@Ninjakitten I know, right? That is classic. That's CLASSIC board lore. Anyone who missed it from previous boards should be required to read it as initiation: if you can survive this, you'll do just fine.

                Oh fucking well.

When your office announces that they'll be having a Mardi Gras party at work that includes tossing beads from the 2nd floor down to people in the lobby...

Corporate train wreck waiting to happen.

                  Will I participate? FUCK NO
                  Will I witness? YEP.

Worked my first whole week at a new job that doesn't make me wanna gouge my eyes out. Also, from my desk I can see the little fortress of web dev on the horizon and I think -- soon. Not today, but soon. For now? Head down, nose clean, eyes straight and workworkwork and practice practice practice.

I am travelling with work right now and instead of putting my kittens into a cattery I am paying somebody to come and look after them in my house. It worked out about the same expense wise (well, I guess more because they are still eating their regular food on top) but hopefully avoids traumatising them too much.

The thing I love though? She is sending me an update email after each visit, this is the longest I have ever left them alone and it is so reassuring to know they are okay and getting less shy, even if they are apparently still hiding behind furniture once they realise the door opening is not me coming home.

@mietze I just went through this myself. In the last year I have found both my biological father and my biological mother.

My biological father didn't know I existed, and was really happy to find out about me (as was his wife and other children).

My biological mother seemed excited at first when I contacted her, but more recent attempts to try to connect seem to be met with less than enthusiastic reception. I was hoping that I might get to develop a relationship with her since my Mom (the only one I knew about till recently) just passed a few months ago.

Both of them live within 30 miles of each other. One of these days I am planning on heading out to Oklahoma to meet them in person (or at least my bio-dad who really seems receptive to the idea).

                          Good luck to you!

@Alamias God above, that is good to hear and I hope things go well. This is such a great thing, and puts the biggest smile on my face.

@Saulot Thanks! It was really all my wife's doing. I never really thought about looking for them but she is a historian and the mystery was too much for her to ignore. 24&me and Ancestry were obtained, and about 3 weeks after I got my results my father's sister did a test that sent up a flag. My wife contacted her, and then from there found everyone else.

It's all still pretty new to me, and a bit awkward since I am introverted as it is. Talking to 'family' that I don't know is a little weird. But bio-dad is very receptive so that makes things easier. Bio-mom is not as 'chatty' with me, sadly. I have tried reaching out a few times since the initial phone call with her (where she seemed receptive), but I don't get much back. Ah well.

While being so exhausted with work and school to even bother logging in to RP is sort of bad, it's the best kind of tired. The tired of being busy. Although I do miss indulging in my hobby. I suppose balance will be reached. At some point.

I bought my first pair of fat pants recently and holy cow how did I ever live without them before? They look like -jeans- but don't make me injure myself every time I sit down! Fantastico.

A friend of mine has had a super shitty six months and today was his 50th birthday.

I got to turn me yelling at him about how he's not buying his own birthday cake and to stop it and let his friends love on him instead of worrying about "putting anyone out" into a hilarious little production involving three other friends. One quite literally trumpeted in the arrival of his cake that another carried, while a third recited the absurd and pun-filled "quest" that I went on from bakery to bakery to hunt down the particular flavor he wanted while all the locals were panicking about some especially miserable incoming winter weather.

In a room full of SCAdians, relating the tale of how "I braved the Doom-Singers of the Snowstorms of 2019, defeated the Hoarding Hounds they have unleashed upon the land to scavenge every bit of its 'bread' and 'eggs', and navigated the labyrinthine Maze of Minivans to deliver to my lord and Baron his carrot cake" reduced everyone to giggle fits.

He was all smiles and delight. I am smugly pleased. ^_^

So, when I was a teenager, I always carried a deck of cards everywhere. I taught myself a number of little tricks (only one 'magic' trick, but mostly just what is termed as 'cardistry') since... y'know, pre-YouTube days.

This turned into collecting decks of cards. I have probably... 80? or so decks now. Vintage decks, decks from places I've visited, decks from places other people have visited and sent me, etc etc.

Recently, I've gotten back into trying to do things with them and I've been actually learning shit. This began with buying a bunch of cheap Bicycle decks, but I finally went and bought an actual nice deck of cards and on top of these things being just downright gorgeous (theory11's Monarchs), they handle just... so much better. I'm able to do some moves and all that I'd been struggling with on the much more slippery bikes.

It's just fun to be learning (or re-learning?) a new skill/hobby and also to have that moment of 'Oh, shit... the things I were struggling with were partly due to the tool, not me.'

ETA: for anyone else who loves playing cards, theory11 produces a ton. The Monarchs are just their signature deck. But... they have a deck they produced with NPH that is also a puzzle. I have it on order because HOW COULD I NOT

Whoever talked about Hozier in a thread recently (I think it might be the one about sounds that make you think of your character?) - reminded me to pick up the new album. I'm not even through the first listen, and already in love with it. So thanks!
