Does it feel weird when they change who plays Spider Man in the movies, or turning Thor into a woman?

And for Thor: Yes, to me at least. Thor is a specific guy! It's not his superhero alias, it's his actual name. 🙂 Like, literally his mom was bitching at 'Thor' to go wash his hands before dinner when he was a kid. </rant>

There are a bunch of people in the world named "Angel". Is it weird for an X-Man to have the name Angel as their alias?

Angel was named after something else, other people called the same weren't named after him.

(We're derailing the thread so I'll stop it here 🙂 )

(Psst. I know a dude whose name is Jesus that might have a thing to say...)

I believe FS3 is FUDGE, not FATE. Correct me if I'm wrong, @faraday.

FS3 is neither. It's a custom system. Edit: I originally said roll+keep but maybe that implies too much like 7th Sea. It's a cousin of WoD and SR4.

        I believe Roll+Keep is also in L5R.

Yeah I was just braindead and used the wrong term. It's a dice pool system: stat + skill against a fixed target number. Modifiers add/remove dice.

Is it stat + skill in dice, or dice + stat + skill? Or ...

oWoD uses a success-count system. D&D uses a sum-total system. Both are against a target number or higher. nWoD uses something similar, but penalties affect the pool to roll, not the success count. Shadowrun used (last I knew) a dice pool with a total value count.

So it sounds like the system you're using is more nWoD/CoD. You could, y'know, just link to the core mechanic in a post.

Sorry, Dragon Age guys. These things happen. I am deeply suspicious of a game where playable from-the-fiction characters exist, no matter how little I'm told they will affect my ability to involve myself. And yet, my nerd-crush for Dragon Age is mighty, tho I preferred the grit and mud of Ferelden.

Stat + Skill in 8-sided dice, TN 7. Modifiers affect the number of dice you roll. Same basic mechanic as nWoD and Shadowrun4, just different dice to get the percentages to come out the way I wanted. The mechanics doc kind of sucks currently, but there you go.

Also success is a bit less likely per die in your system then in SR and NWoD, .25 expected successes per die as opposed to SR and NWoD which are both .33 repeating expected successes per die.

It's not that different. .25 vs .3 for FS3 vs nWoD. And there are some other subtleties with the modifiers that shift it somewhat in certain cases. You can look at the statistics I ran for a detailed comparison. With a Routine task, Pete the Professional has an 83% with nWod and 86% with FS3.

Edit to add: I don't want to derail this thread with dice mechanics, but I'm happy to talk elsewhere if anyone cares.

I really like the idea of a Dragon Age game, but including FCs at all seems to me to be missing the point. 😕 I wish y'all the best of luck with this, though!

I too enjoy the Dragon age world, but the FC thing /really/ turns me off of it.

                          Would love some DA RP.

I'm less concerned about FCs in general than 'some rando playing Hawke' in particular, especially if the game is going to attempt to touch on some of the DA2 story points. It's not really my bag, but I'll give it a look anyhow.

Since most of it is going to happen out of sight, or up to three years from now, I don't see why it can't be NPC'd. Year one: The Hawke siblings work under someone else. Merrill is just getting there and told to sit tight. Varric and his brother are absolutely around. Qunari don't show up for a year. Fenris doesn't show up for just under a year. Anders has to participate in Dragon Age: Awakening. Isabella may or may not occasionally float into the city but isn't established for a year. Aveline may have the only other interesting story besides Varric, as she leaves the employ of whomever the Hawkes decide to work for in order to become a city guard.

After the first year, the game becomes a series of spoilers. I admit, almost none of them matter save the Qunari invasion and Martin Luther nailing his edict to the doors of the church before blowing it up because cray-cray. I can see Hawke et al. doing more interesting things between what we know of them from the game, but for the first year the most our heroes can do is play out the escapades of Hawke the Highwayman or other brief, low-level encounters.

Again, except Varric. Because Varric is badass. Nightingale and Cassandra get to do their own things too, but mostly away from Kirkwall.

All of this proves: Fans can easily ruin what they enjoy most. Stupid Theno.

Yeah, there's already a Fenris, and honestly? I mean, maybe it's just because I am totally in love with him, but who could do Varric justice??

Note - I'm not really trying to bandwagon against this, because I love love love the idea of DA themed games. LOVE. Do what you're doing.

I'd probably play were it not for the FC thing. It's an interesting concept otherwise.

Feature Character. It means different things in different contexts, but here it means a named "book" character, or character well-established in the fiction of Dragon Age 2.

We do understand there will be some people for which the use of FCs will be a turn off. I, myself, am even typically one of them. That said, I gave the place a shot, and was pleasantly surprised. Pleasantly enough that I ended up joining Staff.

So anyone on the fence, I do encourage you to come give us a look. You may like what you find.

As to the timeline, it is just about the end of Hawke's first year in Kirkwall, so many of the characters are already arriving.

And once game began, the story of the game diverted from the Dragon Age canon, if you will. There will be some points that are kept, perhaps in a different timeline than one might expect. In part for freedom of play, and in part to make it so that those who are familiar with the series don't just know the whole plot of the game.
