I'm a freak who in general enjoys being middle aged most of the time tbh. And I'm really looking forward to my 50s and 60s though I'm not there yet.

But im annoyed by 2 things that I'm pretty sure are age related.

One, my night driving vision is utterly shit which is a big bummer.

But also I'm wondering how the fuck did i multitask in mmos so effortlessly when I was in my 20s and early 30s? These days I can do things in my mmo. Or I can read chat in it. Or I can listen. Trying to do 2 or 3 of those things is not something my brain can handle anymore. 😕

There were multiple Nazi rallies in Florida last weekend. Lest anyone think I'm using that term as a pejorative, I'm talking people who literally wore swastika armbands and attacked passersby while shouting about how they're going to kill all Jewish people. I heard about them on Maddow and went looking for more info, but for some reason--either because my search-fu sucks or because major news outlets are complicit in normalizing Nazis--I can't find any direct coverage of the rallies themselves, just people offering partisan coverage of Florida's governor refusing to condemn Nazis because he's counting on their support at the polls.

You probably won’t. The general consensus is that giving them airtime does nothing but help them, kind of for the same reason we don’t give much coverage to suicides anymore because it does no real good and a whole lot of harm.

People know nazis are bad. We fought a war about this. The whole world was in on it.

The only thing coverage of these rallies in some neutral fashion does is give the impression this is accepted and normalized and that if you do it you will get media attention.

For some reason my Facebook feed has been flooded with shitty advertising for nutjob End of Days-style prepper products full of Christian symbolism, dumb "patriotic" gear, and gross Men's Rights video seminars.

What the fuck did I do to trigger this?? How do I turn it off??

My YouTube recs are going through a similar thing, of being recommended some annoying transphobic 'doctor' who also advocated for like, 15 hour work weeks if you're not a lazy piece of shit. I keep smashing dislike, it keeps serving them up.

                    Thanks, algorithm.

I got rid of Facebook over the ads they were targeting me with. The final straw was an ad offering to send "flower" bouquets made out of bullets to the special lady in your life, as if that's not an explicit threat. I have never in my life shown interest in firearms, so I must assume the ads were linked to my presence on feminist groups.

So. Way back in like November or so, Facebook decided that it was going to disallow ad-targetting based on things like political affiliation.

                        Sounds good right?

Well. Maybe not. Because the crazy right-wing prepper gun cult community has a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuge amount of content on Facebook because they learned really, really on how to game the algorithms. It's a thing that's been known forever and ever, but most of the left didn't see any of that because -- you were not the target of those ads. Old people and other right-wingers in red and purple states are the target of those ads, getting everyone ramped up for whatever kind of nonsense is going down.

Know why you're seeing ads for weird right-wing shit?

Because you're now seeing what everyone else on Facebook sees regardless of your political affiliation.

                        Gratz.

For society, it absolutely is good. Micro-targeting ads and news articles is a horrific practice.

For individuals? Sure it's annoying, but that's what the "report as offensive" button is for.

Just remember that it works the same way for:

                            LGBT+ Content
                            Police killings of POC
                            Covid-19 Vaccine Information
                            Messages meant to counter disinformation
                            Etc.

And the people who are likely to smash the button on the above as being offensive already have an advantage in that they've been thorougly programmed by Facebook to do just that.

Sure, and that's when sensible content moderation comes in.

Someone smashing "report offensive" on hate speech? That's good.

Someone smashing "report offensive" on covid-19 vaccine info? Ignore them.

Someone smashing "report offensive" on a cute puppy video? Clearly they need to be banned. (j/k)

ETA: I realize this is oversimplified, but at the same time? The people running the platform are responsible for building the kind of platform they want. If someone smashes "report offensive" on LGBTQ+ content or covid-19 information or anything else FB considers legit/valuable? FB has a choice of how to react to that. They could ignore it, they could ban the person for abusing the report feature, they could silence that type of content for that user only, or - radical idea - they could show them MORE of that type of content in the interests of educating them. You get the kind of community you foster.

@solstice YouTube serves widely disliked videos because it counts dislikes as engagement and finds somebody else to show it to. I'm not sure how the dislike button factors in to tailoring your personal feed but the fact that people clicked on the button and/or commented even to say that it's utter shit I'd what makes the video get recommended to the next person.

Modern Nights, the M20/V20 game, is all my fault :(

If you come across it in your feed/up next, click on the three dots near the video and select 'don't recommend this channel'.

Youtube considers any engagement (clicking on a video, liking/disliking, leaving any comment) in its algorithm on what to recommend you. It can't tell if you're watching a video you hate accidentally, to be a troll, or because you support the content, and it doesn't care. It just wants you to watch.

First world problem - Amazon repeatedly does not follow delivery directions. They keep leaving the packages in front of the secure front door, and not on our patio... which is like 4 feet to the left. We've asked them in the directions to leave things on the patio.

A - we have a camera, so we see the delivery and get it ASAP.
B- everyone here knows we have a camera and don't mess with our patio.
C- It's just safer than leaving it by the front door.

Today? Went out as soon as I saw the email.. and the package isn't there anymore.

Yesterday? My roommate's package made it into the building.. at someone else's apartment.

                                      Just.. grrr.

I used to be a blood donor for years. My type is O-negative, too.

However there's a chance of Mad Cow Disease if anyone has spent three months or longer cumulatively in the United Kingdom from 1980 to 1996... which I did as a student.

(Apparently this can be tested for but only with an autopsy, which I object to)

                                        Meh.

I mean -- it's 2022 and I'm still not allowed to donate blood unless I decide to not have sex with my partner for three months just because we're both men.

                                          So.

I used to give blood all the time. But I've had problems with iron for ages, and if I fail their iron test one more time, they will ban me from donating forever.

Money's been tight, so no iron supplements. So no blood giving.
