The "kittens", at just over a year are forgetting what "soft paws" means.

Pretty sure that Tinuvial's connection matches mine, sitting here in the suburbs of a decent-sized U.S. city. Why yes, I do have Comcast, why do you ask?

Yeah, I had Charter when I had mine like that.

And then I tried to get ATT's UVERSE because everyone around me sung their praises and OOOH'd and AAAH'd over how AMAZING they were!

Download speeds of .5-1.5Mbps for more than Charter cost.
          I called. Had a fit.

"Well, that's your own fault for living so close to the business district. They get preference over residential customers."

Shit you not, that was their response. And then they tried to penalize me for backing out of the contract. After they, y'know, had guaranteed me certain speeds for the rate.

It was actually the first time I ever yelled at reps over the phone.

It's not as bad as when I was on 56k! 32 down, 3 up. On a good day. Packets going up hill both ways, in the snow! I got lag connecting to MU*s.

@tinuviel You kids and your fancy 56k zooming along! <shakes cane> I remember getting a new 9600 baud modem and thinking how fast it was.

I had only 56k ISDN until 2004. We kept getting advertisements for cable in our neighborhood because of our zip code, I guess.

                It was like a mockery.

                'CALL NOW FOR...'
Call. 'Oh, well, uh... we don't... technically... offer... it there.'

                😞

Part of why I stuck to MU*ing! Everyone else was already on to multiplayer games and I was still stuck, y'know, watching images load by the pixel some days.

I thought of putting this in the Random Links thread but it irks me enough.

@arkandel Given the flat earth map, it seems a simple and doable test would be to find two land masses that are close according to the globe, but far according to the flat map, and fly the distance. You don't even have to violate their "ice walls".

@misadventure You don't think it's easier to simply refute the '*Earth's curvature from a plane' argument?

Basically they are saying when you're in the air things stuff in the horizing appear round because the airplane's windows are rounded.

Fine. So why don't stuff appear rounded from the plane's windows when it's on the ground?

@arkandel The answer here is don't put these people in charge of any form of non land navigation, fact checking, or positions where you need to trust their overall judgement.

It is unlikely this will affect their breeding success one way or another, nor is it likely inheritable.

(Or they could just circumnavigate Antatica on a boat, using that "trusted" method of ships mapping the shoreline. I believe they will find it much smaller than their map suggests, though that may be due to mind control, time warps, Ka-Zar, Marshal Will and Holly, or being replaced by dopplegangers.)

Fourth nor'easter this month. It's been a colder March than February, when we had some random 60 degree days.

I don't mind the cold and actually prefer it to summer, but... piss off, winter. You had your chance.

Dear cold-call and robocall crowd that just can't wait to tell me what a great deal they offer on credit card processing services: fuck all the way off.

I get at least four calls from various idiots of this stripe per day since I have a business.

Apparently, they think 'I have a business == I am the dumbest motherfucker who ever lived', because holy wow, part of running a business is researching that shit oneself and finding out about companies and what they offer, and I can pretty much guarantee the ones that are reputable and credible are not robocalling people off a list.

'Research your needs and assess pros and cons' of any service may not be rule #1 of owning a business, but it's sure as shit in the top 5. This strikes me as a uniquely stupid demographic to target this way as a result, let alone have so many different collections of idiots trying to do it.

"We still have a few medical bills in collections because my husband is an idiot sometimes, I DO NOT PERSONALLY QUALIFY TO ACCEPT CREDIT CARDS PER REGULATIONS ON ACCOUNT OF THIS," does not even stop these fucking morons from calling several times per day. (We just use the family one, because we still have it and ultimately: duh.)

                                    Oh fucking well.

@tinuviel In the midst of The Great Studio Cleanup, I had all my cards/IDs/etc. in a little ziploc bag.

Following in my mother's footsteps, "I just put it somewhere it would be safe while we're cleaning and moving things around."

When anyone in my family says this, we are not to be fucking trusted, because this actually means, "I put it somewhere totally safe that made flawless sense at the time! It's totally safe now! ...from me ever finding it again within the next five years."

...so now I need to get a new driver's license but I'm not rushing to replace the cards.

                                            Oh fucking well.
