Kushiel Game
-
@Three-Eyed-Crow If netflix was doing their original series stuff then, like they are now, it would likely have survived, the creators would I surmise, have approached netflix, or maybe even Hulu. I still try to find it now and then and watch. It was that enjoyable.
-
Admit I wouldn't mind seeing a L&L theme done in modern or even future settings. Not enough of that.
Ah well, maybe it'll happen one day.
-
Um...
Please note I haven't slept in over a day so I might make little sense or my comprehension might be off. However, if it's a Kushiel game. I really think think it should be a Kushiel game. In the Kushiel world and in the Kushiel timeline, thus making it... I don't know, a Kushiel game?
The other ideas are great and all, but it's a bit away from those that are looking for a safe Kushiel place to play.

I have to agree with @Catsmeow here.
I would avoid an alternate timeline for modern or future or space, as interesting as those ideas are.
Maybe nudge it around to another past timeline, like the 1500s for the Renaissance or something more Musketeers era rather than going medieval, since the feel would be similar in some respects, but I don't think I'd push it further than that timeline-wise.
You could potentially do something interesting on the 'conflict' front and set it a few years before the era of the French Revolution from an alt-history approach, with the notion of the angelic bloodlines having faded a touch, which would make the nobility somewhat more insular and guarded (circling the wagons, so to speak) while more of the region's residents have very little angelic blood if any and are starting to rise in power on their own.
That, I would think, would be a more engaging spin on a different timeline without losing the 'fantasy history' vibe that I think a lot of folks enjoy about the core setting that modern/space/future would kinda smash to bits.
-
@Catsmeow If you're going to make a Kushiel's game, just make a Kushiel's game. Make it a good Kushiel's game, even. The further you stray from the original idea the more likely you are to get lost along the way.

I am gushingly pleased at how many people seem to love Kings. I was terribly sad that it was cancelled, and cemented my deep, abiding love for Ian McShane. And it really is my model for any kind of theme where you want to have a modern, active monarchy. I've just never really been certain that if I talked about it people would get context. Although, @jibberthehut, who was voting? Was it potential players, or your potential staff, or...?
-
@Cupcake I would really love to see a game with a setting similar to Kings. I just don't know if this specific project(s since two are technically being discussed, I think?) is where I'd want to see it happen.
Mostly, it feels like it would want to be its own thing.
-
@Cupcake Potential staff. We are not going with a modern setting of the theme. But we have settled on where and when. Some fierce debate but we found a compromise that makes everyone running it, happy. I would totally play in a Kings themed game though!
Hopefully we have something more concrete for folks in a few more days, but we are actively pressing forward, have procured a domain name even and :shivers: My day off from work has been productive! I think folks who are interested in playing the theme will be pleased to have an alternative to the current offerings out there.

OMG. You guys make me want to make a more modern Lords and Ladies game. I've been wanting a more modern setting for a Lords and Ladies game for ages.
-
@icanbeyourmuse So if I am understanding you correctly would that be more of an aristocracy struggling in a modern world which pays limited attention to their pedigree and their wealth is not what it once was? Or would you have events such as the Magna Carta (or your equivelant) or the French Revolution not occur and have the modern aristocracy at full or marginally diminished power? Either is an interesting concept!
-
@Akurel I'm not sure! The idea of modern aristocracy is just fun to me. I'd give it a small twist of fantasy (like certain bloodlines can wield magic).
-
I have no idea how the hell one would logic up what we consider "modern" that also includes "Lords and Ladies", because as I understand it, we're modern because we kind of, you know, evolved PAST the whole lords-and-ladies, nobility, titles mattering, etc., nonsense.
If someone ever cracked that nut, though, I bet it would be interesting.
-
@icanbeyourmuse I actually had a similar idea, in a French Revolution setting. A magic wielding nobility challenged by the dissemination and development of technology and liberal ideologies amongst the masses. Perhaps even further complicate it by having tech and magic have that age old struggle with one another. Does the nobility embrace the modern age or cling to their old powers and bloodlines even if it makes them anachronistic?
-
@gasket Well that would be part of the challenge. It either assumes that certain events or kind of events didn't happen, or that there was a more benign social contract, or perhaps that while the 'nobility' publicly appears to be a relic it has duties or privileges that it exercises in secret. Or perhaps that the aristocracy co-opts captains of industry, scientists, so on.
-
@Akurel I am a little into the idea that someone comes from the future, some how evolved to be able to use magic or a kin to it. This person(s) feels that the disolvement of aristocracy is what caused the world to end or something so s/he goes back to the past to stop the aristocracy from being ended while still pushing humans to evolve. The time traveller(s) is/are the 'magic line(s)'.
-
@icanbeyourmuse Then you get into the interesting questions. Which aristocracies is he (Pronoun for sake of convenience) preserving? Which dynasties, which nations? You'd also have to blunt major plagues that would decimate (and thus increase the value) of the workforce. 'Sufficiently advanced science indistinguishable from technology' is the vibe I get. Definitely a complex and interesting proposal.
-
I've never played a Kushiel game. Frankly I have no idea what it is. When I think of Lords & Ladies in a modern setting though? I immediately think family operated corporations in a world where corporations have an even greater impact than they already do in reality or even something akin to the mafia families that are viewed in that old Romeo + Juliet movie with Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes.
I may also just have no idea what I'm talking about.
-
@Faceless I'm picturing an unholy union of Shadowrun and Crusader Kings....and I'm not sure I dislike it.

I ran an original theme game for a bit. One of the factions was ruled by a corporate oligarchy. Members of that particular company, owner, chairman, CEO, EO were all family held and that family, like the ones that founded said company, were what I considered to be 'nobility'.
That was how I worked in a futuristic setting anyways. I have to admit, I always thought that bit of theme was really well done in comparison to the other factions.
