Improving MSB

But you'll still never have more posts than @Arkandel or @Coin.
Posts don't equate to popularity. Of those with more posts, I'm still measurably more popular.
As a metric, I measured popularity by one's reputation from one's posts; as a ratio, that would be reputation / posts. Using that, I found the following:
@Arkandel: 1478/2499 = 0.59
@Coin: 1526/2223 = 0.69
@Thenomain: 1138/1964 = 0.58
Me: 863/1233 = 0.70As far as I can tell, though, no one can beat @surreality. That bitch is popular.

@Ganymede It's the TS. Gotta be.

Ha.
Also: Jesus, @Surreality, how do you DO it?!
On a more serious note, I think if you're gonna have upvotes you might as well have downvotes. I'd love if you could see who did the downvotes, though. Not so much because I need to know who hates me, but so the people I downvote can know I was the one who did it.
-
@lordbelh I honestly dunno. I got chatty as fuck recently which changed it up some, too, so if being mentioned or tagged adds to it -- that might be a lot of why.
-
Imma gonna call that the "Ganymede Popularity Measure," or "GPM." It shall henceforth be my way of determining who I should give a fuck about.
-
@lordbelh Before we discuss how downvoting works (... @Glitch's teeth are grinding hard by now) we should know what it means.
On a site like Slashdot it actually affects the visibility of your posts. If enough people 'downvote' - it's not exactly the same thing there - a post then it can become invisible and if enough 'upvote' it then it shows up higher. But that's on a site with thousands of visitors per day, we quite likely don't need anything like that.
If it's just popularity do we even need it? Is that a thing we want to care about? It occurs to me the people most direly in need of downvoting won't give a damn (I didn't notice Sovereign caring, as long as we were paying attention to him) and the ones receiving the upvotes usually don't give half a damn. We already function on a highschool level as a community as it is, do we need more ways to know who the cool kids are and are not?
So what's the point? What should it do?

I don't use it as a popularity tool. I'll upvote posts I think have a point, and I'll downvote posts I think are seriously stupid. The former happens a lot more often than the latter, mind you. I think it offers a useful insight into how people are responding to the discussions; not everybody will actually make a written reply, and not every post is even worthy of a written reply.
No doubt some people just downvote/plus vote based on who is making a post, but I don't think that is even close to universal.

We could have flashes from the past and post random flamewars from rec.games.frp.dnd. Every time I see Improving MSB, I think of one of the trolls of that board, Michael Scott Brown and the petty petty arguments he'd get into when DnD 3.5 came out.
I often wonder if he and Mr. Bane are the same person.
-
On real sites with vote systems, they are used to bring useful points to the surface and obliterate trolls and otherwise distracting or off topic posts into obscurity.
Our group is small enough that this doesn't seem possible. I would rather simply have a thumbs-up and nothing else.
-
Woooohoooo! 476/450 baby!
-
Gah I am not popular. I should just /wrist...

I noticed that a poster was so sensitive to the down vote that it was apparently effective to anonymously down vote a series of obsessive "medieval negro" posts without having to engage in the conversation at all.

You totally went back and deleted all the posts you were downvoted/received no votes on! False advertising!

There lies my beef with the current down vote. I'm all for down voting, but it shouldn't be hidden when you do.
-
I'd even just prefer to see exactly how many downvotes there are-- right now if you have a mix of upvotes and downvotes, you can't be positive what the exact numbers are (unless you wanna sit down and do the math SHUT UP).
-
@Cobaltasaurus
I'm good with this AND with making downvotes not anonymous. Nobody should be ashamed to downvote to begin with... I mean... it's us.

Is there a max # options for polls?
-
We are using
nodebb-plugin-poll
so it should go like this:[poll title="this is a poll"] - choice 1 - choice 2 [/poll]
However, when I try it:
[poll title="this is a poll"]
- choice 1
- choice 2
[/poll]
Go figure.
-
@Thenomain yeah I am trying to open a poll but it's failing.
