RE: Good TV
Stumptown. It's pretty good! And who the hell knew Maria Hill/the chick from How I Met Your Mother could act?
???? Everyone who watched HIMYM and the Marvel movies and shows she was in???
Seriously.
This whole "I didn't like this person in this role and so that means they can't act" thing needs to stop.
I wasn't doing that thing. I appreciated the actress in both HIMYM (I watched the whole thing - terrible ending though, not that it's on Cobie Smulders of course), and she had a limited but impactfull role as Maria Hill. I really have wanted to see her as Wonder Woman since her name was floated for a time while Joss Whedon was still attached to it.
I just didn't know she could act, at least on the level she's pulling off in Stumptown. She's taking it to another level. It's a compliment for her newer work, not a complaint about her past.

RE: PB 'realism'
@RavenGirl On the flipside it really bugs me sometimes when I find some artwork that blows my mind and I have no idea who the artist is to find out if they've made more.
Reverse image lookup sometimes helps but not always.

PB 'realism'
Since we're discussing PBs in general lately here's a question from me.
When you pick PBs do you care about 'realism' or do you go for the general fit between the picture/artwork's looks and your character? And when you see others using a specific type of PB does that influence your responses if there is a perceived discrepancy?
For example if you're playing a thuggish fighter type but your model is a slender more delicate looking person, or it's a figure skater as depicted by Chris Hemsworth, etc... is that okay? Not okay? Do you notice when people do that?

RE: RL things I love
A few friends from work and I joined a basketball league together (4 of us and 6 randoms).
In our first game we played last year's champions. These guys had their own custom jerseys. They had a coach. We didn't even know each other's names, and the pace compared to our pick-up runs was insane - I played like 28 minutes and got gassed. We turned the ball over so much!
Oh we also lost by fifty points.
It was amazing, I can't wait for next Sunday.

RE: Well, this sums up why I RP
@Ghost said in Well, this sums up why I RP:
And why do YOU guys RP?
Because I like it. It's creative, social (well, in a way) and a habit.
As hobbies go, no other reasons are really needed but also how can you truly explain why you like a thing? It resonates somehow.
I wouldn't underestimate the 'habit' part of it, either. A lot of people are engaged in whatever they're doing simply because it was a part of their life before so it's important to them, and thus they keep doing it long after the original reasons are no longer valid.
For example MU* (and MUDs, specifically) used to be basically the only ways to play online with other people in fantasy or sci-fi environments. That's no longer the case, but some of us got a taste of it and we don't want to let go.

Snow day!
Had to be on a call anyway to keep a project moving, but my boss kept it brief and I got to stay in my pjs. And it looks like snow starting at 4 again today.
I love working somewhere we close when the school does.

RE: Gap between RP fantasy and RP reality

I was expecting the conclusion of this post to be 'find another game', because that's what I thought the first two paragraphs were building up to. And that's what I would do if I really wanted to play a scarred up war vet who kept getting dragged into birthday party RP! Sounds to me like a clash between player interests vs. existing game culture & setting.
Why mangle your desired character concept to suit a game that can't provide what you really want?
Because just like sometimes life gives you lemons, MU* give you birthday parties. And sure, you could drift off, try to perservere or try your luck with a different crowd in the same game, or you need to adjust.
While we're in control of our PCs and despite what the game's theme is, other people factor very heavily into what we actually get to do on the grid. Sometimes you sign up for gritty survival (since that's what the wiki implies) but get Zombieland instead. You could leave and look for gorier pastures but it's not the only option.

RE: Gap between RP fantasy and RP reality
@Staricide said in Gap between RP fantasy and RP reality:
What areas do you find there's the biggest difference between what you imagine doing with your character before you start playing them and how things always seem to go once you're actually playing them?
I think in general terms it's got less to do with the characters than the players and the environment since that's what your roleplay hinges on.
For example you can make your battle-hardened, wizened veteran with PTSD who you want to try and stay out of conflict until he gets pulled right back into it by the circumstances... and yet all you find is birthday parties RP, or maybe there aren't enough STs to run said conflict so although everyone talks about war there isn't really any action, and so on.
That's why it pays off so much to create open-ended characters. Have their initial personality, their back story, their views and dreams (or nightmares) on the back burner then... use what you get on the game.

RE: Good TV
Lol, it shows so much. In episode 2, Dracula pretty much is Dr. Who. I couldn't get through episode 3, it was complete trash.
Moffat can be so great, and he can also be so bad. I think he just needs a good handler to filter his ideas.
I think he starts with great ideas, and he's also - obviously - a pretty talented writer. His dialogue is often very memorable with quips and comebacks that elevate the material and showcase his characters' development.
On the other hand he tries so hard sometimes to let the audience know how smart he is, and to make commentaries about the modern lifestyle. That's what I meant by self-indulgence being his vice here, someone should have pointed that out to him.
Sometimes the material speaks for itself and it's... enough. Not every show needs to be about everything.

RE: RL Anger
I was tipped a twenty dollar bill and it had to be spilt between myself and a coworker.
I handed her $10 I had in my pocket and took the $20. She said it wasn’t fair that I had $20 and she only had $10.
I tried to explain to her that I already had the $10, so another $10 (that a previous customer had given me for busing her table) equalled $20. She couldn’t wrap her head around it, insisting I was trying to rip her off. She gave me back the ten bucks, took the twenty to a register and made change of two 10 dollar bills.
As she hands me mine I showed her that now I still have $20 and she has $10, but somehow she was satisfied she’d thwarted my attempts to short change her.

RE: Good TV
I'm a huge Star Wars nerd and I found The Mandalorian, at times, felt like a generic sci-fi show that was then reskinned with Star Wars aesthetics and themes.
That's the amazing part about it. It's a western in space - much like Firefly but in the Star Wars universe, too. It's a feature, not a drawback!

RE: Critters!
@Auspice My last cat was a stray. I was on my way to get my car and drive to work one morning when she literally came out of a random bush, walked in front of me, looked up and mewled expectantly.
I was like "okay, uh, I guess I have a kitten now".

RE: Good TV
I'm a Neil Marshall fan. I'm enjoying it. It's a very classic-type adventure show, like the Fraser Mummy movies.
What do you mean by movies? Only one was ever made, sadly.
