Good or New Movies Review

@arkandel Cate did amazing with a shitty character. She really brought Hela to life. And yeah, it is TOO stupid at times, but overall a very good ride. I would put it under GOTG2 and very few other movies from Marvel, but it is WAY better than most of their stuff. Despite the "THE MONSTER HAS A FUNNY VOICE U GAIS" moments, and having no dramatic weight, it is a good 'shut down your brain and laugh' movie.

We're gonna go see it next weekend instead of this weekend for Real Life Scheduling Reasons, but I'll be honest....
Between both the Marvel universe and the Norse mythology, the fact that Thor is just cheerfully stupid and innocently enthusiastic about pretty much everything is fantastic. I don't want a Thor movie to be SUPER SRS BIZNIZ; I want it to be Chris Hemsworth hamming it up with all the unabashed joy of a puppy who is surprisingly good at violence.

MCU Thor is the best thing.
I hate Thor as a character in the comics. "Oh wow, a serious guy who is basically invincible and the strongest person in the universe, SO AMAZING!" Is so dull to me.
I like dumb, excitable Thor who wants to smash shit and falls for Loki saying "LOOK OVER THERE!" 10 times straight.
-
@tempest My favorite Thor is probably Thor and his roommate Darryl.
-
@bobotron What I read was the rights for Thor stand-alone movies are kind of blurry (another company would take a cut), so the way they're doing it instead is 'splitting' a full featured Hulk movie into several arcs and plugging them into other movies.
Apparently Mark Ruffalo really approves of this approach, too.
-
Thor: Ragnarok is Hela good.
-
I'm just gonna leave this here... Thor 4D, actual Thor actors and interviews included!
-
Mark Ruffalo can't carry a movie anyways.
He's about as bland as a potato.
-
MCU Thor reminds me of the things I loved about Christopher Reeve's Superman. And I'm glad someone does, because the DCCU broody miseryguts Superman doesn't work for me, like, at all.
-
@arkandel
True. I just really liked the bit more serious angle to the Ragnarok event in the comics, and the more serious angle to Planet Hulk as well. I was pleased. Cate Blanchett plays an epic villain, I have loved seeing her as evil since she was Lady Tremaine in Cinderella. Not that it was bad; I laughed my ass off and enjoyed it immensely. I just was expecting something slightly different. -
From the previews and scores I'm reading online, it really sounds like Justice League will be disappointing, or at least average.

And this is a surprise because ... ?
-
@arkandel Having seen it last night, it actually wasn't nearly as bad as I expected. It definitely felt like two disparate movies smashed together, though, and the edges were very visible. But it was still enjoyable, if very flawed in execution.
-
@ganymede Hey, it's disappointing. I wanted a JLA movie to be awesome, if for no other reason than that to ensure there are more made.
-
I think JLA was doomed to be that, as @sparks said. I'll still see it - I'm one of the few that kind of enjoyed Batman V Superman, and I LOVED Wonder Woman. But they changed tack too late in the game, when I heard they were doing reshoots to try and give it a lighter feel.
Also fuck Brett Ratner and fuck changing the costumes of the Amazons to be skimpier. I'll still see this. Probably. Maybe.

@arkandel
I really thought Entertainment Weekly's remarks were pretty amusing. They said, "Affleck looks like the highest-paid captive in a hostage video."Everyone I've listened to doing a review of the movie tend to agree that Jason Momoa as Aquaman did very well with a B list DC character. And they all seemed to agree there was not enough of the Flash.

I did too, but then they allowed Zack Snyder to direct it, and that's when you should have known that it wouldn't be that great. I'd let Michael Bay direct over Zack Snyder.
So long as Zack Snyder is allowed to direct, the DCU will never, ever take off. Ever. Ever, ever.
-
-puts a pin in the JL discussion for a moment-
I saw Lady Bird last night and it was really lovely.
-pulls pin back out again-
I'm a bit burned out on superhero movies so I'm probably going to pass on Justice League but I just wanted to pop in to say Zack Snyder is the worst and I don't know why Hollywood continues to give him movies. I am scarred and angry forever for the time I will never get back from watching the dumpster fire that was Sucker Punch.

I don't understand how anyone could have enjoyed that movie. I mean, the false eyelashes alone were so ridiculous that they were characters unto themselves.
