      @tek yes. Words have meaning.

      a·buse
      verb
      əˈbyo͞oz/
      1.
use (something) to bad effect or for a bad purpose; misuse.
"the judge abused his power by imposing the fines"
      synonyms: misuse, misapply, misemploy; More

Don't call me condescending when you're being hostile and nitpicking my words to employ some kind of flamethrower assumption. That's fucked up.

@tek I think that inviting other players to unwittingly play support cast to your personal PC-driven adventure is abusive to the players, yes.

As someone who was beaten, molested and medicated for illnesses I didn't have as punishment from the ages of six to eighteen, you're full of hyperbolic shit.

I did, and I'm done backpedalling around your shock and awe angle.

No one was talking about molestation, domestic abuse, or you. No one asked for you to take the usage of the word abuse personally, and as adults and per context of the conversation it was apparent that I wasn't applying your definition of abuse when I meant the other. We weren't even talking about you...but now we are.

Knock it the fuck off and seriously, fuck you for taking it there.

This is the part of the debate where we curl our mustache corners (real or fake), realize neither side is contributing meaningfully to the debate itself, and step out for cigars and some scotch to talk about less debatable things. Like Religion and Politics.

I just wanted to curl my mustache.

I'm just a surge protector doing my job, sir.

@Sunny If you're going to use words like "abusive" or "unethical", the burden is on you to define and explain those terms. they don't mean "things I don't like".

HE POSTED THE FUCKING DEFINITION (which you then mocked him for). It was spot on. These peoples' behavior IS abusive, whether you like it or not. It's not 'locked me in a closet without food for a week' abusive, no, but in the CONTEXT of a MUSH ENVIRONMENT it absolutely IS abusive and it IS unethical.

ETA: And for that matter the statement that it can't be abusive because you can turn off the computer and walk away? I have very strong words for this. I am angry that you said this.

Other MUSH players and staffers are never your therapists, and using them as such is wrong. Mushing can be therapeutic, I know it has been both that and cathartic for me personally at times, but putting that on others that you don't even know is revolting to me. If you cannot handle setbacks or disappointments on a game you play, then you ought not be on it. Whether it's simply you hate the staff or you're just more sensitive than usual. It's never an excuse to say that the only acceptable staffing model or decision is the one that's yours and how dare anyone run anything contrary to it.

You don't like it? Don't play. You are unable to function in life because of something that happened on a game you're playing? You have no business being on it. It's bad for you and you have no business guilt tripping people for upsetting you to the point of illness. If you find yourself running into problems all over the place, maybe for the health of everyone it's best if you take a break. Because other people don't need to be subjected to your freak outs. (And you do not need to be a shut in or "unsuccessful" to struggle with those issues, and it kind of annoys me when it's implied otherwise).

@Sunny If they were hurting people emotionally OOC, that's abusive. If they were controlling and pitting people against each other, that's abusive. Making a private sandbox? That's not. Sorry.

When I made a staffing decision someone disagreed with, I got screamed at for hours on skype chat and in game by this (popular at the time) person and their friends, about how the game was all they had, they were ill, my decision upset her to the point of taking to her bed, how dare I deny someone with her issues just this little something that wouldn't have harmed anyone (except for it clearly would have caused a few massive problems).

There are many mushers, myself included, that struggle with a number of illnesses. Most people are respectful enough of themselves and others to not do that sort of thing. The ones that do though--are pretty abusive. Staff or player. I think there is a spectrum of abuse; and I've seen plenty of it perpetrated on games and by ill (or using their illness as an excuse) people online and in the flesh. Just because you can technically walk away does not negate the ick.

Making a private sandbox? No, the act itself isn't a problem. Their pattern of behavior, that's the problem. The way that they lead people on, that's a problem. The way that they're not honest about their intentions with their games, that's a problem. I think they're nice people, absolutely, but that does not make them immune to having abusive patterns of behavior, nor does it make them incapable of behaving like unethical shits. The private sandbox thing is where they should have gone from the start. The way that they've treated people is absolutely problematic, and their game and staff positions (the 100) were absolutely used to bad effects.

What I am objecting here to so strongly is this absolute piece of shit statement that YOU made:

People choosing to play in an online game where they can log off at any time with zero consequence are not being abused, you asshole.

                                    So again, fuck you.

ETA: And before you bring out the pity me pain train about your checkered past, DON'T GO THERE. I have been through shit, you don't want to get into that particular pissing contest with me.

This is a silly debate, but internet bullying is a real thing. Internet isn't a magical land, its not like saying my imaginary friend abused me. I've had real family snuff it from internet bullying. This is like you saying that this relative of mine was just being silly for taking their life cause its only internet and they should of walked away?

Truer words have never been spoken. As much as MU*ing can be fun, it is hard to forget that we know very little about the person on the other side of the screen, no matter how much information we give them. We don't know the staff's personal lives, unless we're fortunate enough to live near them even then not even sometimes, but what it boils down to, is that we can try to support and talk to each other, we're not the ones that will have the answers. Some need help, some have been through things we'll never understand. For those.. we can only offer an ear. And a shoulder. But by no means, we are neither sages or doctors.
