Tablet keyboard

jesus fucking christ I am making a thread for this because I actually want to see keyboard suggestions
-
@Tinuviel Characterize it however you want. It's the second time this wank has gone on in a week or so. I mentioned it then, too, so where's your 'if I tell someone something isn't cool and they do it again' approach now?
Some people make rape jokes thinking they're just being funny, too. "I was just being funny!" is not a universal defense.
It's especially uncalled for when I was replying specifically to Auspice, who has the same inquiry regarding Apple compatible products.
-
Look, an iPad can use an Apple keyboard or a bluetooth one.
I don't care.
I just want it to be
a) affordable
b) reliant
c) portableThe last one I bought was A and C, but not B.
ETA) Shit all you want on me in the other thread for HAVING an iPad, but it was a gift and hey, free things are awesome.

I'll just say this. I've been working IT for more than 20 years now, and been in it as a hobby for 30. I've done both Windows and Apple service (More recently having to upgrade to service iOS and Android devices as well), to the point that I worked for a shop certified to handle Apple hardware repairs <They were few and far between before the advent of the Apple store model; Apple's response to most any issue was 'send it back to them'>. In my current position I've had to deal with just about all the major players in the field on the corporate side of things. That said, knowing what I know and seeing how things work on that level - I will never pay for an Apple product. Ever. I even gave back the one that work made me carry.
That aside, though, what model of tablet are we talking about here? We use a few Android ones from various manufacturers, and usually people seem pretty happy with the Zagg cases/keyboard peripherals; but I don't know if they make them for 10" devices.

....conversation about tablet keyboards ever -
@Auspice I tried.
I think the one spot the magic fails is that it doesn't fit into a case fitted to the tablet. It's not huge, about a inch and a half longer. Flat enough to tuck into things nicely.
Mine last about a year or two, but I abuse the crap out of them as the 'all the things forever' keyboard in heavy daily use. This one was $99 when we got it two years back.
-
@Killer-Klown My tablet is an old Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 inch. I quite like it, but typing on touch screens... eh, not fun. Plus the touch keyboard hides half the screen!
-
Will cheerfully join in the touchscreen keyboard hate. That a system-independent horror.
-
@Arkandel I think Zagg used to make one for those, but it might be discontinued. The peripheral market has been so saturated over the last few years that no product stays in production for too long.
See if this one does anything for you, though; I haven't used it myself but it's modular enough to adjust for different sizes (Even if the idea of having a touchpad with a touchscreen seems kind of ... redundant)

To be fair some of the hate on Apple is due to the way Apple presents themselves and isolates themselves from the main stream. A prime example of this is that Apple has gone out of its way to make sure that gaming on a Mac is a less than full-filling endeavor. This is not to say that I have a hate for Apple or anything, just that they've done enough marketing to encourage this OS war stupidity.
I disagree!
Not that Apple doesn’t isolate itself from the mainstream, but that isolating oneself from the competition encourages anything. People will always have problems with the Other. As an Apple user, I have gotten used to things like Derp’s nonsense, that the idea that someone is borrowing ideas that work as a bad thing.
This was funny at the time, but in retrospect this was at the height of the OS Wars Part 2 (part one involved OS/2) and it is embarrassing to look at in retrospect. It’s very Steve Jobs, but since the iPhone first came out, Apple has barely mentioned any other system but Android, and Apple has shareholders to please and marketing to do, and it’s very rare that Apple insults Android as an OS. Mostly it’s about security and privacy and, hey, I want my companies fighting over security and privacy.
So, no, Apple is proud and headstrong, but they aren’t encouraging anyone anymore, and haven’t for a decade. Most people who seriously think this are insecure to the point of needing a hug and ice cream.
Mmm, rum raisin.

To be completely fair...
I would buy more Apple products, especially their laptops, if they were:
- Compatible with gaming
But more importantly...
- Their more expensive products (ex: laptops) weren't built so heavily on a product plan that is basically: "You cant upgrade that machine but you can replace it for $3000+!"
The OS, technology, security, performance, and everything about Apple is fucking solid. They dont make stupid decisions that make Windows leak security like a sieve. Unfortunately, I can buy a gaming PC/laptop for less than 1500, a "check mail and Mu" PC/laptop for less than 600, and since I don't so a lot of video/sound editing from an investment perspective Apple simply doesn't make sense. Most Windows machines all fit into a "timeframe of technology" that allows for upgrading as upgrades arrive until the firmware requires more drastic changes (new kind of ram, new technology not designed for the motherboard or new motherboards not compatible with the casing).

So I asked my son what keyboard he bought for his tablet and he uses this one it survived a 16 year old. So... YMMV
Edit: He earned the money so he could pay for it. So, yeah. I'd have never bought it for him.
I also have this one (via work) and it is fantastic, if pricey. Never had an issue with it. It mostly lives in my drawer tho.

To get us back on track (kinda) is there any reason a tablet setup with a physical keyboard wouldn't be a good/great way to MUSH?
And I might be daydreaming here but there wouldn't be any Android clients supporting spawns, would there?

"I don't like it" is a perfectly good reason. Like almost everything to do with MUing... it's fine. It doesn't need a consensus, or a quorum, or any sort of understanding. If you can keep pace with everyone else without constantly suffering from auto-correct typos, use whatever system you want.

Without a peripheral keyboard your wpm would be affected, not to mention having to type and move the screen at the same time

So I haven't yet been able to get an Android client to work well. Mukluk did best last I tried, but as others have said: Mudrammer on iOS seems to do best for MU.
If you're a developer? The mobile space is somewhere that needs help for MUing.
-
@Auspice The dev for MUDRammer has poked their head in here from time to time. It is not a flawless app, but it has worked great for me whenever I travel, and the dev is around and listening, which is a pretty huge thing.

Yeah, but rape jokes are never funny, but jokes about people being goofballs and spending a lot of money on silly things are always funny.

Yes. Also vim is better than emacs and people who use the latter are weak minded.
