And there is not enough nurses to care for all the patient's there is right now. I just got home after my government provided replacement didn't show up and we had to scramble. A manager took over so I could get a few hours of sleep before tomorrow. At a certain point is just not enough nurses to care for everyone. I am working insane hours. So every person who stays home is lowering the burden on the medical system, which is about to break right now or at least it feels that way.
I would say a lot more about the situation right now, but I just don't have the words right now and I think I would get emotional and too intense real quick.
I hope your friend improves, Ghost and I am sorry to hear about her situation.
A lot of my city's nurses got sent to another city in the state where there was a worse outbreak and now it's worsening here so they've raised us to a level 4 and are begging people to not travel (since, surprise surprise, the state gov is once again blocking lockdown attempts) because we don't have enough nurses for the increase in patients.
And yet, this many months in, I have still seen posts on Twitter like 'Do you actually know anyone who has had covid?'
Like I'm sorry if you don't know anyone who has either a) you're lying, or b) THE ISOLATION IS WORKING YOU DONUT
-
yeah states are basically fighting over nurses right now. Speaking of which will go and get my couple of hours of sleep before its back to the battle!
-
It's getting so bad that I'm not just worried about caregivers, I'm worried about the people who operate the hotline for caregivers who are in crisis.

My sister is a nurse assigned to the Covid unit. Every day is terrifying for me, because she is one of the best people in my life, and the world would be a very poor place indeed, if we lost that light.
Of course, her working in that unit, means I don't get to see her. Because I'm 'vulnerable', and all that shit. And it sucks. Because I just want to hang out with her, and have her tell me all the whacked out shit she sees every day. Just to hang out and let her unwind, and tell me everything. I miss her, and worry, and thinking about it just makes me ramble.
Sorry.
-
@Macha You have nothing to apologize for. Thank you for sharing with us. Your sister sounds pretty great. I hope she stays healthy. She should, as long as she sticks to infection control protocols, which it sounds like she will.

@GreenFlashlight I have 2 sisters. They're both good people, who want to do good in the world. (Spec. ed. teacher and the nurse).
The teacher sister? She's lovely, and I love her and all. But my nurse sister just brings this light inside me, when I get to see her/talk to her.
I feel bad that I have one sister I love more than the other, but it's all personality types.

Not really a sad. More of a 'What a shame.' This was a top story on BBC News front page.
Most people in the western world probably think of Ethiopia as some third world shithole (to quote our dear President) with no significance whatsoever.
When I worked in a coin store, I had gold and silver coins from Ethiopia from almost two thousand years ago. The Kingdom of Aksum/Axum was a large, powerful, wealthy Empire that built castles and obelisks and had extensive trade.
It is said that the Queen of Sheba came from Aksum, romanced King Solomon and gave birth to a son of his which is the beginning of the Jews in Ethiopia. Haile Selassie supposedly traced his lineage back to Solomon and Sheba.
It's not just a shame to see the once great country in such dire straits but that it's been forgotten even though it existed alongside Egypt and Rome. It's worth reading about.

Even better: there are actually more pyramids in Nubia than in Egypt. However there are a lot more people with dark skin there than in Egypt so it was thought for a long, long, long time by archaeologists (George Reisner was the wooorst) that they couldn't possibly have had a real society there and anything of value that was there was stolen from Egypt.
Africa, as a whole, really gets shit on due to racism in all kinds of ways. That's also why we know more about Neanderthals than we do about Early Man because Neanderthals were in Europe. Where white people are. And Early Man is not.
Good times!

Ethiopia is still going through the throes of civil war. Eritrea breaking away was just the start of it. Its current Prime Minister is doing what he can, but political ambitions create the worst tragedies.

So fun fact. I'm seeing my doctor today because I might be going deaf from something called an 'ear stroke'.
Told while its not life threatening, I can go completely deaf from it and the first two weeks from the onset of symptoms is the 'golden time' to possibly prevent that reality.
I am unnerved currently.
-
@Testament I can't even imagine. Please focus on your health right now.
-
@GreenFlashlight I actually just got back from seeing my GP. Apparantly she's unsure, but doesn't think it's vascular related.
So I'm being referred to both an ENT and Audiologist.
Fun times.
-
@Testament Hoping for the best for you!
-
@Testament My thoughts are with you right now. Big hugs.

The good news; the issue with my ear may not be as dire as once thought and I may just need a nasal steroid spray.
The worse news; my old man cat had a stroke last night. It came from out of nowhere as he had been acting normally, though perhaps a bit more lethargic than usual. We got him to the vet ER within ten minutes and we sat in our car for the next three hours.
The vet was optimistic, his blood work came back good, the anti seizure medication he had responded well to, and she told us to head home and she would keep him overnight for observation.
We got a call at 3;30 in the morning. He had more seizures, and had to be incubated. We got back fast that I was able to see him.
It was terrible. He didn't blink, his eyes didn't move, and there didn't seem to be anyone there. I told the vet to end his pain. It was all I could do.
Everything is still raw.. I keep thinking ill find buried under a blanket even though I buried him in my mom's farm at 6am this morning.
I had my buddy for over 16 glorious years. From a stray cat to the most lovable, friendliest cat who never hissed or growled a day in life.
I didnt cry this much when my ex fiance broke up with me. But I've been a mess literally all day.
I just wanted to rant at the sky for taking something so good out of this world.
Countless moves and a handful of breakups, messy or otherwise, but the one constant was the my old man. He was a rock. And I will miss him so much.
Fuck 2020

@Testament Having recently had to make the same decision with my best friend for 14 years, I feel your pain. I'm so sorry.
-
I'm sorry to hear it. He was, indeed, a good cat.
-
Go hug your pet. That is all.
-
I am truly sorry to hear of your loss.

My grandfather had a stroke yesterday. He's in the hospital. Supposedly he's doing OK. But I know his health has been really poor of late in general.
He is 90.
These things happen.
But I still hate how circumstances have meant I've only seen him once in the past five years.
