@Zarkon
Yes, that too. But that takes a back seat to zany hijinks. There is a little... well, maybe a little risque stuff in some worlds (mostly like, the panty goblin thing), so be aware. -
I got to the part of Sailormoon Crystal where they introduce Chibi-Usa, and she's still as annoying as she was before. So, uh. Kill la kill time!
-
@Cobaltasaurus
I've sworn off Sailormoon Crystal. As much as I like it (and as much as she is not annoying since they are using the manga version of events), the most recent episode had an extremely unforgivable animation issue, enough to make me go 'WHAT THE FUCK TOEI'.! They had Sailormoon attack and they used, completely reused, an animation short of her doing Moon Healing Escalation. This would be fine, but they DIDN'T EVEN EDIT THE MOON STICK TO BE THE CUTIE MOON ROD.
Lazy-ass animation team.

Am I the ONLY person who hated Madoka?
Yes.
In regards to stuff kids can watch;
Wakfu (Flash but SO AWESOME WHAT)
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha (the first and second movies are basically the first two seasons but with better animation and slight edits for more cohesive stories)
Gundam Build Fighters and Gundam Build Fighters Try
The first is just awesome all around, the second is basically DBZ for the magical girl crowd (and minus Madoka's rending of heart strings), and while the Build Fighters stuff is an amazingly shameless attempt to sell you toys even for the Gundam franchise, it's also a kid friendly anime that features kids as the main characters (with a female co-lead in the Try sequal). Wakfu and Madok also feature kids in that general age bracket.
Speaking of DBZ, if you ever watched it and are in the mood for some hilarity, go check out Team Four Star's 'Dragonball Z Abridged, on youtube. It's basically a redub of much of the show in hilarious fashion. They did it by episode, but the first two or three seasons have been compiled into single videos such as: this for season 1.

Thanks for all the great responses and for the stuff that might be good for girls too. He just told me last night his daughter, who's a year behind her brother is showing interest too. I'll grab some of the recommendeds for both.
Thanks a lot!

No. Raptor lies. As previously stated I didn't care for it. The art style looks like a middle schooler did it.
-
Pretty sure that's a feature, not a bug. It adds to the WTF factor of what's going on.
You're both monsters, it's okay.

a bug
I'm aware it's a feature and not a bug. Just like an ice cream parlor may be an organic sugar-free ultra healthy place -- that's a feature not a bug. It's just a feature I'm not onboard for. -
You know.. I've never seen Madoka. It looks like it didn't even hit my radar. I had to look it up to even know what it was. Now, I feel like I need to watch it to get an opinion.

Wow, I didn't even notice that.
-
@Livia
I went '... WHAT THE FUCK, TOEI?' loud enough to wake up my dogs. -
@Bobotron I didn't notice the stick thing either but I don't really focus on things like that. I mainly like it for the artwork. It's pretty.
@Cobaltasaurus Chibi-USA is an annoying little shit, yup. The manga she is a little annoying but not nearly as bad as she is in the anime.
And in general.. I rather like the new Sailormoon over the old. Perhaps it is because it falls closer to the Manga and Usagi isn't as much of a screecher.

@icanbeyourmuse
It's really just something that jumped out at me as a glaring error, but I'm very much a 'things are in motion... why, that's weird and WRONG'. I like that they aren't expanding on the R arc so far (maybe a LIIITLE on Asanuma, but not much), unlike the Shiten'ou exposition in the first season. I really don't want a repeat of that hype train getting derailed like the Shiten'ou did. -
He is pretty cute in the series.
One peeve I have with Magical Girl animes and the like is.. WHY DO PEOPLE NOT KNOW WHO THEY ARE?! The only thing that changes is their clothes. Everything else stays the same. I suppose it could be explained away that it is that way for the reader/viewer to know who they are but they also see the transformation and the detransformation. I have never seen a magical girl anime that makes visible changes when they power up, outside the clothes.
I rant on this as a girl who is quite fond of Magical Girl things.
-
@icanbeyourmuse
Magical Obfuscation is how I always explained it (though in the SM manga, it's notable that they can recognize and do get recognized).This wasn't a thing in older magical girl series, where people actively changed forms (since many magical girl stuff at that time was social/magical, and it was a little girl turning into an adult or a teen).
On that note? Have you ever read or watched The New Legend of Snow White: Prétear? I'd recommend reading the manga, as it makes more sense than the anime (but if you like 90's anime pretty boys, watch the anime).
-
@Bobotron I havven't seen it, I don't think. I'll have to look it up. I am a fan of pretty boys, haha. Right now I'm into 'Cute High Earth Defense Club LOVE!' as well as several other anime. My current playlist on Crunchyroll:
Sailor Moon Crystal
Yona of the Dawn
Shirobako
BONJOUR♪Sweet Love Patisserie
The Testament of Sister New Devil
Unlimited Fafnir
Magic Kaito 1412
Cute High Earth Defense Club LOVE!
World Break: Aria of Curse for a Holy Swordsman
KanColle
Saekano -How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend-
Holy Knight (Undecided on this one. It's dubbed and only 2 episodes so far)
Zatch bell (I like it, despite being dubbed.) -
@icanbeyourmuse
I've heard good things of Yona of the Dawn. I'll dig around in my Big Box o Anime and see if I can find some other thoughts about some good Magical Girl anime or manga to look into. Though ones that immediately pop to mind are Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne and Tokyo Mew Mew).Right now all I'm watching is Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc-V, Gundam Build Fighters Try. Since I'm dropping Crystal and got real bored with Log Horizon 2. I'll give some of those a look-see to see if they fit my interests.
This pic is of the Prétear main cast, BTW:
And just going through my list of stuff you might like (and be aware, some of it may be older, like 90s):
- Revolutionary Girl Utena
- Kaleido Star
- Martian Successor Nadesico
- Generator Gawl
- Sakura Wars
- Vampire Princess Miyu
- Street Fighter II anime movie (English dub is really good and they have a boss soundtrack)
- Romeo x Juliet
- Tenchi Muyo!
- Robot Hunter Casshan (the 90s OVA is good, and Casshern SINS is a modern remake that's good).
- Robot Carnival (lots of shorts, but some really awesome and pretty ones)
Those are ones I've liked before, you might like.
-
)MG! It reminds me of Ouran High School Host Club!

@icanbeyourmuse
The premise is 'the guys are all magical knights from a parallel world, and Himeno is the Prétear destined to fight and defeat the Princess of Disaster, who is absorbing all life in both worlds'. The knights combine with her to give her powers, and a cool costume, based on their elements. -

I think the best part is the fact that the bad guys tend to be destroyed very quickly, like in the Manga, where as the old series was very 'monster of the week attacks friend of the week' that made all the bad guys look rather incompetent as they suffered failure after failure.
