@thenomain It's degrees though, and it's about showing mindfulness and courtesy when voicing disagreements. Like for example, we all know these are not the same:
- "I disagree with the implementation of this code, I think it is inelegant"
- "This code is total fucking dogshit. The coder who made it should quit and never do anything again, this is fucking hilariously terrible."
- "I admire many aspects about the coder's intentions, but I ultimately think this is a flawed approach, ehre's why:"
I think #2 absolutely deserves someone to be a dick back. Sure, you could argue their opinion is valid, but they have done nothing to warrant it being taken seriously.

And I think it's just making it into a bar-fight. There are people who can do it well, but they know what they're doing and are the exception that proves the rule. Otherwise, you risk escalation and you cannot take the moral high-ground; you've lowered yourselves to their level with the excuse of "they started it". (Which was never an excuse when I was growing up. Maybe things have changed.)
The #2 anti-trolling technique (after ignoring them) is to respond to them with honesty and logic. While I think we over-use the term "troll", it does bear looking into. A true troll will respond with more, while people who aren't really trolling (knee-jerk reactions, e.g.) will start to act in kind.
So yes, if we can stop escalation, all's the better. If not? Sure, let's bring out the big guns.

important edit:
I agree with "it's degrees", but I don't think the first response to defending oneself should be to make a sick burn. It should be "does this need defending?"
The second should be: "How is the best way to defend this?"
I cannot think of any situation where "with being a dick" is a good answer. A fun answer, sure, but not if your goal is solving the problem.

I feel like I missed something.

I feel like I missed something.
This is usual where I'm involved. I do sincerely apologize to the entire world that my communications aren't better.
Let's just say that I'm angry at the current state of American Politics and how that's sometimes reflected on these boards. I really do think people are better than that, and I'm constantly let down. Why can't people try to be better, even in the face of people who don't?
Adulting is hard.

RL Anger: when I put on a skirt and a nice top, some lipstick and mascara and I get "Ooh what's his name?"
When did it become the law that you have to dress up for anyone other than yourself? Fuck you mom.

@vulgarkitten "His name is Thanos, the Mad Titan".

Answer:
"Her name, mom, what's her name." -
RL anger: When I thank someone and their response is "NP." and my brain, after years of conditioning, reflexively thinks 'No thanks,' hearkening back to the days when NP stood for Noble Privilege and we all thought this was hilarious. It's 2018, I'm allowed to be angry this is still happening in my head, right?

If you're gonna commit suicide, maybe don't do it in a way that kills other people in the process.
Fuck him.
-
@auspice Or in a way that intentionally traumatises innocent people, like the frequent occurrence of people jumping in front of trains.

And now this. Twitch is trying to pull down the clips as fast as they can. But just... I hate people right now.
Shot heard, camera faded before, but apparently could see a laser going over heads right before.

The podcast was awful.

@vulgarkitten I can imagine, CNN just played a clip. Couldn't see anything, but.... yeah.
ETA: LA Times is reporting the shooter was someone in the tournament who had lost.Removing the LA Times bit because no one else is reporting it, and the source apparently doesn't to talk to the press.

This is so horrible.

And Jacksonville is where we'll be moving. Ugh. Can we just not, thanks?
-
It's a bit surreal when it happens someplace you live...and it's the second shooting of the weekend, too. There was a shooting after a HS football game on Friday

My arm is bleeding, I can't use said arm to lift anything, I lost my license somewhere in the course of my day (that's 65 bucks if it doesn't turn up), and my roommate is being all passive aggressive and pouty when I try to explain to him I need to make sure I have the money to get a new license if it doesn't turn up in a day or two, and that if it turns up, I will take him out to dinner for his birthday, or I will take him out on my next paycheck.
The place he wants to go is opening tonight, and you never go opening night anyhow! But no, he'll stomp up the stairs and pout.
(the bleeding from donating blood finally stopped. He's still being pouty and whiny.)
Just like seriously... fuck that.
