@JinShei I want to upvote this a thousand times.

Also, if you are going to steal your entire essay, don't write it on my specialist topic and misuse some of my favourite sources! 77% stolen, with a thesaurus used for the other words, changing the meaning of the sentence! ARGH!

    head bang

Now I want to know more. What was the topic? Give an example sentence!

@Derp They lifted it directly from the NICE guidelines, and cited authors who hadn't published on that topic in that year. πŸ˜› I can't give more info without giving away too much of the student but I get regular google scholar alerts on the leaders in my specialism, to keep up with the topic.

Our industry is being told today that the 3G sunset has begun. On January 1st, 2020, AT&T and Verizon will no longer activate or support 3G devices. Their goal is to have all of their coverage areas moved to 4G by the start of 2021, at which time no 3G device will work on an active network.

Some independent companies and smaller telecoms are already removing 3G from their active networks. So if you are on one of these and your 3G phone is having issues, this could be why.

Would have been nice to know this like...8 months ago.

I love my job, but it doesn't pay nearly enough, so now I'm stressed out about scraping a budget to live on for the next two weeks.

Same. Love mine, even if it pays half the median salary for this profession.

@Derp Sadly, I have to look for something that pays more. I can't afford to live with what they pay me, let alone get ahead and save.

I just learned my Acer Chromebook can charge from either of its two USB-C ports, not just the one next to the battery indicator light.

This is a peeve because the one next to the indicator light has been busted juuusssttt enough that I have to place the cord JUST SO AND THEN NOT MOVE to get my computer to charge for about a year now.

I could have not been aggravated for a year if I'd just tried the other side.

When someone is miserable about themselves, and they're slowly getting better, do not tell them "oh but you're getting better!" when they tell you they're miserable.

Yeah I feel this pretty hard. It's an almost forever-battle that gives and takes as time goes on. You can have a string of good days, maybe a week, maybe a month, and then it'll attack again out of nowhere. Back to the bottom of the pit.

Living in the southwest has done wonders for my fibro, but it can still hit bad if I'm not careful. So the 'but you're better!' is kind of vexing I know. Because you want them to understand its a 'better as compared to...' or'better for now' and you're terrified they'll be annoyed as if you did it on purpose when your illness flares up anew.

I both love and dreadfully hate the process of hiring inspectors during the home buying process.

Hate: Hundreds of dollars spent that you won't get back just to determine if you want to buy a house. This could end up resulting in a net loss of 400-700 dollars while hunting for a house.

Love: That money isn't wasted. 400-700 dollars is worth it to avoid losing tens of thousands if you purchase a house with serious issues. It's smart to be the person paying someone to watch your back. I'd rather lose 500 dollars "checking" than to buy a house and suddenly find myself mired in a 6000-15000 dollar foundation repair problem that must be fixed.

Still hate: When you identify an issue during the home inspection process that requires a different inspector to determine the total estimated repair cost of an issue found: "I might not buy this house at all at this point, but I'm legally obligated to continue hiring inspectors to provide a list of repairs that need to be done, which the seller may say 'no thanks' to."

                                Dolla. Dolla. Bills. Yall.

Well, it's... complicated. I have panic disorder with agoraphobia, a happy gift I received after the bar exam. I can drive without much issue to about a half mile distance from my house. Beyond that, I'm at real risk of getting a panic attack that renders me non-functional for most of the day. I also have pretty severe depression, which isn't terribly surprising given that I'm under self-imposed house arrest.

I also do, for as new an attorney as I am, very good work. So I am given particular allowances by my bosses, who happen to be my friends, who founded our firm when we all said to hell with the public defender office. I come in three times a week for half days and telecommute the rest of the time. Nobody else has that luxury. So given that I spend so much time at home already...

Basically, I hate myself for having mental illness, and the fact that I am winning legal fights against much more experienced attorneys is barely enough to convince me that I'm anything more than an awful, lazy person who deserves nutrient paste and a small room and not much else.

Speaking of taking time off for health..... I just called out for the day because my stomach hurts enough that I don't trust myself to drive.

I nearly did anyway, but when I doubled over in pain multiple times just getting my things together I realized it would be for the best of I didn't risk myself and others on the road.

Now to lie down and try to sleep despite the pain and mild terror this is going to end up in a hospital trip (I have certain abdominal issues that mean severe pain could be a major issue...)

Do you win cases? If the answer is "yes," then I really don't give a fuck what others think about the accommodations you get.

Do you bill sensibly and properly? If the answer is "yes," then I really don't give two fucks what others think about the accommodations you get.

Do you need these reasonable accommodations to function, plus some extra time to deal with shit outside your control that will affect your ability to succeed? If the answer is "yes," then I really don't give three fucks what others think about the accommodations you get.

We are in a results-driven profession. We are expected to win. As a shareholder, it is my job to get the best and the brightest to win. And if that means I have to let you wear a headband with a horn sticking out the front, so be it.

Client: Why does she look like a unicorn?
Me: Would you care if she won your case?
                                      Client: No.
Me: Then meet your new attorney, Twilight Sparkle, and watch her do her thing.

What you have isn't a luxury; it is a reasonable accommodation arguably mandated by the ADA. And as a result of that accommodation, your firm has the rough equivalent of a nuclear fucking weapon. My new associate may not be terribly savvy with the Civil Rules, but she eats witnesses alive on the stand while I gleefully sit in the first chair.

@Rinel -- Gany's right. That is absolutely a reasonable accommodation, and the law is absolutely on your side. But more importantly, as the legal profession moves increasingly toward the digital realm, many attorneys don't even work out of offices at all, and function perfectly fine. (@saosmash might disagree with me here) So what difference does it make if you're in a particular room, working from a particular computer, at a particular time? You're still doing the job. I'm sure that you keep your clients informed, and if you're winning cases for them, I doubt that they really give a shit if you stay in a particular building (unless they're very old, and even then, you're still winning cases). So, do you.
