    • RE: RL things I love

      After spending a few hours at the FanExpo on Saturday I must say I loved it... again. Some notes:

      • I really like the zero judgment atmosphere. There were people there from all walks of nerddom, in all shapes, sizes and genders. Plenty of them were in wheelchairs and everything was accessible, folks were very considerate in general, and I spoted nothing I'd complain about in that regard.

      • So many families, which was awesome! Young'un nerds are the best ones. It's great to see kids coming in with their parents (this one family were doing a Sims cosplay which was adorkable), learning how to look but not touch, etc.

      • Cosplay... damn, although I know some costumes were definitely bought from somewhere others were clearly manually made and they required so much work. It's really impressive. The "Cosplay does not mean consent" signs everywhere plus Canadian politeness kept things civil, too.

      • My one complaint was trying to find a Firefly and/or Stargate shirt for a female friend. She needed an XXL and apparently women don't come in that size. Also maybe 1/6th (if that) of most vendors' shirt merchandise was for women at all... and their staff really didn't know, well, anything. "Stargate? I don't think we have that but... just in case, you know, so I can help you better. Is that a video game, a TV show or...?" Like come on, man, Jason Momoa is right there.

      Overall, awesome stuff. Looking forward to going again next year.

      For what "tier" the game will be on I'm thinking we're going to start small. The first "season" may focus on something localized and personal, something specific to Dayton.

      Just throwing ideas against the wall, but you could have two grids with two different themes, Dayton for small town Buffy shenanigans and like, Columbus or Cleveland for gritty life in the big city.

      Other games have done something similar.

      Splitting up the playerbase geographically, especially in niche MU* I'd expect to have fewer logins, is never a good idea in my opinion.

      Heh. Kind of Hogwarts meets Buffy, maybe? Or even a little X-Men vibe.

      Hogwarts was specifically what I kinda envisioned, just minus any of the 'tradition' behind it; Buffyverse would probably work best with something informal, made up on the fly, then made to work by keeping it together through force of personality and necessity but constantly on the verse of falling apart due to personal drama, breakups and betrayals.

      I'd play that.

      @zombiegenesis The big thing for you - and I think the main challenge - is make plot match your player activity.

      Buffy in its heart is a Hunter game from a certain point of view, and those tend to get either very sandbox-y and/or very reliant on Storytellers/GMs. Both of these traits can make a MU* inactive fast as their players become disconnected from each other then get stuck waiting for someone to do something.

      What you could consider is giving a different kind of structure for them to do on their downtime. Classes, for example; set up a Watcher supernatural school-within-the-school complete with tests, grades, teacher aides, things going wrong during spellcasting 101... just hand things for PCs to do with each other other than fight monsters of the week or TSrelationship drama which is great as gravy but very soon would get them idlying.

      Just an idea.

      That could be the meta-premise of a Buffy MU*; the Slayers are gone, the world is going to hell, and who can do something about it?

      Highschoolers, of course!

      If I hear any more shit about Shin Megami Tensei and its ilk, I'll explode.

      (Persona 5 is still pretty nifty.)

      Toronto.

      Because the world revolves around us, so it's only fitting that it also has a Hellsmouth.

      I'd like young-ish adult but adult. Not high school, but college.

      Either could work. I think Buffyverse would work best for an incestuous crowd; let drama build up between people fighting against the apocalypse who've also used to date, or who're in study groups together but someone's slacking off due to the extracurricular activities involved, etc.

      IC drama should drive this game as much as saving the world - IMHO.

      It would come with an actual compendium of demons and other monsters; it comes with lore; it comes with an actual system (the cinematic unisystem) that is built to simulate play in a "cinematic" fashion so you can do shit like what happened in the show.

      I suppose what made Buffy special to me (perhaps due to my own age when I first watched it) is that everything was placed at a school and the characters were figuring their shit out - supernatural, dating, sexuality, family, career - at the same time... all while monsters tried to eat them.

      I'm not saying it can't be done with older characters, just that it'd probably feel very similar to other kinds of Hunter-y games then. Different setting, sure, and the lore could make all the difference, but it'd still be quite a lot like those.

      @zombiegenesis Okay, I'll start!

      What differentiates a Buffy game from any other supernatural game if PCs can be anything (as opposed to being teenagers, the monsters of which the original TV show was an allegory for)? I don't mean that as criticism but as a point of discussion; what makes it stand apart compared to, say, a Hunter game?

      I don't know how the others were done, but basically Devilshire was a small town with way too much magic in it and two Slayers designated to patrol it (legit it was just two slots for slayers).

      In this era of "omg you can't limit slots whaaaaa" I don't know how people would do it other than, you know, maybe just no one gets to be a slayer.

      Yeah, that was one of my questions. Also can PCs be Slayers? What can PCs be? And what about themes - is this a coming-of-age thing centered around highschool drama with monsters in the mix or would the usual former sniper/marine concepts be a thing?

      Please Buffy? Please? This is me making big eyes.

      I'd love Buffy too but I have so many questions about how it'd be done, MUSH-wise.

      @wretched
      What's funny is going into a mythic under-geared and out DPSing some of the people in better gear than me as a tank.

      I have not seen that toll shit going on but that is...well that's fucked up.

      People are insane about efficiency based on what they read online. I get everyone wants fast runs but this is mythic0; it's hardly challenging content at all. For example everyone wants paladins and priests for reasons that have nothing to do with that difficulty level; they are rated they way they are in top guild/player posts because of the extra utility they bring, extra damage, strong survival cooldowns, etc... which are completely unnecessary for what we're currently doing.

      The only specs who don't care about any of this atm are tanks. I'm pretty sure if I queued up as a tank even at 20 ilvls lower than I am I'd get instant groups. Which I actually would do if people weren't absolute shits to tank players in PUGs.

      At work when you first see a coworker in the morning.

      "Hey, good morning!"

      The second time you run into them, kinda stretching it.

      "Hey!"

      The third time.

      <nods>

      The forth time.

      <upward nod>
