I used to have people page me out of the blue and ask if they could masturbate for me on Skype on my Reno staff login, no joke. I was in a whole world of: "I don't know you from a hole in the ground and just did an app for you, I... where is this even coming from?!" (Even my chars were a bitchy artist and a dorky folklorist, so it's not like I had a pile of TS-bait chars or something to suggest that's what I was there for.)
In my heart of hearts I want to believe they were immediately site banned. I want to believe. I really do. I don't get how behavior that if someone did that to a clerk in a gaming store would likely get their ass kicked becomes 'well, shrug it off, the creeper will go away on their own. What can you do, the internet amirite' in a MU.
My response was totally sincere:
"Was that a mispage?"
When the answer was 'no', I just... guys, seriously, take the opening to save face, at least, I mean come on, now.

Not trying to stir anything up, just a rant...
I cannot understand why some people do not see the substantial and important difference between the challenges faced by lbgt* people in north America (legal rights, etc), and them being THROWN FROM ROOFS in Muslim countries.
I got into an argument about this, and she just would. Not. Admit that there isn't an lbgt person in the world who would choose to risk being thrown from a roof over maybe not being able to get married or whatever...
It's not to minimise anything people experience, but in straight comparison, it's no comparison.
-
@dontpanda I suppose it's because both are important, but we can do more about smaller - but still important - things around us than much more critical things halfway across the globe.
For example when I first moved to Canada the concerns here over how animals are treated seemed less warranted than in southern Europe; sure, people don't always spay their pets so that many end up having to be euthanized in shelters to make room for others but compared to having thousands of strays around with literally no one looking after them, often starving to death or getting hit by cars it's a lesser problem, right? ... but not so to that little mutt in the shelter right now. The one I can go adopt right now and whose life literally save - I can't do anything about thousands of others across the ocean but I can rescue this one.
The same thing applies to all kinds of human rights violations. Obviously in the western world things are better but they weren't always better; people had to struggle, fight and not give up to bring them to the point they are now. It's not like because we generally treat each other better than throwing them off roofs it's time to say 'mission accomplished' and sit back - we're still shitty people and we'll do shitty things if left to our own devices or stop being outraged by the fact.
The scale might change but the shit still smells the same, you know what I mean?
-
@Arkandel Oh, sure. I get that, and I wasn't even arguing that LGBT people should just be glad they're not getting murdered. I was super clear about that matter, too. But this person just would not understand that her saying it was just as bad for LGBT to not have legal rights as it is to get killed for being gay/etc was not only wrong but wildly so.

Dear asshole co-worker,
The very least you could do when I am pulled off my job so that you can take a 15 minute break from the reception desk is say "thank you". And when you decide at the ass end of your break to strike up a conversation with the HR rep and thus wind up with a 20 minute break - right in front of me where I can see you - is apologize. I realize you want to focus on work and not excessively socialize, but some common fucking courtesy is in order.

This patient basically has been horrible to everyone, and she tried to berate me for not calling her back to keep her up to date on the state of her account... um. No, bitch, it's YOUR account. I have you and hundreds of other patients calling every day. Your account is your responsibility. If I were responsible for babysitting every account on file, I wouldn't even have time to do my actual duties.
Thank goodness my boss came down and put the fear of the spaghetti monster in her.
-
@dontpanda It's kind of an asshole argument, though. Like if your friend is complaining they stubbed their toe and you just keep interrupting them with "But it could be worse - you could have gotten your leg torn off in a thresher accident."
You're not wrong, you're just tone deaf.
-
@Kanye-Qwest Other way around, actually. I made a comment to someone else and she interjected.
So, "It's awful that people lose their legs in thresher accidents," is replied to with, "Don't you realise people still stub their toes?"

Just found out today that my coworker (and the only other person who can do our job that requires 7-days-a-week coverage) is going on vacation for a week and a half.
So I lose my days off for a week.
The only upside is that since the parent company won't approve overtime, hours on my other project (which has been stressing me out so bad I have had crying fits in the middle of the day) have to be cut to accommodate... and this one pays more.
But this is not the time for me to not have days off.

Heat rash under a breast. Just one though.

I just read something that is pretty personally horrible.
"Java is everywhere. On your phone, in your computer, on your Blu-Ray player, even in your car!"
I won't be able to sleep well tonight.
Follow-Up:
The Chrome browser does not support NPAPI plug-ins and therefore will not run all Java content. Switch to a different browser (Firefox, Internet Explorer or Safari on Mac) to run the Java plug-in.
Okay, let's try this, then:
In Windows 10, the Edge browser does not support plug-ins and therefore will not run Java. Switch to a different browser (Firefox or Internet Explorer 11) to run the Java plug-in. Select the More Actions option located at the top right of the Edge browser and click on Open with Internet Explorer.
Oh, phew, okay, I'll sleep easier.

@dontpanda The thing is, in many places in the US, LGBTQ people do have to worry about violence and being killed. We had a Q&A with a gay guy who came in to our Human Sexuality class who told us of at least one time he went to a bar, left and got followed by a bunch of guys wanting to play 'Stomp the Faggot'. The cops just kinda shrugged at him.
This is without even getting into trans* folks who don't disclose or do disclose and get promptly beaten or murdered.
-
@silentsophia I keep leaving out details for brevity's sake, which obscures clarity.
One key difference my conversation tried to illuminate was that in the US, the state doesn't sanction or tolerate violence against specific groups. In Muslim countries, the state absolutely does.
-
@dontpanda I think you'd be surprised how apathetic some cops and such are, and even political entities passing laws to screw over LGBTQ people.
But I understand your meaning. It's just things are kinda shitty for LGBTQ peeps all over.

Insomnia.
Fucking. Insomnia.
Lie down a bit before midnight. Toss and turn. Stare into the darkness. Try every trick I know to SLEEP.
When I finally looked at my phone, I'll be honest. I thought it'd be maybe 12:30 and it was just my hyperactive brain making me think I couldn't sleep.
Nope. 2:30am. Spent over two and a half hours. Which means I've hit the mark of 'get up, do something else for a bit, then try again.' Except I don't want to do anything else. I JUST WANT TO SLEEP.

@Auspice Time for that random road tour of Pennsylvania, I guess.

You don't take a random road tour of Pennsylvania; all such journeys are like walking across the River Styx, and thus always purposeful.
