I hope she was the most qualified but if she WAS the most qualified and you DO hire her I do not envy the conversation you'll have to have with whoever that idiot was.

The conversation should have already taken place.

And probably should have started with a more professional version of, "Don't be a dick," and potentially ended with a call to HR.

Do you love me yet, @Thenomain? Do you????????

As the only person really replying to anything at the time, I was trying to let the thread just be a series of un-commented posts since there seemed to be nothing left to talk about, so I kind of blame you for all this. "Blame" in the same way that the one person who says "at least it can't get worse" is to blame for the sudden shit-storm that follows.

It really feels like someone decided that something needed done, without any consideration that things were done. This is often the case when someone sees a log of past events and, to them, they are all hot and new and fiery passion takes over, instead of calm sense.

In a small scenario in my head, Jeshin on some OR staff communications board says, "I am so tired of those Soapbox guys and ..." and the knee-jerk white-hat that we Mu*ers can get in our heads took over. "Let me do this for my friend!" Which is cool and noble and all, but has begun so many feuds that never should have been.

I'm probably wrong, but it's one of the few scenarios where I can understand what the hell just happened.

Why yes, DA2 was crappy. Also I have forgotten what trolling means, possibly because I have been brainwashed by the common misconception that "making fun of" immediately means "trolling".

I agree. I blame the overly sensitive nature started with Political Correctness and Maury Povich. Once again, I blame the 80s.

For current games. And @surreality could design it! And you could code it! And we would have kittens and cake and dancing nudes of all stripes! And I'm sure it would never, ever be out of date.

I think a huge part of my problem with these guys here is that they're taking advantage of this place in a not-good way.

I don't know how they could. The rules of this place are scarce to nonexistent. The worst they have done is be smug and slightly two-faced ("engage us! ... no, in not that way" and "we are about all games! ... no, not those").

It does sound like they're going toward one of the (strongly worded) suggestions I gave earlier in this thread: Either be open and build bridges, or own up to being closed and do whatever you want. Nothing's wrong with either, but trying to be both (c.f., OR's own mission statement on their homepage) is disingenuous.

@Jaunt said in Optional Realities & Project Redshift:

I'm still willing to respond civilly to civil conversation.

According to the 10 or so people I talk to, you are not.

You don't get to decide what is civil all by yourself. This is why it's called "civil".

I have long resisted the idea that 'where' or 'hangouts' code completely hides people who are unfindable. Instead, these should list how many unfindable people are there, so if you're looking for scenes you can still see them.

Perhaps "looking for rp" should also override personal unfindable flags, but not location unfindable flags. I don't find things like "lfg channels" to be at all useful, though, and "lfg" flags not much more. It's cool that people like the idea, but the utility seems pretty niche.

I did refrain from censoring anything they said (I have a thing about censorship) and I did it because of two reasons.

      1. This board appears to have a culture where gloves off discussion has to take place between an understanding can be made.

I think we have gone beyond "gloves-off discussion". I think we have been past this for a few hundred posts. I believe we have been past the "nuh-uh/yuh-huh" stalemate for a while as well. This is barely more than bullshit for the sake of bullshit. One of your cohorts came here specifically to stir things up under the guise of helping. That's not "gloves-off". That's trolling.

In the same vein I decided that allowing my staff to speak openly and freely on a personal level would lead to (hopefully) a progression of the discussion to a new place we could continue on from.

You'll have to ask @crayon specifically, but I think it made it worse, or changed it not one iota. It didn't seem to affect what he said here, which I don't think is a bad thing but I dunno.

Imagine if someone here went to OR and started bitching about your policy as though it was Soapbox. I don't want that person to be me, but at those times where I said I wouldn't post there, this is half of why. I would be the loud dissenter, the nay-sayer, creating antagonism and claim it's free-speech. It's something I can do pretty well. I imagine one of your administrators would think I am a "problem" that would need to be "dealt with", and if I was just being overly cautious before I think now have proof what OR would do with viewpoints they think need "handled".

      1. We have been discussing OR and how it works as a community a lot and since Musoapbox (out of all other communities) has been the greatest contributor to message clarification and introspection.

Awesome. Can your cohorts please stop calling us stupid, then? Kthx.

Bonus 3 - I was dealing with real life stuff and trust both my staff which I think paid off? I feel like the general vibe is improving.

Can you please give us a citation for that? I trust @crayon more because he was willing to talk instead of play forum-games. Well, I'll admit that he's always been willing to talk, but he was willing to say, "Look, posting here is a pain in the ass." There is telling people things and there is explaining your position, and this is an example of going from the former to the latter.

(Sorry to use you as the example, Crayon. I figure Jeshin needs examples that are close to home. Likewise, thank you for willing to be candid.)

Yeah, it kind of is a pain in the ass to post here. It doesn't have to be. A lot of Soapbox is what you expect it to be, the rest of it is what others want it to be. That's a pain in the ass but it's not difficult to change. I just don't see that it has.

