    • RE: Optional Realities & Project Redshift

      <Crow T. Robot>
      Or, you know, don't.
      </Crow>

      For these I had to click on the links and more or less read whatever was on the other end of the pipe. My Sarcastro offerings:

      http://optionalrealities.com/lowering-barriers-to-entry/

      Quotes the infamous Richard Bartle from a book written back in the Iron Age of MMOs. Also quotes EVE Online as getting you up and running within 2 hours. Up and dead. I can't tell you how many times I died within the first two hours. I don't know what happened after that because I stopped playing. I know this game has a pretty strong following, and I understand why, but "engagement within the first two hours" is hardly what I'd credit to why.

      They do point out that modern computer games have tutorials, and this is something we in the Mush world have dropped entirely. Coding a tutorial is not unlike coding a puzzle, and that's not our focus anymore so we, perhaps lamentably, have forgotten that people need taught. Wikis are starting to pick up the slack, but I think it's just starting.

      Take part in discussion on the merits of player-driven and staff-driven approaches to storytelling!

      Man, who here is tired of the "PrP vs. SrP" threads? Fortunately for forums everywhere, there's no answer here.

      Or get involved with community gaming!

      Unlike ... what ... Mushing/Mudding? If this isn't community gaming, we have seriously lost touch with the concept of "fun".

      That is, I agree that we have seriously lost touch with the concept of "fun".

      What is that first movie, and how did it get a better animation budget than Sonic the Hedgehog?

      I explained this series of Kickstarters to my (board) gaming group. They were slightly horrified, but it was rather neat to see the project continuing on.

      @thenomain what is the difference between a traditional pirate and what ever a nom traditional pirate would be?

      Less rape in the latter.

      @arkandel said in Character 'types':

      On Shang there is an entire faction of slavers though.

      The point is that the game's context matters. Shang's theme is largely "whatever, with sex". People's choice of character in that theme is going to be extremely different than, say, "17th Century Fantasy Swashbuckler".

      [...] when I went on the 1e games and shouted 'Behold! A 1e sphere to add!', people kept going NOPE.

      Because nWoD Mummy is not set up for persistent game play. It's quite possibly more of a story game than Promethean. I personally think it would do the game a disservice.

      I doubt this will still be the case for Mummy2e, since there seems to be a lot more care within Onyx Path to cross-balance the games.

    • RE: Let's talk about TS.

      @tinuviel said in Let's talk about TS.:

      There also needs to be clearly articulated "you can talk to us (staff) if people violate your OOC consent" statements.

      This should be true for everything on the game. Staff is the only group with the organization and authority to provide order.

      And this order has to have bite; if staff and players are not held accountable--or are at least trusted enough to hold themselves accountable, which is the only situation that works--I don't care what you tell people is Okay or Not Okay. People will do whatever they see staff doing or allowing, every single time.

      Game culture comes from the top.

      I know we're talking about Safe TSing, but the sentiment of going to staff in case of problems goes so far past that.

    • RE: Non-WoD

      People always get stuck on Aspects, while Aspects are bar none the single most compelling reason to play Fate.

      My name is Cobalt and I take the aspect Artistic Firebug. I get to re-roll failed attempts that have to do with fire! I get bonus points when I succumb to my love of fire!

      How is this not non-stop awesome? The rules are still written in a way that's not trivial to grasp, but this one, right there, is the key to almost all of them.
