I've been feeling the itch to get back in to MU'ing and I'm curious as to what the current Mac client options are (besides simply installing TinyFugue). It appears Atlantis and Savitar haven't been updated in forever. Are those still what people use or are there new choices out there?

I was using Trebuchet before I switched to Atlantis. This is the first I've heard of Savitar. If there are other Mac-friendly clients, I remain ignorant about their existence,

Atlantis. The creator is out there, and she used to make appearances on MU*s and on forums.

I have a waggish sense of humor.

I find that Atlantis is still the most reliable even if it has recently for me run afoul of a specific MU*'s wonky code. I hasn't been updated in a very long time, however, and most Mac clients seem to end up being abandonware.

Oh, and if anyone tells you to use Savitar, beat them over the head with a rake until they stop moving. The interface is bizarre, and I never got it to do anything but crash.

Atlantis still works like a champ in Yosemite.

Fun? What is this fun thou speakest of?

And we all know what happened to Atlantis, right?

@ThatOneDude Yes. I always thought Apple-things were at their best when submerged in deep waters.

Even when you're trying to do Mac vs. PC wars ironically, you still end up looking really stupid.

And I should know because I have no sense of humor.

I still exist. I even still MU*!

Part of the problem is that so much of the Atlantis 1.0 codebase dates back to literally Panther; I can't even /compile/ it without booting back into 10.6 any longer because of some of that. (I wrote code that was very future-proofed for running, but apparently not very future-proofed for compiling when Apple changes all the tools.)

A while ago I began a clean rewrite, killing off a lot of the older, harder-to-maintain code and redoing things in a cleaner manner as Atlantis 2.0. So, a rewritten core that works on OSX and iOS (iPhone/iPad version!), native Dropbox integration for logging scenes such that the mobile version in 2.0 can also log into the same directories, a proxy system that lets you switch your connection from laptop to mobile to desktop without disconnecting (or even 'detach' a'la TinyFugue+Screen), stuff like that. Updating the Lemuria windowing toolkit I wrote (the thing that manages spawns) to function in a sane, modern manner now that I don't have to do Weird Goofy Nonsense to allow spawns to be torn off and docked elsewhere, etc...

I'll eventually get off my ass and finish 2.0. It's been sitting at a 60-70% done state for ages, but since nothing actually /breaks/ in Yosemite and there's been little pressure, I've admittedly been taking my sweet time about it and working on other things.

@Sparks Well, I really appreciate the client, its so WIN compared to the other options out there. FURTHERMORE... it makes all Windows clients look like a toddler drew on your screen in crayon... JUST SAYING.

No joke, Sparks now has friends who sigh wistfully at her to write a Windows version of Atlantis. (I am not one of them because I already have a Mac.)

I've updated the application more recently than you updated the docs. I WIN.

(It's actually even possible to make Atlantis work with Notification Center without issue. Just run Growl Version Detective from the Growl project's website, select Atlantis, and do 'replace with newer version'. Atlantis will handle it properly, and newer Growl will support notification center if you're on a recent enough build of OSX.)

@Sparks I would actually give you money for the damn client. I know you're not asking, I'm just saying I love it a lot and I would throw fake PayPal money at you.

Which I admittedly find funny, due to the original origins of Atlantis. Specifically, I had a project for work that had me on a Powerbook a bunch, and I missed SimpleMU while I was over on Mac OS X. I tried to convince Kath to write a Mac version of SimpleMU, and she went "I am not learning another platform. But if you write one, I'll call it the Mac version of SimpleMU."

So I started writing a Mac version of SimpleMU from scratch, but then somewhere along the way I came up with the idea of hierarchical spawns and just kind of veered off in a different direction and made the client its own thing.

So when people go "I wish Atlantis was on Windows, could you ever do that", I'm getting asked if I'd ever consider writing a Windows version of a Mac client that started as a port of a Windows client.
