I hear that they're showing promise this year.

I can't keep up the pretense. What the Buckeyes do for me is increase the excitement around the place and fuck up traffic. I subscribe to an OSU Football Home Games calendar just so I know if I have to leave for work a half hour early on game days.

@Ghost One of my saddest realisations I never seem to see coming ahead of time is when people I consider 'good friends' turn out to be 'good specific activity buddies' instead when I socialize with them out of context.

Once the realization sinks in that absent of the subject matter we usually talk about there really isn't that much we can talk about it's just downhill from there. And it's weird because in many cases I was having a blast with such folks, we're having fun... but once we take a step back and away from that comfortable bubble of familiar material it gets kinda awkward.

Or, worse, as you mention... the conversation just circles right back to the usual stuff. In your case it's LARP but I've seen it go to WoW or basketball in my circles, and it'd be nice to have more friendships transcending hobbies.

        ... The money-borrowing parts though were a big no-no.

All this also reminds me of how alien it can feel to be interested in a particular subset of a culture (kwhich only get more and more specific, for example: Geek Culture > Roleplaying Games > Tabletop Roleplay > Online Roleplay > MUing). If you're two steps further in than the person you're talking with, it can be a completely incongruous conversation. Applying MU concepts with my friends who only ever got as "deep" down the proverbial Rabbit Hole as Tabletop Roleplay can be an exercise in misunderstandings; long, drawn out explanations; and awkward, anticlimactic ends to conversations because... you're just not on the same page. You're not even on the same book, even if it's maybe the same series.

          Super great analogy, mine. Yup.

@Coin I catch myself wanting to be an elitist asshole a lot of the time. For example I'm on a FB D&D group where people ask questions like "should an $alignment druid do <X>?" and I find myself inclined to go into tirades about how characters aren't just cardboard copies of each other pigeonholed by alignment and... argh, that's not constructive. I mean it could be but not in the semi-dismissive way I'd be phrasing it after years of delving deeper into concepts and themes in MU*-dom.

Worse, this same principle applies to how casually (or not) we delve into our hobbies. The same conversation about WoW is completely different from the perspective of a hardcore raider who's on the cutting, bleeding edge to milk that extra 2% out of his efficiency, and the guy who doesn't remember the name of that instance with the worm boss who sucks you in after it's defeated. Open condescension often ensues, especially if the conversation is online (we're all such badasses when we're not face to face), and that's for fans of the exact same game.

Of course not, but I live in Ohio, where, despite there being several other Div. I schools, everyone roots for the fucking Buckeyes, regardless of where they went. To me, that's a special kind of stupid.

At least where I live, most people are Dayton Flyers fans. Dayton's been a far better team than Ohio State in NCAA Basketball the past few years, but will likely slide back to anonymity now that Archie Miller's at Indiana.

Oh I am quite acquainted with it and they are a special kind of stupid. I got stuck trying to get to a Half-Price near downtown just after a game let out and people kept wanting to run in front of the van I was driving at the time. I had so much road rage.

Columbus in general blows for traffic. Having a river dividing your downtown in two, with few bridges, is exhausting. The infrastructure is fucking old and needs to be replaced I'M LOOKING AT YOU I-70 / I-71 INTERCHANGES FUCK YOU.

The last time I was in Columbus, the GPS got stuck in a circle-loop because of construction and weird streets. I thought Lexington KY was bad with 'one way this way, one way that way' every other street downtown, and weird places with circle medians and weird merging/yielding rules. But I wouldn't wish the traffic in town after or before a UK Basketball game on anyone. Whoo boy.

To add to your horror: Those are the updated interchanges.

Going east/west in this city involves insider knowledge. Pittsburgh seems to know how to do bridges just fine tho. Why can't we?

Oh yeah, because voluntary opt-in information for a small insurance company rating web site is going to give the most accurate information. Hold on, let me roll my eyes a bit.

A lot of my co-workers are lovely, friendly people with interesting lives and I'm perfectly happy to have them friended on Facebook. There are people I don't friend, mainly because I'm petty sure that proof of their dumbassery is not going to improve my impression o f them.

Discovering that at least one of my co-workers is a pro-Trump, anti-immigration, men's rights activist means I'm not even sure I'm going to be able to look at him, much less talk to him.
