@cupcake I kept liking what I saw, but the 'Hurdy Gurdy Man' theme broke it somehow for me in a really jarring way. Lyrics make sense, but stylistically it just broke the headspace in a way that was... weird. It was jarring enough it'd knock what I'd just seen out of my head and break any and all coherence in a way no musical selection ever has in TV or a movie before.

I need to try again and just make a point of speeding through that bit, I think.

      Oh fucking well.

@surreality I agree about the theme song. The lyrics are fine, but the style of the song is super jarring.

Otherwise, the show (only 1 episode in as we watched it before bedtime last night) seems pretty intriguing.

@surreality Interestingly, there's an interview floating somewhere out there on the intarwebz with the creator talking about why they chose that song and style, in as much as the show puts a heavy emphasis on the mysticism and power of the druids, I don't see how skipping the intro will rob you of anything, but I might propose that as you watch the season, its use might make more sense?

@cupcake Lyrics make sense. I totally get why they made the choice. Conceptually, it's a great fit. Musical style is jarring as heck, though, even though I absolutely see why they'd connect the references.

It's one of those 'idea: A+++', 'actual output: D-' problems, minor as it is.

              Oh fucking well.

I'm doing a re-watch of Warehouse 13, but it's not free on Amazon anymore. IMO it's legit worth the $ if you do that (or the piracy if you risk that) though, because even when it's like 😧 😧 😧 OH NO 😧 it will NOT leave you fucked over and wishing you were dead. Episodic with serial elements rather than straight-up serial, lovable characters, adventure/comedy/drama, Weird Shit.

What IS up on Prime right now: Andromeda (yes the Kevin Sorbo SF series from 2000), all of New Doctor Who, Batman: The Animated Series (yes the early 90s one), more Star Trek than you can shake a stick at, Endeavour (period detective show that's a prequel to an old detective show, and it's actually lovely, I watched it with my mom). If you want to twitch for reasons totally unrelated to downers, they actually stuck goddamn Young Indiana Jones up there.

                  NETFLIX:
Altered Carbon is, somehow, as goddamn good as the books, and is WEIRD but I wouldn't call it a downer.

The Worst Witch is fucking adorable, and Galavant is dumb but funny. Arrow, Supergirl, and Flash are all up there, and if you're in the mood for soap opera superheroes, they're good go-tos for it, without all the kick-the-puppy-then-skullfuck-it that seems to be popular lately.

I wish I could stay awake during Altered Carbon. What I've seen of it is awesome, but something about the show is set to stun. I make it like 10 minutes in and bam.

                    Back to Spooks, i guess.

So, to follow on from Altered Carbon being turned into a TV show?

Apparently Amazon is going to try turning Consider Phlebas into a show. I can only imagine the brain melting degree of budget that would be required to pull it off but am intrigued as to the result.

Amazon is throwing billions, with a b, into its video. It will have a pretty ridiculous budget.

For example, the amazon LotR show has a guaranteed budget of $100 - $150 million per season as part of the agreement they made with the tolkien estate for the rights.

We already were in the golden age of television, and then Netflix threw a ton of money into the mix to up the ante... which is causing others to do the same.

What I hope for is that the market doesn't eventually crash. We really don't know yet (there's no way to tell since this is all so new) if these streaming service behemoths will make their investments back in the long term.

Going to say, Season 2 Jessica Jones really hit some great marks with their soundtracks and music composition. Much better than Season 1 I think.

I found Season 2 of Jessica Jones to be weaker than Season 1. Aside from Hogarth's story arc. That was a really, really strong arc.

I really enjoyed Season 2 of Jessica Jones. It's not as strong as Season 1 but I think that's mostly because of expectations (we had much less informed expectations for S1, and we had a LOT of expectations for S2 based on S1).

I still really, REALLY liked it. It has a tight theme across all the arcs, excellent music, excellent directing, and the acting is superb. Even if I did see the big twist coming.

I also did not find S2 of JJ as good as S1 but it definitely felt as if Ritter was more settled into the character this season. Her acting this season was better than 1.

The main story for S2 I found lackluster I think because I felt that all of the supporting characters had much more interesting stories going on than Jessica's own primary story.

Late to the boat here, but I'm finally watching Season 1 of Jessica Jones. I've avoided it because of my general distaste for the superhero genre, but this is good! It's nicely gritty and the use of powers seem to be nicely muted and the threats seem to actually be threatening. Overall, I'm digging the whole film noir vibe.

Now, if only Jessica could stop using her powers whenever she gets angry. It looks so fake and is so ridiculous, it just pulls me out of it ever time.

Saw the debut trailer for Netflix's take on Lost in Space. It looks like it might be a pretty good reboot of the series.

You might want to check out Luke Cage as well. It's very much along the same lines as far as the 'street level hero' and 'muted use of powers'.
