@thebird Trust your gut on that one. It's not being insensitive. What/how your MIL reacted isn't safe at all (most people getting treated for anxiety aren't going to do that nor would it even occur to them to). I would never ever leave my kids with someone of that level of hatred directed at me in that unhinged away, not to be punitive but because no child should have to endure that kind of impulsive rage.

@hedgehog Having done PTA and magnet program type thing president/board for like 10 years at this point -- there weren't any complaints about you. I'd be willing to bet $100 on it. That is the pta/church lady way of expressing jealousy and being mean, and to get you off of their turf in a way that doesn't look bad to outsiders. I don't blame you for not wanting to work with this bitch anymore, but I hope it doesn't put you off on volunteering in general. but yuck. I hate that feeling.

Clickbait, 100% of them. Commonly attacking the most successful movies and shows based on wild speculation and sensationalist articles without any substance - "will Rogue One be a massive failure for Disney? It seems to be wasting its cast!". What? It's not even close to being out, all we have is a freakin' trailer! "It might be trying too hard to stay in the timeline of existing movies so it can't have its own identity".

Or while Game of Thrones is drawing near-record ratings I've seen no less than three Yahoo! first page articles attacking it ("has it become really predictable? Is this the beginning of the end? They are running out of villains.") The real villains of the show have barely been seen and its big-time players are still ascending, what the...

Honestly it varies wildly from job to job and company to company. I work for a big storage company, international, but our culture is very relaxed. Everyone wears jeans, everyone goes by their first name.

Sometimes I call be-nametagged people by their names. Is it creepy? I'm just trying to treat them like people! No one's ever called me creepy for it, but I have attractive woman privilege.

Honestly creepy might be a slight overstatement. When I had a nametag job I did not like it but I felt it was more overly familiar then creepy.
I think the disconnect likely comes from the different positions, as a customer you interact with maybe a dozen or so cashiers etc, during a day of shopping. As the employee I would interact with around a hundred customers during the shift.

I waltzed in for my shift this afternoon with a new razor-cut/clipped/cropped mess of hair dyed a kind of glorious coppery cherry color. My dad-friend (the only male to regularly volunteer, might I add) turned to me and said 'I see you're here to scare all the kids!' right in front of her and her cronies. It was life-affirming.

She's gone next year, off to Queen Bee the volunteering at the middle school. I shan't miss her.

I wasn't clear. By 'employees' I mean employees of whatever business I happen to be in. Bank tellers for instance. Pharmacists. Yes, you know my first name because it's on your computer screen. That doesn't mean we're on a first name basis.

When I worked at Radioshack as an employee and a manager, I thought it was really awkward when a customer would call me my name out of the blue. Sometimes I suspect they did it because it caused a pause in the conversation - especially if I was answering their questions about a product - and wanted to stop the close.

But I think the most discomforting thing would be the regulars who'd come in and walk up and go 'Hey x, blah blah blah blah," like we are the best of buddies and them using my first name makes me want to help them with more enthusiasm than - you are my customer, here's your shit, now get out. With a smile.

On the other hand I do a lot of phone work now and I don't mind my name being used so much because I will use someone's name to the point of uncomfortability, interjecting it at every opportunity. Because I can.

How hard is it to be polite to someone without using their name?

I've honestly never felt the urge to call an employee at a store by their name on their tag. If anything, I think I'd feel awkward doing it. I just try to say 'Please' and 'Thank you' and not be a dick about what I'm looking for.

Actually, strangers calling me by my name, especially my first name, are the opposite of polite to me. I find that off-putting and tend to get brusquer with them.

I work as a cashier, service desk associate, -and- CSM at Wal-Mart. I wear a nametag every day. All my workers and supervisors, right up to the Store Manager, have to wear nametags. To this day, unless they tell me otherwise, I call them 'Miss/Mrs./Mr. <name>'. Because its polite. No matter who I'm dealing with. If I don't have a name, sir or ma'am/miss. People will call ME by name, but I would much rather have someone do that than tell me one more time 'oh if it doesn't ring up its free, haha' or 'wow, you must be a general with all those buttons'. Because I don't hear that ALL THE TIME.

Also, people who pile up EVERYTHING at the very far end of the belt despite there being yards of open space between you and the person in front of you? FUCK YOU. You're being a douche.

Same goes to the asshole answering a phone call when I'm trying to ask you a question/take payment from you/HELPING YOU FIX YOUR FUCKING PROBLEM THAT WAS YOUR FAULT IN THE FIRST PLACE.

Oh, and if you ask me where the bathrooms are, and we're standing FIVE FEET FROM THE CLEARLY MARKED BATHROOMS, you have lost all right to get huffy when I simply point to said clearly marked door. At that point, I am not speaking because if I do, the snark will not be held back.

Bonus points if you come directly to the service desk in an attempt to pick up your online order, completely missing the GIANT BIOHAZARD ORANGE paint with the five foot tall 'PICK UP HERE' sign on it.

Oh, and if you come into the CLEARLY not a superstore and get pissed that we're not, in fact, a superstore and thus do not have a full grocery section? Eat a bag of dicktits.

If I had to wear a name tag at a workplace so people would be encouraged to use my first name, I would actually go through the legal hassles of getting my name changed to something REALLY FUCKING OFFENSIVE (like DickyMcDickFace, all one word) just so that nobody would use it.
