I love when I start typing out an email to someone to get their thoughts/input on an issue and as soon as I get into describing it, I figure out how I wanna handle it.

This is why I need a duck.

TMW the boss's boss is hanging out by your cubicles (on a day he intends to send everyone home early) and he's asking why your team lead is late and another guy called out sick.

And you're there because you were wise enough to predict this AND wise enough to go into the office on a day that was gonna be a free half-day.

                Word.

                    @Auspice Right.

Unless I'm travelling I try not to take days off like "Day Before Holiday" because if you think about it: If I requested the day off I'd use 8 hours of vacation, but if I went to work it would be 4 hours of doing Jack Shit and then getting 4 hours of free time off.

I was considering showing up late and turning a 4 hour day into a 3 hour day, but I'm glad I didn't. Our Director (boss's boss) is hanging out with us, looking at his cell while we fuck around on our cell phones too, and the guy that just came in an hour and a half late is getting the whole: "Well hey hey did your car get stuck in the rain?" (translation: You're late. I have made a note of this) treatment.

I'm the only single employee with no kids at my facility so I am usually the one who gets stuck working on holidays. This year they did something different, they asked for a volunteer to work on Christmas Eve. When I didn't immediately volunteer, everyone else in the room turned and looked at me expectantly. Now, I had already resigned myself to working on that day but I was still annoyed. I felt like the poor guy in the cartoon where the commander asks for a volunteer and everyone else takes a step back >.<

On the bright side, it's an easy quiet day at work and I am getting holiday pay for a full day, even though I'll only be working for 6 hours.

I've been there at jobs before. 'Oh you don't have any family so you can work every holiday, work all overtime, wo-'

It's always a shitty gesture, IMO. Yes, I get people wanna be with their family, but assuming the person without has nothing better to do is BS.

When I was younger, I honestly preferred to work than spend time with family. And my friends spent time with theirs.

This year, I watched my kids all day. With two trials coming up in two weeks, I would have preferred work.

...okay? I don't really think this affects my point that most people have families even if they don't consist of the worker's spouse and children, a whole lot of those people actually would also like to be with them on a holiday, and it's kind of messed up to have that routinely dismissed. I'm really tired right now, and may well be missing your point.

(Sorry about the upcoming trial thing, though.)

I don’t really have a point other than some people with families and friends would rather be at work during the holidays.

Don’t mind me, honestly. I dislike the holiday season immensely. All of this cheer and time off makes my blood boil.

@Ganymede That is and has been long among my favorite gifs on the internet, and only now do I realize: I have a cat that looks just like that now, just with a bit more of a profile and a seemingly constant smile. Her favorite thing to utterly disregard is 'my need to sleep', rather than small objects, though. Now I'm wondering if that's the snow weasel's mom. 😐 It would explain a lot about Magical Princess Murderflouf. It certainly is in spirit at least.

If you're one of the folks that'd rather work, all I can suggest is: ask around the office to see if whoever is stuck working wants to swap, if that's allowed/viable. If it can be done, you'll probably make someone's day and they'll be helping you out of the holiday stuff you'd prefer to avoid.

                                    Oh fucking well.

                                      I don’t really need to ask. I’m a partner. I do what I want.

But I am beholden to a partner in life, and she demands that I spend some time with our brood.

I do love my brood and my partner, but the former need discipline and the latter disappointment.

I get to go to work tomorrow, though, so not all is lost.
