Good or New Movies Review

Having seen a lot of the work Max Landis has done, I have not found his dialogue to ever be really bad. Even his novice efforts in Chronicle were not bad and if you have not seen Mr. Right - well I enjoyed the shit out of that movie. Although that might be because I also like Sam Rockwell.

Infinity Room is on Netflix and scratched so many itches in my mind that I literally shut the tv off, and went straight to bed, content with the world. Which for those who know me, is actually a pretty amazing feat.

No spoilers.

I don't know if anyone would call it 'good,' but I'm watching Kong Skull Island right now and enjoying the hell out of it. Once you get past the mysterious extra 10 helicopters, it's a really fun, really stupid movie.

@sg I loved Sammy J. in that one. And I pretty much love all things John Goodman. But yes. GREAT movie to watch when you want something mindless. Also, credits endscenes tugged the heartstrings.

If you have a chance to see The Shape of Water, it is well worth your hard-earned money. It's an absolutely beautiful film.

@Cupcake Yes! I second this! My husband and I saw this today and it was really lovely. I'm excited because on Friday, Guillermo del Toro is giving a talk at a theater here about the creative process and production of the movie. I'm going to be sitting in the front row with big, glittery stars in my eyes.

Anyone who lives in LA, this is going down at the Arclight Hollywood.

I am, and the phrase that comes to mind is cautiously optimistic.

On one hand, it appears that it's going to expand on the mythology of the series in far better ways than some of the othet films did, but yanno...at the end of the day...it's a direct to video release in an era of moviemaking with a barely existent direct to video market.

So it was good enough to make, but not good enough for even a limited theatrical release?

A Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia (OMFG that movie title) got a nationwide theatrical release.

This is true. I was wondering at the direct-to-video. It even has decent names attached to it. It doesn't look terrible. I'll give it a shot, viewing-wise.

I am suspicious. There is no mention of Doug Bradley in the mini-credits at the end. Heather Langenkamp, oddly, but no Doug Bradley.

He's not in it because the director had an insane NDA and he was having none of it. But he has nothing, personally, against the guy who was cast for it and seems to think highly of him.

I have very little hope for the new Hellraiser for the simple fact that it was made purely so Dimension doesn't lose rights to the franchise. We shall see though. I'm one of the few people who didn't despise Hellraiser: Revelations so as long as the movies tries a little I'm sure I'll find some enjoyment in it.

Also, bear in mind, Heather Langenkamp is a name from Nightmare on Elm Street. Ashley Laurence is not reprising the role of Kirsty. IIRC the last one she was in (despite me having a soft spot for it) was apparently a mess and it helped her redo her kitchen.

I'm okay without Doug Bradley as the Hellpriest. I believe there are other people who could have made that role amazing. For example, could you imagine if Bill Nighy had chosen to play Pinhead instead of Viktor in Underworld? I think we would have shit ourselves with how well Nighy might have handled that.

Or even take an idea from the comics and have Doug Bradley escape Hell as Spencer and Ashley Laurence take his place as the Kirsty Hellpriest.

There's a LOT Hellraiser can do, but even now Clive Barker isn't writing this content like he used to. The Scarlet Gospels was disappointing, IMO, and the idea of a Harry D'Amour (Lord of Illusions Bakula character) and Hellpriest showdown was pure fucking gold...but Barker 2017 isn't Barker 1992. It felt off, with a weird Scooby Squad element and another magical negro trope.

Another thing to consider... if they'd let the IP go and a big name studio picked it up... Doug Bradley is not a young man anymore. The likelihood of another studio simply replacing him would have been extremely high.

(Probably by doing a 'reboot' of the series, at that.)

I honestly doubt we'll see another with Clive Barker fully on board, etc... even if Dimension ever lets it go.

@auspice I would agree except... playing Pinhead does not require a younger man. Pinhead isn't an active villain like Freddy, or even Jason. He largely lets the ephemeral do its thing before he makes a stately appearance. His is much more the gravitas of horror than anything. DB can easily still move about in a stately manner, speaking in his usual grave tones (he still does it at conventions!). Admittedly, this sort of thing is also why I avoided the Nightmare on Elm Street remake. I love the actor that replaced Robert Englund. But I grew up with Freddy. Literally. Nobody could ever replace Englund for me. Also why I love Kane Hodder as Jason, despite his not being the 'original' Jason. He was the longest lasting and, to me, the one that created so many of Jason's iconic moments.
