Christmas hasn't really been my thing in a long, long time.

Hell, holidays haven't. I pretty much liked Thanksgiving because of the food, but only got to partake every few years over the past decade-and-change due to working in places like call centers where the public expects you there every single day of the year.

But this year, I'm having a good holiday. And I'm most looking forward to Friday. I'm going into DC to see the national tree (despite growing up in the area, I never actually did so) and to visit the Air and Space Museum for the first time in about 13 years.

2016 may have been an incredibly rough year (personally, as well as everything else), but it's definitely ending on a high note.

Today I stopped by my mother's to pick up mail-order I had shipped to her considerably less ghetto home. I brought Arby's (because we like them) and I helped her make her absolutely fantastic Million Dollar Fudge, which is so rich I need about a half glass of milk per square inch. It was unexpected, and I haven't felt more "home" in a decade.

Introducing my teens to Ferris Bueller. They love it, Eldest even put down her phone to chortle out loud and pay full attention (big deal at 15!).

When he was six, I bought a microscope for my son because he was so fascinated by my magnifying glasses. (Fascinated to the point of trying to work out how to use two of them together…) He loved it. For at least three months he pulled the thing out daily to see things up close. It's a pretty low-grade microscope but he loves it anyway. Even now, three years later (almost to the day--I got him his microscope for his birthday) he still occasionally pulls it out to peek at things. Say once or twice a month.

But…

First, it's a pretty crappy microscope all things considered. Sure it does the job, but it doesn't do it particularly well. And then on top of everything else it has all the usual issues of microscopy: setting up slides, for example, and having no real ability to take it out to where the interesting things are.

This birthday this will all change. There's a new microscope in town, and this new one is a portable, digital microscope with its own screen. It can be used standalone, snapping pictures or taking video of what it sees. It can be plugged into a computer via USB and then used with any USB camera or video software (including software that comes bundled with it). It can also be plugged into a television for live display.

I'm pretty sure my son is going to shit.

My co-worker is playing Dean Martin recordings. I've joined in on "Volare" and "That's Amore" already and she (a woman in her sixties) seems to be completely flabberghasted at the fact that someone in his thirties knows these songs.

Maybe I shouldn't short-circuit her with the fact that I can sing hits as far back as the 1910s and 20s - anyone up for “Five Foot Two, Eyes Of Blue?” or maybe “Lily Marlene?”

MUSH/RL friend of mine was given a gift of Uncle Joe's Mint Balls by our pal in from the UK. Unfortunately he forgot them at our mutual friends' house. We work in the same place, so I just got to walk over to his desk over on his side of the building and announce, "Hey man, you forgot your balls at S&K's place. If you want your balls, you're going to have to talk to N. So just remember to go get your balls, okay?"

As expected, the co-workers around him started cracking up.
