There are going to be a lot of positions as teachers open at the end of this. We have assembled a REALLY good staff over the last two years. We only had a single new hire which is almost unheard of in urban districts.

I wouldn't be surprised if a bunch of us left though

Been getting a lot of "let's take a moment to all be so grateful we have jobs" shit in the morning huddle at work as more and more cross selling pressure is being put on to increase the amount of consumer credit/debt offered to "help" our clients at the same time. No irony there at all. They scrapped all bonuses for last year, it seems unlikely that when the second-ish wave hits we will get hazard pay, and now for every writeup they changed the contract where they can dock a huge percentage of your pay. Some of us think they don't want to (or can't perhaps, depending on what aid they may or may not be getting from the feds) lay off people honestly, and are just trying to get people to quit.

Finally I had to tell my (brand new) manager privately that the phrasing was making me pretty uncomfortable, as it was taking on almost a spiritual overtone. There's even awkward moments of silence after he asks us to reflect in gratitude. I told him that honestly, I'm an asset to his team, though I was aware that I could be replaced quickly to have a warm body in there but the knowledge drain and actual help that they rely on would take more time to replace. That there is a reason that I am here rather than overseeing my kids' online learning, (which I would prefer to do rather because for one of my kids it's a shitshow, and they need more support right now) but most importantly I was an intelligent adult who was more than capable of understanding and choosing what was best for my family and so long as I was employed there he could be assured that not only was I choosing to be there giving no less than my best work, but that I was there to get my contracted benefits that were what appealed to me in the first place, if there were any issues with my teamwork or how much I stepped up in the office then I am always open to personal feedback, in addition to going over our numbers as a team daily (totally appropriate).

He actually took it really well, acknowledge this hokey ass shit was stuff kind of being soft-pushed by one of the regional people and was off script from the official organization stuff, and has not done it since.

But I have seen a LOT (and heard a lot) of customer-facing people being shoveled this "YOU SHOULD BE GRATEFUL" shit. Rings kinda hollow when you're at the stage most of us are having worked right out there in the community this whole time while the people pushing it (and making their poor managers feed this line of bullshit to their tired staff) are working from home.

The guy two houses up the street from me has been out on his front porch using power tools, including a saw and some kind of grinder, in intermittent bursts since before 5PM. It's now 10:30PM and the noise ordinance for our neighborhood, which tends to echo sound a whole lot because of rowhome construction and the way our streets are laid out, kicked in two and a half hours ago.

As someone with C-PTSD, let me tell you how fucking awesome it's been to sit here anticipating random bursts of loud, horrible noises every few minutes for the last five and a half hours.

My face literally hurts from how hard I've been unconsciously clenching my jaw.

This is how people snap, dude.

Complex. Usually indicates PTSD that brings about or worsens other mental conditions.

ETA: C-PTSD usually occurs from repeated or prolonged trauma, rather than the 'simple' PTSD that can occur from a single traumatic event.

Your situation is why there are noise ordinances. I would use it.

Unfortunately, noise complaints in Philadelphia go through the police department which a) usually has better things to do and b) I try to avoid calling on my neighbors whenever possible, given that I live in a mostly black neighborhood. The few times I have called, it was for a break-in , a DV call involving kids, or the annual summer game of "Gunshots or fireworks?", which I feel are all dangerous enough to warrant the risk of the police interacting with POC.

....Which is ironic considering that some of my neighbors will cheerfully call L&I on us for any reason they can think of, like the time we had materials from a renovation on our porch for two days. (Super appreciate the $375 fine for "dumping", assholes. Really. You couldn't just knock on the fucking door and ask us what's up?)

I'm probably going to call the neighborhood watch captains if it happens again and start there because even with how many of my neighbors are also police officers, calling them first about shady but not imminently dangerous shit is kind of the norm around here.

I appreciate the thought and sentiment, but I frankly have little sympathy for people willing to do harm to others.

And, yes: using a jackhammer after hours could do harm because you don't know which of your neighbors has PTSD or has to work a double third-to-first shift at a hospital.

All it takes is one selfish motherfucker to ruin the good vibes in a community.

Some municipalities are stupid about this sort of thing.

My mom once got fined for an 'unkempt yard' because the flowers around the mailbox weren't currently in bloom. Because a neighbor kept filing complaints.

Chucklefucks who've never done an ounce of research into any of the myriad scientific and medical disciplines surrounding transgender reality but who do vaguely remember Mrs. Terwilliger mentioning X and Y chromosomes back in seventh grade so they're pretty damn sure they understand the situation better than actual doctors and scientists.

It's NOT better for some kids to be at home and we're not making a fucking ounce of accommodation for those kids.

@silverfox My son is high-functioning, so he was deemed 'okay' to be kept in remote learning. Great. Except the reason they put him in classes with additional teachers is because he is unable to self-focus. So there was always someone to help steer him back on track when he started to drift. Only now, there's noone to pull him out of the drift. I'm working all day, there's no other parent in the household.

So now he's failing many of his classes and his teachers keep wanting to text and email me during the day, regardless of how many times I've told them I work 10 hour days and can only really respond on Thursdays (day off), telling me how many assignments he hasn't turned in while I sit here and go "Well no shit! Look at his IEP where he needs someone to help physically redirect him back on task!"

It is legit! My school is TECHNICALLY in line with the law. We rewrote all the IEPs with an eye to services we could provide if we went remote. Parents agreed and signed.

                                            But fuck.

They still needed those other services.
