      @bored

      I didn't see your response as sarcastic. It's a good point. We can no more be trusted with anarchy than we can with self-moderation under a heavy rules regime. We don't disagree on that point.

      I wanted to offer some warning that "have rules" alone is not a solution. It needs to be tempered with leadership or earned trust (what some incorrectly call "favoritism"; thank you for reminding me of that, @VulgarKitten).

      @bored

      I see a future where people expected to self-moderate will use the rules as a way to feel validated in harshing on others.

      I see this future because we've lived it.

      On pretty much every game I've ever seen.

      I like the intent, but it starts with people acting kinder to others than they have, or monitored by people with a more even keel (e.g. admins), in which case we won't need the precision rule-parade.

      What I always disliked about the downvote is its anonymity. It's why I was fired from administrating here; I told everybody that I would out any downvote list and carried through on that promise for myself which was (quasi-understandably) considered an abuse of power. (It was more complicated than this, but it's how strongly I feel about this.)

      Seeing who is dog-piling on whom in this community is important. I strongly believe that negative statements need qualified, and when anonymous negativity is allowed, you end up with...well, The Internet.

      Because you were kind of a dick to people for liking TinyMUX.

      Only MUX 1.x and TinyMUSH.

      I got annoyed of people always whining about it eating their databases 😉

      What is a niche hobby without shoddy equipment? Where is the excitement if everything works smoothly? Next you’re going to say that clear documentation is good or something.

      Pillars of Eternity: Deadfire

      What does it say that I absolutely loved Baldur's Gate and Planescape: Torment back in the day, but Pillars of Eternity, Numenera: Torment, and even Tyranny mainly bored me. Not Shadowrun tho, oh no, there's a series that got better through three entire games.

      I'll catch it on a steam sale because I want to support Black Is--errrrr, Obsidian, but eh.

      Why would someone who you have never met, have likely never seen, know nothing about, likely has no knowledge of you as well, nor likely has a reason to even find out, have any bearing to state that you would be worthless or not.

      Because you were kind of a dick to people for liking TinyMUX.

      And an even better question. Why should you care?

      You didn't, and we both matured as people.

      --

      It's pretty notable that both Ashen and I have changed enough that we can kid one another about the days when he shit-talked things, I tried to drag him down into the filth, and he largely ignored it as if he was making the world a better place for being harsh. We were both wrong. I was probably more wrong but screw it, I was going to be strong-willed and unapologetic about it.

      People will be dicks. The important part is the endless cycle of change and trying to make it for the better. It gets easier as you mature because you start to realize just how stupid it is to care this hard. Maturity can hit anyone at any age.

      A note especially to @Arkandel, but for all three admins: It seemed to work decently when you said in a thread a simple “Guys, enough.”

      I think that Auspice’s responses are too jokey and Ganymede’s too trying-to-be-factual. (edit: this makes Auspice the new Thenomain and Ganymede the new Emmahsue. Go figure.)

      “Enough” is the warning. “No, really, stop it” is the final warning, then...well, everyone will have their opinion on what comes next, but this is how I think you could very easily make it work without working more than you do now.

      I’m that second raccoon, grudgingly there because I think there’s food. Later I will probably complain to the person holding the bubble gun and be mocked in public for it.

      Still, I love this hobby and I’m always glad when people find things to love about it.

      "I don't like this thing you built and I think you're dumb for having built it and ZOMG can't you even see how dumb this is what's the matter with you?"

      But we're not very good at either offering nor seeing creative criticism, either. "I don't like this thing because x, y and z" is not the same as "I don't like this thing because x, y and z are stupid", but this is how we often say and/or see it, even when it's not meant. It's ironic how communications is not our strong suit.

      It certainly doesn't help when people interject with comments designed to push the conversation toward the absurd (looking in the mirror too, here) which can disrupt already tenuous attempts at what is tantamount to diplomacy. Maybe if we weren't so sensitive about our darlings or so used to people being dickwads at us we wouldn't be so sensitive or paranoid, but it's a reality that needs worked on.

      Without people pretending like Heath Ledger's Joker had a point. That shit just be cray.

      Man, I take it all back. How you present yourself doesn't matter anymore; it's only if someone objects to it that turns a discussion into shit-talk.

      No. This may be a misinterpretation of what @faraday said, but I maintain the validity of the point. You're welcome to believe we've all come a long way from those days and could totally sustain ourselves without the mud-slinging. History begs to differ with you, whether or not you agree that the history in question is pertinent.

      You used my 'citation needed', so if you weren't talking about what I was saying then you're being very confusing about it. Also I never said we've come a long way. I even said that I fall prey to shit-talk too. I also don't see myself questioning history, but saying that we can and have overcome it, which means we can again.

      I'm not sure what you're trying to say, but I'm seriously not getting it.
