Eh. I don't see the point in gender swapping, personally. My experience with it on games that allowed it was TO HAVE MORE SEXXORZ, which obviously colors my thoughts on it. Legacy characters are a different matter, or proteges/people taking on that identity for their own reasons and such is all well and good and within the purview of comics.
@tnp Not a hill I'd choose to die on myself, though part of me always wants to ask "why that specific stylistic choice?" But now I'm getting into territory where I'm unsure of my own word choices when it comes to conveying my intent.

Of the three times its happened that I can think of, I can absolutely guarantee it was not TO HAVE MORE SEXXORZ with complete certainty.
It probably doesn't matter much on places that aren't trying to hold to some kind of continuity/cutoff tbh, and if they ARE holding to continuity (in the cutoff sense) then I can't imagine anybody allowing it anyway
But I'll admit I've got kind of a bias against it from seeing a bunch of gender swap chars done really really poorly

I do resent being made an unwilling party to someone else's fetish, and I doubly resent when that negatively impacts my RP, or hell, negatively impacts the RP of the other people I see around me.
(Edit: Example) I'm so tired of Logans who do nothing but sit in a room called "Logan's Cabin" or somesuch and can only be enticed out to play a skeezy Papa Bear to some X-Girl (Logan @ UH, pretty much) that a big part of me would prefer a Logan player be a specifically chosen ringer, or that he just be dead and Wolverine be Laura or Jimmy Hudson or something, which doesn't FIX the problem but at least replaces it with a new one.
My opinion sure isn't everyone's, but I think when I get into the point of people wanting to gender-swap a FC, I think 'why not just app an OC?' Mainly because in so many cases, gender is such a formative force that, for example, female Captain America would be worlds different from man Captain America. In that case just app an OC female Captain Switzerland or something.
Not really taking things like that into account makes me think the gender swap decision is mainly someone's fetishistic choice, or the only way they personally want to RP the FC.
I don't think I've seen gender swaps a lot, however, so much as creative interpretations of FC sexuality. Which is also always someone just wanting to bring out their particular fetish into the FC. I don't think I've ever seen that go over well. Ever.

Actually, someone apped Wolfsbane (Rahne) as a male and played him for a bit. As for why gender swapping, why play an Alt U version of a character? Because it's a different take on it that can be interesting. It's all about what you do with it and how you play it.

Yeah, uh, are we talking about "adding hardcore fetish interest to an FC" or are we having the argument "taking an FC who generally appears as straight in canon and exploring bisexuality on a MU* is about someone playing a fetish"? Because if it's the latter, that's gross to say, and also, I have seen it go over well plenty of times.
I am not - or at least, I am trying not to. I am talking more in line with the former. I have DONE the latter, myself.

If changing an FC to only be, basically the idea of the char and power set and maybe the same colorful tights. Why not just OC it. Sure writers change lots of details all the time. But OC, and original theme in general, has so much potential, why just take name and powers of an FC. Another poster said they like FC for some established potential relationship driven dynamics. The choosing theme and cutoff informs players that like some basis for FCs what to expect.
I'm good either way but goes back to what @Kanye-Qwest was getting at. Allowing or disallowing FC alterations and to what extent becomes this. Either way, staff allowing or disallowing change to various degree, does then require defending with current or potential other player's or accepting that choice may deter potential players.

I have to admit, I wish I had the guts to just go ahead and app some characters I love as being bi or gay. As you say, there aren't a ton of choices and I always feel a little weird playing straight when I'm not for a couple of different reasons.
Firstly, I worry about making it too broad and stupid (rawr, football and boobs!)
Secondly, I've tried playing characters who have canon hetero relationships in comics and people just will not take 'my version of Spidey is focused on school and webslinging, he's not looking for love' for an answer.
On the other hand, I feel like if I app, say, Nightwing or Red Hood as being into dudes, I'm going to have to wade through a mountain of assumptions about what I'm actually doing on the game. And if I don't include that in the app and I do end up in romantic RP, then I feel like I've lied by omission to the staff, who might not be cool with Dick being into dicks.

I wouldn't worry about it a whole lot, just play the character they way that feels right to you, and people will either decide to rp with you or not. Most likely related to factors completely unconnected to your characters activities.
@collective The only time sexuality of a character is important to me, is when someone is trying to force their idea of the characters sexuality onto me.
One time I app'd Iceman way way way before there was any young gay iceman from the past, and people kept trying to pressure me into playing him as gay. I refused. It caused me a lot of angst.
I am not straight RL, but that character, the original Iceman, was straight to me, and I was going to play him that way because that's how I saw him in my head.
Needless to say, those people trying to tell me /how/ to play /my/ FC, was one of the quickest turn offs to an FC ever.
It's why I don't like FC's anymore, to be honest, because no matter how you play it... someone is going to be upset with it.
You can't please everyone, so don't even try, but you can avoid that hassle by just making OC's.

I've chimed off on this before (re: FC sexuality), but I don't think the concern is so much on the sexuality of the character. I think it has more to do with how the character will behave under the control of the player.
I have no issues with a female Captain America or even a gay Captain America (there might be a compelling story to tell in Steve Rogers arriving in the modern age and realizing that he can be gay in 2017 with a certain amount of respect that wasn't prevalent in 1941).
I like to think that players would approach those gender/sexuality issues as a means of compelling story.
HOW and EVER...
I think the real concern people have is in a Captain America transported to 2017 as FUCK EVERYTHING THAT MOVES BONDAGE SEX SWING NEVER INVOLVES IN ANY STORY AND SENDS EVERYONE DICK PICS Captain America, thus really putting aside any meaningful role playing with the character concept in favor of using the character as a sandbox Shang Alt.
We'd seen mentions recently of gay fish Daken uncomfortably hitting on people IC and OOC, and mentions of Sex Magic Sorcerer Supreme Dr Strange.
So, in summary, I think the concern is less on gender/sexuality of the FC and more on whether or not they'll be used like a Harvey Weinstein extension of the player's whims, thus becoming more of a distraction than a contribution.
Delete the Hog Pit. It'll be fun.
