DC : Gods and Monsters MUX
-
Hi there!
So, originally I had not intended for this to wind up being a fully open game, but after some discussions, we've changed our stance on that and a friend suggested I post an ad here.
Wiki : http://godsandmonstersmux.com/index.php/Main_Page
Our goal here is to try and provide and maintain a coherent DC universe. This is not a "free for all" in terms of what is available for characters and stories. Rather than year 1, we have gone with a "year 4" setting, so characters like Superman and Batman have been around, and there's some room for sidekicks/etc to be popping up without it being super weird. Some sacrifices have been made in regards to certain variations of 'legacy' characters being banned at this time and similar things.
The common point for most things is considered to be n52, but we are by no means a "pure n52" game. We've got a customized theme and setting and have decided to focus the game on three specific 'areas'. Those being Gotham, Metropolis, and Themyscira. Each location has a different 'focus' in terms of the thematic elements likely to be found there.
At Gods and Monsters MUX we want to create a world where a lot of the mystery and mythical themes to the DC Universe are still alive for our players to explore. This isn't a world where Superman has been saving the planet from "INTERGALACTIC MEGATHREATS" for decades and decades.
More info about all that, and our policies, can be found on the wiki of course!

This is kind of important that should have been included here:
Original Characters
Pure and simple, OCs are not allowed on God and Monsters. -
What @TNP said. I was considering the game until I saw that. I'm not a fan of playing 'featured' characters.
-
Bizarrely you seem to be using the code from my DC: Rebirth game...
Edit: Actually it's the code as modified for an X-Men game I donated it to. Just jarring to log onto a different game and see it since I wasn't informed about it at all.
-
@aphrodite To get this out of the way, how are you deciding who's going to play the 'big guns' of the DC Universe?
Or to slightly rephrase this, what's the chance those roster spots will be taken by the time/before the game opens?
-
@aphrodite Also curious...
What's the policy on sexuality? Since you don't allow OCs, and DC has even less LGBT FCs than Marvel does, do you allow switching sexualities for those who prefer to play gay characters?
-
@tnp FWIW, I saw the following on their wiki's (Character) Guidelines page, under Canon:
... We don't care if you make a bisexual Batman or make Deathstroke a patron of the arts, as long as the character is still recognizable by other players and, more importantly, has an excited, story-driven player behind it.

I always wondered how that works when a character switches hands. Is the new player forced to maintain the in-game sexual orientation? Are all characters going to end up being bisexual in the long run?
-
I feel that if Clark Kent gets to be gay, then Lois Lane gets to be a gay male if the players so desire. Don't care that much about player takes on characters, but the point of a universe with a canon list of player characters seems to be being recognizable individually and in potential relationships.
Otherwise, Robin can pair up with The Question in his first appearance, and Wonder Woman and Vandal Savage can be bitter divorcees who still love one another deeply.

I'd play the fuck out of this relationship.

I think that is why they are divorcees.
Just saying that once you open the characters to non-canon, you may as well go all the way, or you'll end up with the appearance or the actuality of biases based on favorite story arcs, personal preferences and variable enforcement as staff opinions change.

That's the main reason I really don't like swapping a canon character's gender or sexuality UNLESS game policy is that there's no forced continuity if the new player doesn't want there to be.
I only saw the website briefly before work (and now during lunch) so didn't get to look it over to any real extent, thus missing the quote @Phase-Face made.

I'm trying the place out. Largely 'cause I've got a char I've always wanted to play.
+sheets are open, which I find swell. So far, the majority of people around have been pretty cool and Staff is friendly. I'm liking the vibe of the place so far. Will it be perfect? No clue. But I'm willing to give it a shot.

God and Monsters...
But not the Gods and Monsters with Zod-Superman, VampireBatman and Apokalyptian Wonder Woman.
That made me sad. I was almost hopeful for a superhero MU* there.
-
Man, just my luck to find it just as my two favorite characters to play got snapped up. Maybe next decade.

I just wanted to update:
I know some folks were bothered by lack of OCs here and I get it. I won't argue that point at all. I can totally understand why it'd be a bummer.
However, I am having a hell of a time on this place. Everyone has been a lot of fun. It's one of the most upbeat, friendly games I've been on in a while. CG is very easy (it's really just making sure you know the character you're playing and which 'version' you've chosen, be it a specific one or your own spin or what). Staff is helpful, players are helpful. The sheets are more there as reference than any hard and fast thing to go by.
I and Batman (yes, we have a Batman who not only RPs regularly, but in public, and runs things) are both running plots. If you like DC and don't mind FC-only, I really do recommend checking it out.
(P.S. The last person apping Superman has been offline over 5 days. He will prob. be open soon. I also would love to see people app Blue Beetle and Booster Gold. Like oh man they'd be freakin' awesome to see, y'all. Also, us mystic folks would be thrilled for an Etrigan. We can't make up our own limericks all day! And, I'm working on a Killer Frost app and there's no other ice villains yet, so. Y'know, there's an option for the types that like playing villain-y sorts.)
-
I can vouch to Batman being really active in actually doing things for the public on the regular. The dude's got some great plots going on.
-
I want to put in an echo for this place being a great one to try out too, and hoping to see more folks show up and try it out.
There are a couple active groups RPing and TPs running or being setup, including the usual stuff in Gotham, the future Titans working on getting their team together, and some plotlines on Themyscira.
If anyone here is looking for an opportunity, feel free to ping me here and I can maybe offer some character guidance on character options etc.

Well, I'm digging into the wiki now. With Clark open and a general conceptual idea of 'world of cardboard/everyman Christopher Reeve' Clark Kent in my head, I'm kinda leaning that way.

Staff posted a couple days ago that they're accepting +pitches via +request and I haven't seen anyone new on the bit (I'm guessing they're wanting it this way since we've had a few failed attempts now). I'd say if you get a good idea, make a temporary bit and hang out with us in the OOC Room!
I'm pageable on Zatanna or Caitlin if anyone wants to chat, but pretty much everyone there has been cool. Bruce knows the sheet system well, so anyone joining can probably find a great resource in him (it's just a system I'm not as confident in). And I'd be more than happy to help you research and throw around ideas if there's a character you might wanna play, but aren't sure about.
Since it's more-or-less a "year one" game, you can totally do your own take on a character so long as it's at least grounded in canon (like, don't go TOO off the rails, y'know?). My Caitlin Snow / Killer Frost is a bit CW and a lot my own take since the comic versions of her are so very two dimensional, but I wanted someone more confident than the CW Caitlin (sorry, dear, you're too mousey). My Zatanna is very inspired by Justice League: Dark and N52.
