The idea of all of my bigs being off to school has been very abstract this summer but it gets rolling in 2 weeks and having 3 tuition bills makes it real in mind of a momentary panic attack way. But still I'm starting to freak out a bit emotionally too (similar to what I experienced when they were all in grade school full time that first year!) ngl. I'm irritated that I'm feeling empty nest and my nest is not empty yet, and excited for them and also trying to not get overly involved while also hugging them a lot more at random (they are tolerant of this).

But yeah. Freaking out a bit. Transitions are sometimes hard.

My little cat got out last night and has not returned.

I’m not sure how or why. I have scoured the house. Whenever she has been trapped before, she meows her way out. This morning, it is eerily quiet.

I don’t know what to do.

Check the shelters to see if someone has picked her up / alert them to contact you. If you know your neighbors well, maybe also give them a heads up. Other than that, just call for her and wait for her to find her way back.

@ganymede My cat got out once and got scared and found a place to hide right around the house. Apparently that's pretty common, especially with indoor cats, so check for hideyholes around your/your neighbors' houses. (Mine was under the deck.) You could also put out some food to lure them back. Hope they come home soon!

This is what I am doing. There aren’t many places to hide as I don’t have a deck, but I put food and shelter on the porch.

Meanwhile, I have a distraught partner and daughter, and my son be like: “OMG WE CAN GET ANOTHER ONE.”

If there is one thing that is super awesome about working for a finance company, it's being able to blurt out the following when dealing with my husband's former employer and the bullshit they pulled with his 401k.

"Yeah, sooooooooo.... the action that you've taken with his account is definitely a violation of ERISA regulations passed all the way back in 1974, the fiduciary obligations you're bound by, and ignores successor plan requirements that would prevent exactly this sort of forceout, not to mention the failure to even notify us of any of this. Will you be sending over the paperwork needed to correct this and transfer the funds to our custodian of choice or should I begin our written complaint to the Department of Labor now?"

@ganymede At the moment I'm considering it because apparently the fuck up with his severance that we thought meant it had expired due to post office delays was actually due to the company pre-dating the paperwork by three months. Between this and the 401k issues....

The trouble is a lawyer would cost more than we'd get, but I really, really, really want to stick it to these assholes.

So, DOL complaint it probably is.

You know, a lot of ERISA violations can result in awards of attorney’s fees, so many attorneys take such cases on contingent upon such awards or on a contingency fee. So you could look one up, and work it out.

Worth a shot.

That.... is really good to know.

Because thus far by my count, they've:

Violated ERISA protections by transferring the money from a 401k into an IRA without written spousal consent, which I can't even do with a 403b I've had five times as long as we've been married
Violated fiduciary responsibilities by transferring the money to a custodian with some of the highest fees and poorest service in the industry
Enacted a force-out prior to the time normally allotted, during which the money should've been in a successor plan
Failed to notify us of any this, with the previous plan provider claiming the employer was responsible as the plan sponsor and the employer claiming this was done by the financial company and -- at least as of earlier tonight -- neither party being able to provide us with copies of the written notifications that are required when plan changes are made

And while the HR representative we spoke to is attempting to claim that the company no longer exists and therefore there's no one that can be held responsible for any of this, they're continuing to do business under another name with money from a private investment firm that acquired them and re-formed the business. All without passing through bankruptcy first, so while we all know what happens when one assumes, leaves me with the impression that investors would now be at least partially responsible for any liabilities the company held at acquisition.

I work in direct patient care. Have for twenty years. That means I stopped wearing my rings nineteen years ago. They trap germs and they feel gross with all the handwashing I do, holding all that water between the metal and my flesh. It's not just in my professional life, either. I'll break one out for a special occasion, but I've just fallen out of the habit of wearing jewelry on my fingers.

So why the fuck did I just find a ring out in my yard? I didn't wear it out there. I haven't worn it in more than a year. How did it get out there? No one else could have thrown it out there, so it must have been me, but when, and how?

This is going to bug the shit out of me.

Crop tops are a thing. I love that I see lots of young folks of diverse sizes and shapes looking cute and rocking them.

But when they creep also into clothing targeted to my demographic, like not AARP eligible but heavy on the middle aged chubby lady--i mean nobody wants to see that. I need to reach over my head a lot (I'm also short), from getting shit off shelves or dancing around with my preschool class. And now EVEN IF you find shirts that are fine in front and back, they go up on the sides. I can't wear standard tees due to school dress code except on Fridays.

You know what is worse than inadvertent side boob? Unwanted side muffin top. (Though I understand from friends either sounds better than unexpected side balls when it comes to possessor comfort) And its a bad idea for a uterus posesser of my age to have to wear layers, if you don't want us to look like a sweaty mess.

The lead teacher laughed at me yesterday until I pointed out her shirt was doing the same thing so at least misery has company.

I'm on a plane and there are 15 passengers in the entire plane with several empty rows and several empty seats. This lady came in and made some other lady move out of her seat, to the very next seat over.

If it weren't barely over a dozen people I wouldn't side eye thatP but if you wanted and window seat so hard you could have sat in the entirely empty row in front of you or the entirely empty row behind you.
