I sent over 3 of them. I don't generally use them so they expire.

Netflix has really been upping its Anime game over the past year, including featuring seasons of series that haven't even been dubbed yet.
Try Fairy Tail, which took the Magical Battling Hero genre and made it interesting to me again, by actually giving the characters personalities and quirks.
Knights of Cydonia was really good. I haven't tried Attack on Titan -- the manga sent me on a 100 mile-an-hour bus ride into the uncanny valley (and I didn't find the story that good besides), and my stomach couldn't handle the idea of actually seeing those gross fucking Titans in motion. Bleurgh.
-
They're just as creepy in animation, @The-Tree-of-Woe . I liked it some (not all, I found myself uninterested in Our Hero's Journey) but if the titans themselves turn you off, then don't rush for it.

Did anyone need/want one of those Crunchyroll Guest passes?

Frozen 2 is a go!
[screams internally with joy]
I love Elsa so much.

@Cobaltasaurus I know you said it's not on your list but I'm still going to recommend Madoka with all these other voices. It is seriously amazing.

Here's a short list of anime I like. Maybe you'll like it too.
Puella Madoka Magica - Really, really great deconstruction of the magical girl genre. If you haven't watched it you're missing out. Perfect for Sailor Moon fans. Remember to watch the first three episodes in one sitting.
This will BREAK most magical girl fans. It's not happy happy. BE WARNED
Other ideas:
Scryed (older, but very solid sci-fi series)
A Certain Magical Index / A Certain Scientific Railgun. You can either watch it in order of release, or chronological order. I think release order is a bit better, honestly. Railgun is a spinoff of Index.
Angel Beats -- What happens after you die -- especially if you have unresolved issues and are in high school?
Clannad -- oh god...the FEELS. Best part -- the actual game is coming to Steam!
Darker than Black -- YES YES YES. So very very good.
Code Geass -- YES! Not much gore, but so very psychologically dark and twisted.
Lucky Star -- Just sheer insanity. Enjoy the ride. Same can be said about Azumanga Daioh
Nodame Cantible -- if you're into music at all, this is really good, and has a romance in it as well.
Chaos;Head, Steins;Gate and so on -- There's a bit of gore in this, and it's very dark in places, but also very good. (Note: I've yet to see Steins;Gate)
Toradora! -- Great romcom with lots of humor.
One Outs -- baseball anime. I haven't heard a lot of people talk about this, but it's very solid, IMO.
K-On -- 2 series of MOE. It's cute, and fun, about a high-school 'light music' band, all girls.
Kanamemo -- cute series about an orphan girl working for a newspaper.
Amagami and Amagami SS -- So if you aren't a fan of harem series, this is your cure. Start with typical harem...but then split the series into seperate arcs as 'what if'. So each arc is self-contained in the first series, and is just how the main character goes after /one/ girl. Then it resets repeatedly. I liked it.
Baka and Test -- more insanity -- not sure how much you're into the insane-ness, but this has it in spades
Just going to throw a few more out for fun:
Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko
Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?
Freezing (VERY good, but dark)
Working! and Working!! -- oh god, so funny
Accel World
Another (NOT for you, for others. VERY VERY VERY dark, gory and scary. It's a Japanese ghost story.)
Inu x Boku SS
Monogatari (series)
Haruhi -- Yes, even the 2nd series. Deal with it.
The 'Hentai' Prince and the Stony Cat
My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU
Sailor Moon Crystal -- retelling of the original, but more manga-based.
Durarara -- YES YES YES. -

Eden of the East? Anyone else ever watch it?
'Another' is a good anime as well- goes along well with the standard superstitions that result in crazy horror stories.Loved both of them. Still need to watch the Eden movie though. And god, Another...shudder
-
@Cobaltasaurus 100% agree with B Gata H Kei, also. It was solid IMO.
-
@Cobaltasaurus You still good on Chrunchyroll or do you need more guest passes? Mine are just gonna expire.
-
Yeah, I have a guest pass I can drop on someone. Seems a shame to let the thing rot.
-
@icanbeyourmuse, @silentsophia you can send me any that are going to expire soon. I'll take them and use them.
-
@Livia
Am I the ONLY person who hated Madoka?@Zarkon
On the note of Clannad? AIR, from the same studio. My friends and I call it the soul test because of the emotions at the end. Most of these are OVA, but some classics and oldies...
- Galaxy Express 999 and Adieu Galaxy Express
- Riding Bean (precursor to Gunsmith Cats, with the same characters in a slightly different continuity)
- Demon City Shinjuku (I have always loved this one)
- Macross Plus (THE FEELS plus THE MUSIC plus THE ROBOTS)
- Umineko no Naku Koro Ni (When Seagulls Cry) - By the same company that did Higurashi, and ostensibly in the same universe, focuses on a rich family and their family meeting, and the fact that there may -- or may not be -- a Witch causing murders.
- Devil Hunter Yohko - if you can get past the nudity/lemon portion, it's an amusing WoD-feel magical girl
- Big-O - Just watch it. It's like Batman meets Giant Robots in a city with no memories
-
I loved Madoka. And then it tore my heart into bits.
Also, man. Higurashi.
I need to catch up on Umineko.
-
I was wandering around crunchyroll last night and the title "Love, Chunibyo, and Other Delusions" caught my attention. Has anyone watched it before?
-
One of my gamers asked me last night to recommend some anime that's kid friendly (around 12yo) and not too heavy, that would be viewable for his son. Most of my recommendeds have spots of nudity here or there or are exceptionally gruesome (like I wouldn't let him watch When They Cry, for example).
He's familiar with a lot of the already common shows (naruto, bleach, dragonball, etc) I'm trying to hunt for something that's good but not viewed a lot on broadcast tv. Subtitled shows are just fine. Anyone have any good recommendations?
-
Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood should be okay, if he watched Naruto -- granted, depends on if he watched the dub or not -- they may have censored it.
I'd say a number of 4koma anime (A Channel, Azumanga Daioh, Lucky Star, Working! and the like) would be safe -- just depends on if he'd like it -- they're not typically 'boy' anime.
A lot of the problem is that (again, depending on where he watched things) much of what's shown on broadcast TV here is censored. So even the ORIGINAL VERSION of what he's watched may not be suitable in your friend's opinion.
You also have to remember that Japan doesn't have the nudity taboos that we have, as well.
I'd also highly recommend most of the Ghibli movies, honestly. Not just to you and his son, but ANYONE. They're all great to some degree or another.

@Jaded
Let's see. Things I would have liked, or did like, around that age...- If he likes the *mon-style stuff, the most recent series of Yugioh is pretty good (Yugioh CCG fare + interdimensional war).
- Magic Knights Rayearth, an oldie-but-goodie with magical girls in a fantasy land with giant robots
- Cardfight Vanguard - A more (at least at first) slice-of-life/school drama + CCG playing, that in later seasons ramps up to YGO-style shenanigans.
- Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic - A play on the 1000 Arabian Nights, with shounen magic action and a fun world. Can be a little bloody but not on the level of, say, Parasyte. Also great for older watchers who like TTRPGs, as it really is a D&D or other campaign animated in not-Arabia, not-China, not-Rome, etc.
- Cardcaptor Sakura - fun romp of magical girl and cool magical cards and costumes
- Little Nemo in Slumberland - A movie, but based on the comic strip. Good animation.
- Angelic Layer - mind-driven doll fighting tournament
- Avengers Disk Wars - Avengers sealed into supervillain containment disks, able to be released to fight by Japanese kids (not as bad as it sounds)
- Monster Rancher
- Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi - kinda crazy, about kids from Osaka world-hopping
