Good TV

@Selira It's human nature. Give us a thing and if we can't eat it eventually we'll try to fuck it.

Another first for me lately, here is a Netflix series I recommend: Jinn
Only two episodes in but its great so far. Sad about the backlash its receiving. I've said way back and talked with folks about a non-western dark urban fantasy would be good (cause I'm over vampires, wolves, fey). This is pretty spot on (this or Halfworlds). Also, I'm sure the producers had a tight budget, good thing they're FX gurus, and the acting is pretty damn good considering the actors never acted before, they showed up with enthusiasm when the producers were casting locally.
No spoilers, I can't binge watch, I'm only 2 episodes in (of only 5).

Fun Fact: New Pro-Wrestling show AEW (All Elite Wrestling) is going to be trying to take on the WWE and will soon have a weekly 2 hour show on TNT Network.
More Interesting Fact: AEW has signed a trans wrestler (Nyla Rose, who transitioned to female and is in the women's division) and an openly gay wrestler (Sonny Kiss, the Concrete Rose).
I would have posted this in the Wrasslin' thread but I thought some of you might find it neat that a major pro wrestling program owned by a Pakistani-American billionaire family is giving a fair nod to trans wrestlers.

@Ghost I am not a wrestling fan, but I've heard some shit about WWE (Last Week Tonight did a pretty good segment on it) - and also, apparently no few of the wrestlers are less than thrilled about performing in Saudi Arabia?
-
@Cupcake Yeah, WWE is taking a huge paycheck from Saudi Arabia, but female wrestlers are barred from being on the show at all (can't have them sexy, strong, athletic women on display!). So WWE was willing to take cash for a show that discriminates against the women of WWE, who have worked so hard to get where they are.
Also, I wanted to note that on first glance Sonny Kiss may be assumed to be a gimmick. Sonny is a "loud and proud" character, but it's not a caricature. From what I've seen (Instagram, interviews) that's
who Sonny Kiss is in real life: openly out, proud of his culture, doesnt give a fuck and wants to wrestle. I love him. YouTube interview with SonnyHe's also been open about his relationship with indie wrestler Killian McMurphy.
dawwwwwwwCuteCoupleAEW is absolutely gonna kill WWE.
- Support for women and LGBTQ+ Culture
- Unlike WWE, all employees are employees with salaries and health insurance
- The more WWE does stuff like Saudi Arabia or fucks over a wrestler unfairly, AEW looks better.
A number of WWE wrestlers have defected, and there are rumors that a lot more are looking into getting out of their contracts to jump ship to AEW.

@Ghost The LGBT-friendliness won't fly with some of WWE's core MAGA demographic, though.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is now on Netflix, redubbed and without licensing for "Fly Me to the Moon" (either as its ending theme or in the places it appears as an instrumental for BG music), and I am having feelings.
-
@Roz No spoilers, if you could? I know it's an older anime and I'm probably THE person who hasn't seen it, but ever since ADV went under and the DVDs are now either import-only or out of print (either way, $200+), I'm actually going to be seeing it for the first time this month
-
@Ghost I will refrain from spoilers! I think I had two different DVD sets for this at different points, along with VHS for the whole original dub. I wonder if my DVDs still exist. They'd probably be at my parents' house, lol. Apparently they'd be worth a pretty penny now? I didn't even realize until this week. But it was pretty much my favorite anime growing up.
-
Which of the like eighty billion versions is it? I've also not seen it and intend to.
-
@Rinel There aren't really that many versions? There IS a Director's Cut of the last several eps, and I'm not sure if Netflix is including those scenes or not. But it's the 26-episode run of the series and then I THINK the Death and Rebirth and End of Evangelion movies. It's a brand new dubbing of all of it, which is WEIRD for me just because I watched the original US dub so many times and those voices are embedded in my SOUL.
-
I've only seen one of the movies and it's been so very long since I watched the series. I might need to check this out.
(Though I only ever watched subs so... it'll be weird for that reason for me) -
@Auspice You can still watched it subbed on Netflix.

Oh! Good.
I like watching anime subbed for a couple reasons. I like seeing it as-it-was-meant-to-be and it also helps me not completely lose what Japanese I do know (I find whenever I watch an anime subbed, after a few episodes I stop relying on the subs as much. I still need them at times / to supplement, but it's kind of enjoyable to go 'okay I seem to know this language more than I thought I did' ....... also proves that immersion does totally work?) -

Does the subtitled version still have Fly Me to the Moon?
(Also, the sub is best anyway. And the Japanese version of the opening theme is something I will still remember when I am old and senile and cannot even recall my own name; it got that deeply ingrained in my brain.)
Zankoku na tenshi no you ni, shounen yo shinwa ni nare! [instrumental intro] Aoi kaze ga ima, mune no DOA o tataite mo. Watashi dake o tada mitsumete hohoenderu anata...

Nope. Apparently the Netflix Japan version has it, but not the subtitled version in the US. It's clearly a licensing/copyright issue.

There's no English version of the opening theme!

Never seen Evangelion either. To the point where the name of one of my chatgroups with RL friends is Coin!Evangelion. XD
We did say I'd finally watch it with them when it was on Netflix...

It's a modern creation from a few years back, so far as I know, but I did sort of half expect Netflix to license it for a new dubbed version. And while I prefer the original Japanese version, I am very impressed with how much of the original lyrics' meaning was preserved in this.
Like an angel with cruel and merciless intent / Go forth, young boy / And you'll become a legend! [instrumental opening] In time, this blue of the sky Will reach out to knock on the door to your heart...
