Sorrows.

You can only do this if you plan to make a collection like .
-
Wargaming Miniatures, it's kinda part of the hobby.
-
My wife's eye-rolling, long-suffering sigh reminded me that I do collect musical instruments of various sorts as well.

Oh God yeah. So many thousands of dollars spent on that hobby way back when.

I had 'em beat. I played historical miniatures and had a broad range of tastes in history. Three samurai armies, five Chinese armies from various points in history, Old, Middle and New Kingdom Egyptian armies plus many of their opponents (Hittites, Sea People, Assyrians, etc.). I passed over the Classical armies, thankfully. I saw too many of my friends mortgaging their homes to field Greeks and Romans (plus their opponents, natch). I did pick up in medievals, though. Oh so many fucking horsemen. Oh so many fucking Vikings and Picts. Then I again skipped over Napoleonics and ACW as money sinks for the indolently wealthy and got into WWII instead.
So. Many. Tanks.
Warhammer don't hold a candle to historical miniatures fanatics.
-
My dad, and to a lesser extent I, was really big into model trains. You want a money sink, I think it would go historical miniatures>model railway>Warhammer.
-
I'm pretty sure that model railroads, for the serious geek, outweigh historical miniatures and Warhammer put together.

@WTFE The srs bzns dollhouse folks are in the same zone. I suspect in the era of LEDs some of their stuff has come down in price, but we're talking real working miniature wiring and tiny little plugs and... it's sorta crazy.
I have also spent far too much money on large (often somewhat creepy) dolls, which should shock exactly no one. Can't afford them these days, but I wouldn't have room to put them at this point anyway.
-
@WTFE That's probably true, come to think of it...
-
I collect RPGs.
I don't play these RPGs, but I read them. I collect what ideas they have, the world-building and systems, and I imagine what it would be like to play these games if there was enough time in the world to do so.
Right now my favorite systems to collect have been Apocalypse World and Fate Core, but more of the former than the latter. I'd love to collect Invisible Sun, but as it Kickstarted at nearly $200, hahahahaNO.
-
I used to collect RPGs just that way. Indeed to a very limited extent I still do in that I have several RPGs but don't play RPGs in person ever. I just read them and sigh. (And yes, one of them is Fate Core plus the system toolkit plus Fate Accelerated plus the Romance in the Air setting book…)
Basically whenever "money" and "personal obsession" cross paths in my life, I start collecting. It's pretty fucking bad, actually. There's a reason why my wife manages the money.

@WTFE
Mildly off topic but just wanted to point of, if your are wanting to look at more settings for Fate and FAE there are a lot of them that are available 'pay what you want' on drivethruprg.com.
One of the nice things is that lets you collect them with out it having to be expensive, and completely above board as well. -
I'd rather pay what you want directly to Evil Hat's web site. Also something you can do.

I figure talk of my [weird-ass playing cards collection] is probably better kept in here than in "RL Things I Love". (I kind of completely zoned on the existence of this thread while I was posting there. Sorry 'bout that. If admins want to move my cards posts from over there to here, that'd be fine by me.)
Anyway, the cards have expanded:
- Plastic "Water Margin" Money-Suited Deck
- "Crystal" PVC Poker Set
- Plastic 釣魚牌 (Fishing) Cards
- Plastic 四色牌 (Four Colour Cards)
- Plastic 乐山二七十 (Leshan 2, 7, 10) Deck
- Plastic 四川娃兒牌 (Sichuan "Doll Cards") Deck
Clickable pics for full details and large size.
(Yes, there are more decks forthcoming, but not many. I've got two more decks on the way and then I'm done with these kinds of cards for a while. You may celebrate at your convenience.)
- Plastic "Water Margin" Money-Suited Deck
-
So, my card collection is ramping down (for a while at least) and in exchange my musical instrument collection is ramping up. This was today's arrivals. (These and my cards all came in at once because their normal delivery times were spread out over a national holiday so instead of having a few every day I had a lot all at once.)
Clickable links, yadda yadda yadda and yes, there will be more. I've got a large number of small ocarinas coming in (as gifts for students whose parents annoy me, as with the last batch).
-
So the card collection has expanded a bit again. As I said I had two more decks coming in and they arrived today. Unfortunately I lied: it turns out there was a whole genre of cards I was unaware of and I've just ordered two of those now. I expect them by the end of the week.
In this batch:

I collect evangelical paraphernalia. Anything you can get from a street missionary, from any religion.
