    • RE: Heroic Sacrifice

Two popular RPGs that reward failure:

      Fate Core.

      Apocalypse World.

I think @faraday absolutely nailed it with the fact that we take our characters as avatars, with the whole "takes too long to join the action" discussion.

Above are listed two RPGs that frame characters as story participants, as distinctly separate from the player, and where creating characters and getting in the action are key parts of their very chargen.

      Starting there would be good.

What settings do you beg to see but just don't?

      Fallout.

I mean, some of these settings would not make a good Mu*.

What types of games do you enjoy that aren't being catered to as well, or as much, as you'd like?

      Chronicles of Darkness.

I can feel the collective eye-rolling from here (and it fuels my ennui), but you asked as well as I'd like. I've seen Bland By Night so many times that I kind of don't want to see anyone try it again.

But if you do, lets talk about code.

Also: Possibly a superhero game where I don't have to be an expert on the genre to play or enjoy.

What favorite settings do you have that you would adore playing in and being a part of, that simply don't exist anymore, or if they do, need a new breath of life pumped into their lungs?

Nothing springs to mind for me here. "See Above" would be one answer, but I think that even more talk about WoD/CoD is not useful, so I won't.

      My summary:

Theno: Ugh Zak Smith fuck no.
      Bobotron: Not involved.
Theno: Oh hey Kenneth Hite yay!

Wait, Mark Rein•Hagen is involved? Did they find him couch-surfing in California? Man, this article brings back the 90s.

      (shudder)

      @ganymede

White Wolf wants to go back to its roots: A group of stoners led by a charismatic douche that touched on the nerve of a generation that felt underrepresented.

I’m not calling Hite a stoner, but on the same token the current underrepresented generation is rebelling against violence and eating Tide pods, so I’m not sure how they think this is going to work.

It goes without saying that anyone who spoils Infinity War here... let's just say we'll unleash @Ganymede completely on them.

Tony Stark was dead the whole time.

Bruce Banner has sex with the woman even after he finds out she’s a man.

Natalia Romanova was Star Lord’s dad.

Groot was the name of the sled.

It is frankly impossible to put that many characters in one movie and make it interesting; the various Batman movies keep proving this.

      Which writer is this?

Zak Smith. He was openly laughing, in a writing sense, people who were criticizing the pre-alpha’s implication that one of the characters practiced predatory practices against minors. As usual the ol’ chestnut “It’s the World of Darkness” was trotted out. The blog post on the White Wolf website about it is far more measured, “we did this on purpose but our fault was not explaining why”, but Zak’s responses on social medium were very, well, WORA.

However, I respect every ounce of Kenneth Hite and am glad to see him as lead writer, so I’m willing to give it a shot, but I suspect that my goth days are completely purged from my persona and so my desire for edginess. This wouldn’t normally be enough to turn me away completely. That would be Zak’s tone-deaf masturbation.

@bobotron Now we just gotta get @Thenomain into cooking this shit up into a codebase.

I am hesitant to do so. The SJW in me isn’t sure it wants to support Pornjerk McLaughing-At-Others. I will contently take a look at any drafts or glance at any rulesets people have on hand, but no promises.

I almost wanted to ask if Frankenstein was American Gothic and Dracula was British Gothic, but I didn’t want to appear stupid.

It was closer to correct than I thought. Thanks!

I really enjoy Lindsay Ellis's pop culture stuff.

I am also incredibly glad that I watched her breakdown of Bright which was a mix of writing theory and history of the film itself.

Man, I'm not sure I wanna see her tear apart Bright. 😐

It’s fine to have guilty pleasures, as @coin says, or don’t watch it that’s fine. After watching her Hobbit breakdown I was legitimately kind of depressed, and not just because of the obvious sad-panda editing and framing she does at the very end.

I really enjoy Lindsay Ellis's pop culture stuff.

I just finished watching her The Hobbit duality trilogy and I thought she was a good, solid writer to begin with, but by the end I was agreeing with the core thesis of the hour and a half documentary that she made: Once you know, you can't go back.

I'm learning far more about writing from her videos than I have in podcasts about writing because she is writing about concrete examples, and her style, tone, and structure make it almost entirely approachable to a layman like myself. (Some is a bit advanced film theory, but eh, I can learn through repeated exposure.)

I am also incredibly glad that I watched her breakdown of Bright which was a mix of writing theory and history of the film itself.

      @auspice

Sometimes I will publicly praise my friends but privately admonish them. Others I will praise and admonish publicly. For me the distinction depends upon our relationship.

For instance one of the things I love about the marraige of @emmahsue and @helloraptor is how they are comfortable enough in their lives that they will say the other has messed up, or is wrong, and it’s never in anger. When they praise each other it’s never looking cliquish or suckuppery. They say these things because they believe it, and think it needs said. Thoughtful and respectful. Who doesn’t want this kind of relationship?

But not everyone is this way, and not all mistakes or wrongdoing is created equal. Not all rightdoing is created equal either, but if there is no harm in the praise then we could use more of it.

@auspice I am still of the opinion that the Advertisement thread should be an initial post by the author and then locked, so the initial poster can edit it but no discussion about it. Put the discussion in other topics.

Would be super awesome nice if there was an automatic thread creation somewhere for that conversation.

At the time, yes. I finished it to see what happened but mostly out of a sense of obligation, unlike Shadowrun Returns (all three) where I didn't finish because the endgame kicked my ass and I promise myself that I will get back to it sometime and finish these storylines.

This is why I pre-ordered Battletech and not whatever else Obsidian is coming out with next.

I actually quite liked the premise of Tyranny, especially the bit where I gave the pair of my middle fingers to the Dark Lord and did things however I wanted, for which someone should've absolutely murdered my character before the end. It wasn't a great story, but I deeply appreciated the focus to letting me the player break out of the mold the world was putting me in. There's not enough of that in games these days; I'm looking at you, Fallout 4.
