the article I got this from:

As a parent with a young child, this type of thing honestly makes me sick ...

... because one day they are going to ask me why people used to care so much if a boy wanted to wear a dress, or why people used to fight about what bathroom to use and I have no idea how I'm going to explain it.