I have seen one good use for the unfindable flag: Rooms. People, not just a few people nor just troublemakers, will use the meta information of who's with whom for political gain. I see that you are off grid with the Sherriff, and you said you support me 110% against him, I may have the final bit of evidence that you are lying to me. I can act on this without reproach because who is going to be able to prove that I'm abusing OOC information?

      Answer: Nobody,

This happens even with the unfindable flag, but I've not seen any evidence that the epidemic of this from the 90s has stopped. People are going to be people, and in this case I think it's one of those times.

Arguments of varying degrees of civility usually happen because, in a nutshell, people give a crap and don't agree about something. I mean that's common sense, but it's pretty easy to lose sight of in the heat of things.

My experience in this community wrapped up in two simple sentences.

I miss Brus for things like this. Don't you miss Brus?

One of the phrases I've been hearing more and more, on forums and in the real world, has been "violently agreeing". This is a risk of giving too much of a crap. The other risk of giving too much of a crap is going too far.

Not that I know about any of this.

The mysterious bit is, given that it is not for us, why the fuck is it still here? I can see not removing the thread, but keeping it alive with the links to their new articles is off.

Because "not for you" is a recent conclusion, one that is forming new thoughts on the topics formed here. They're trying to understand the reactions, or are coming to understand them and are still not sure what to do with them. It's ... interesting, watching the process.

I mean, their goals are being interpreted with different connotations, but their purpose is the same as any advertisement: Come experience this, come add to this. The question that I think needs answered is what is meant by "this".

I've heard BESM 3rd is flexible enough to apply to pretty much whatever genre you want. Yes? No? Will 4e be the same?

And can we fast-track it to 5th Edition so that we have at least three game lines that "5E" could refer to?

Warning: Before anyone reads this and gets all "hah, I am right!," or "no, I am right!", I'm still tired of that bullshit from both sides of the aisle. Optional Realities brought the 'us vs. them' mentality here whether they realized it or not. (And I think it's pretty easy to see that they continue, which makes complaints against it ironic.)

This doesn't mean the people of Soapbox's are okay to pull it out of context, but they are people, while OR's representatives can all be considered, as one, "Optional Realities". This may seem unfair to both sides, but I don't really care about fair; I care about what is, and how the world works. Disagree or not, this is now the world works.

As far as I care, OR can post here about their projects all day. That's what we, Soapbox, are here for. This is easy to say because Soapbox is for pretty much everything having to do with this hobby, including the people in the hobby and their unusual drinking habits or non-text-game-playing or Muds or Mushes or Moos or whatever. We may not be for thread-spamming, but so far no harm has been done with it so what the hell.

MOD VOICE: I am not the final authority on any thread spamming going on in this thread, I just don't think it's important enough for me to bring it to the other two.

However, I am again getting tired of authoritarian revisionism, so I decided to do a little of my own research. These are the sites listed on OR's "Partners" page, and their codebase as listed in MudConnect. Where they were not clearly listed, I tried to briefly scan their website or log in to determine. I could not find one, but I'm going to list it as a Mud-type.

      • Sindome: MOO
      • The Evolution of Esos Mud: Diku
      • Shadows of Isildur: Diku
      • LabMUD: FutureMUD
      • The Sea of Storms: Smaug
      • Armageddon: Diku
      • Haven: Mist and Shadow: Custom (I tried logging in to find out more but nngh, no)
      • No Return: Penn
      • OtherSpace: Penn
      • Project Redshift: Not listed, presumed Mud.

      Final Count. Mush-types: 2. Mud-types: 7. Moo/Muck-types: 1.

I will continue to do other fact-checking as time permits, and encourage others to report similar findings here. Facts probably should be backed up with evidence, but what the game of he-said-she-said back-and-forth going on here is also fun to read. I guess it depends on whether your goal is speaking truth to power, or enjoying yourself watching people trip over themselves.

We’re talking about the prime Pillow Fort instigator and at the time all around shitty person to our hobby, yes. Her ability to get people to like her until she decides they’re not worth it anymore is a defining trait, and I’d be looking forward to the moment where her current support network figures this out.

It’s good to be self-aware, @AeriaNyx , and I you can probably be pretty confident that you now have more of it than she does.

      @rdc

      My write-in vote: No Beast.

I gave up coding the Best system because it's one part incomplete and one part the powers depend entirely on what other supers are part of your group. I trust you can code or find someone to code this aspect, but I gave up on it pretty quickly.

I personally don't like the "powers come from other supers" aspect that just makes me think Kumbaya/Super-Friends. The game system also doesn't feel polished. Promethean and Mummy, tho staged as stand-alone games, feel like complete games. Beast felt like it was written without playtesting or focus.

Tho as @Ganymede says, you're good for game development, so you're on the short list of people who'd make Beast work. It'd be an interesting experiment.
