Good or New Movies Review
-
So for my partner's belated birthday, we went to the movies yesterday and saw Cinderella.
I really liked it. I felt it kept the spirit of the original (including the mice without humanizing them more than their squeaks being able to be interpreted), but added backstory (which it needed). The main actress was pretty and filled the role nicely, the Prince was more than just 'AND I AM THE PRINCE' and Cate Blanchett is fabulous as Lady Tremaine. I was also surprised that Helena Bonham Carter didn't fuck up being the Fairy Godmother. If you like costume porn, this is a movie for costume porn.
Be aware, every outfit Drisella and Anastasia wear will make your eyes bleed, however.

Which is also pretty much canon for the story. XD

It doesn't come out here in England for another week, but I am absolutely dragging my children along to see it. SO ready for this!

@Pondscum
You'll like it a lot. It also reminded me a little of, if you've seen it, Ever After (another Cinderella live-action, with Drew Barrymore). Which was fine, it's one of my favorite movies. -

Often neither good nor new.

Well, do you like looking at Ralph Fiennes naked and Kiera Knightly in period dress?
If so you might like "The Dutchess."

It's a movie from last year but I,Origin seems to be a pretty decent sci-fi-ish story of some kind. A review I read on it wanted to call it a thriller but I hardly believe it fits that category. The movie is well acted and well written and based on an interesting premise. Good for people who like unconventional sci-fi movies I think.

We have no generic 'movies' thread, mind if I leave this here?

For those Hunter S. Thompson fans, you might want to give Inherent Vice a look. It's has a lot of similarities to Fear and Loathing, and is a pretty decent movie to boot.
Zombie fans should check out Stake Land. It has the younger bar brother from Revenge on it, and proof that better writing does help young actors (cause his writers for Revenge were all sorts of meh).
And another out of the way sci-fi movie I found enjoyable is Coherence. It's pretty trippy and based on a great premise. To explain what it is about would give it away though. I'd recommend just watching it cold.

Saw The Babadook the other night. It was pretty good, but it was not as terrifying as I hoped.
-
@Ganymede You could seek out Who Can Kill A Child if The Babadook didn't quite hit the mark.
-
I don't know if it'll be the same. The Babadook has supernatural elements to it, and Who Can Kill a Child seems to be a mundane horror film. Not quite what I'm looking for.
-
Just finished The Babadook. The first third of the movie I wanted the kid to be gone. About halfway through it started to get creepy. Then it kind of fizzled out with a Stephen King ending.

Agreed. I liked the overall story, but that kid grated on me like woah. The ending was aight. I think I'd compare it more to M Night than King though.
-
Just finished John Wick. Not much of a plot but great action, well-acted for an action movie.

That's kind of the point. Kids can be fucking annoying.

I enjoyed John Wick, and I especially enjoyed seeing THeon Greyjoy's actor playing an entitled, snivelling little brat of a Russian mob kid.

This. John Wick is a damn good movie that actually had a lot of proper firearms techniques to it, and lacked a lot of the unnecessary clicking you hear in others.
I uh, did have massive eye malfunctions towards the beginning however. After they were done with wick and he woke up and that trail.....
-
@Templari John Wick FTW, how many head shots were there in that movie? Must be like at least 1 for every dude he killed.

It's the only way to be sure. Aside from orbital strikes.
