@Arkandel God damn. That's bleak as fuck. Here's why it's bullshit, though.

The viewer's perspectives about the qualities of the efforts and actions of the Original Trilogy war against the empire are god-level perspective. They know the writers, sometimes the script, the actors, the backend drama, and can draw a line of consequence between a movie made in 1978 to a movie made in 2019 and go "SEE? ALL FOR NOTHING, THIS IS BULLSHIT. IF THEY DEFEATED THE EMPIRE ONLY FOR THE FIRST ORDER TO ARRIVE 35 YEARS LATER THEN THIS RUINS THE POINT OF THE ORIGINAL TRILOGY."

Which is kinda ridiculous. Characters dont know the downstream results of their actions 35 years in the future and think "wow, these actions are not going to be relevant 35 years from now, so I guess I should rethink what I'm doing". Imagine the angry Greeks when it was written that Odysseus was a villain figure in the Iliad, but was the hero of the Odyssey. Surely Odysseus never should have been involved in the attack on Troy knowing he was a hero, right?

Some people that the point of these stories isnt to validate the perspective of the viewer at every single point where any 2 viewers may disagree on a design decision. What you want doesn't mean it's what the character wants, and in most cases theres 450 different wants across the next 450 facebook comments.

This is called fanbase entitlement. It's toxic and robs viewers of that which they claim to love.

If people want to tag their childhood as something that JJ Abrams can "rob" them of in 2019, then maybe they should revisit what defined their childhood and/or the level of importance this stuff has on their perspective of it.

Delete the Hog Pit. It'll be fun.

Yeah, I wish people would stop having opinions and just take what they're given and beg for more.

@ZombieGenesis Exactly. You should just go out to the car and wait until everyone else is done and never see a movie ever ever again.

Come on, let's keep this a "passive-aggressive stuff upset moms say when you critique their potato salad" free zone. It's my opinion dont agree? Let's discuss

Sorry for saying something else you don't like. Know what might help? Putting up a list of thoughts and opinions people are allowed to have that don't ruffle the feathers of people like you. It'd make everyone's life a lot easier.

Everyone is welcome to have their opinion. I’m good with that.

That opinion can also be a negative one. That’s cool too. We can’t all like everything. That would defeat the purpose of entrepreneurship.

But in my old age, I have come to embrace the old Southern lady in me that has come to believe with much introspection that little comes from voicing a negative opinion. What’s the point? Do you seek to discourage someone from spending their money on what they might enjoy? Do you feel a surge of joy crapping on someone else’s work?

I will concede there is something amusing in squelching what others enjoy. There is a delight in ridiculing or shaming another for enjoying what you find puerile, tasteless, or, Heaven forbid, Republican. And if that’s what it is about, go for it.

Let’s not pretend it is somehow noble or sacrosanct, this desire to crush what others have probably taken a great deal of time and pain to construct. As someone else wiser than me taught me: let people enjoy what they want.

Sometimes that requires us to withhold our opinion, no matter how correct we may think it to be.

No, it was a discussion. A pretty interesting one. I was having a good time reading people's takes on the new trilogy(even TLJ, a movie I hate). Now, however, people are being told their toxic if they have a certain opinion or having that all too original nugget of wisdom thrown at them "Hey, do it better yourself then." There's a difference between having an opinion and insulting others for having a differing opinion(you're entitled and toxic).

I also don't see criticism as trying to "destroy someone's enjoyment" of something. I thought, for the most part, this thread was fairly respectful of differing opinions(up till the last few posts anyway). Expressing why these new movie don't resonate with you is not entitled or toxic, it's expressing an opinion. Maybe I've glossed over it in my attempt to keep things interesting and fairly positive but I don't think I've seen anyone say "If you enjoyed the Rise of Skywalker than you're having wrong-fun". Again, I'm not saying it hasn't happened but I can't recall any instances of it in this thread off the top of my head. What we have seen, in the past few posts, is that if you critique the series you're an entitled and toxic fan.

Anyway, it was an interesting discussion. Now it's just devolved into typical MUSB BS. A shame.

If you say so. I haven’t seen the movie yet. I can’t intelligently engage in the discussion, even if you can.

And you still can. No one is stopping you but you.

Unrelated to Star Wars I recently watched Stuber and it wasn't that bad. It's a definite popcorn flick but if you like buddy cop movies I think you'll enjoy it.

Well, yes. It's a series about war, told by someone who watched his generation destroyed by the Vietnam War; mostly about a boy who's King Arthur with the serial numbers filed off, and remind me how Arthur's story ends again?

It's always been a bleak series, and I feel like a lot of the backlash to the new trilogy is based on the audience resenting that they now have enough critical thinking skills to recognize the things they weren't savvy enough to notice as kids.

I should note that my previous comment was in no way shaped that I could do better. I just didn't like them. Nor was it looking through nostalgia goggles. My reasons for disliking it was poor writing, disjointed editing, and nonsensical plot.

Also, I just supremely dislike Abrams directing, regardless of what movie it happens to be.

Interesting thought. I'm gonna ponder it.

Personally, I think moviegoers put too much importance on these franchise films, at least enough that the concept of just hanging out, eating some popcorn, and enjoying a movie has become some kind of armchair avant-garde analysis as to whether or not it met their approval, why, and whether or not they would have done what the characters did. Enjoying a movie isnt about whether or not you'd vote for it on The Voice and ride an entire season of esteem on it. It's about being in the moment, being absorbed by the screen, and letting the story get you out of your skin.

And maybe that's part of the problem; people are so focused on their opinions, their standards, their desires, all stuff inside of their own skin that they can't just let things be. "Omg this $10 matinee ticket was a waste of my time and money." and "I waited a whole year since the last time I was disappointed and a year the time before that and the 7 years since Revenge of the Sith that disappointed me and so did Attack of the Clones and Phantom Menace and OMGFUCK JJ Abrams Star Trek arrrrr".

Man, I thought about this new trilogy and asked myself if I would have LOVED IT if I was a kid and it all happened a year or two after Return of the Jedi. More Luke and Chewbacca, Rey, Poe, Finn, more R2D2...I'd have loved it.

And I think it's kinda sad that for some people that magic is gone for them. I hope they can find it again, but here's a secret: No one's ever going to recapture what they loved as a child if they approach it like an adult.
