    • RE: SW: Dawn of the Jedi - Modified d20 Saga (Pre Old Republic Era)

      Here's a concern/issue that I have.

All of this is fine. There are theories, different views and various parts in canon (from the movies, animated series, EU books, comics, etc) over the last 35-40 years about what the Force is and how it works. That's part of the fun, it's great.

What I'd like is for staff to give us a direction on just how they expect things to work in the context of that game. Are characters still playable if they fall to the Dark Side? What exactly are the social rules for Jedi - can they be trained later in life, are they permitted to marry? Are other Force-related factions available (as in, not essentially recreated by players who've read the books, but actual established communities and part of the theme)?

I think being transparent upfront about what is part of the thematic scope a game is going to incorporate - and what isn't - should be decided and broadcasted very clearly.

@Ganymede said in What do you eat?:

I don't mind anecdotal evidence or advice. In fact, I think that most of us follow anecdotal evidence and/or advice when it comes to what we believe to be healthy choices. And there's nothing wrong with that.

There's nothing wrong with offering advice based on anecdotal evidence, it's just not science. For starters it's not necessarily reproducable - what worked for me might not work for you - nor conclusive; was the fact I consumed a lot of greek yogurt during my diet successful because somethingsomething-bacteria-digestive-track-something or just because it happened to fit within an otherwise caloric deficit? Unclear! And that means if you start gobbling up yogurt, too, it might work... or it might not.

I like numbers because they can lead to establishing a routine, which leads to forming habits. In my personal experience (heh) nothing is more important than habits - motivation isn't worth a damn thing against the pressures of everyday life, discipline wanes when you're tired and distracted, but good habits can carry you all the way to achieving your goals.

@Ganymede said in What do you eat?:

First, I have concluded that studies suffer from a great deal of confirmation bias and lack of controls. The diversity of food studies and their results only demonstrate to me how inconclusive the science is.

I concur. It was frankly shocking to me when I realized just how shaky research is on matters of nutrition and just how many studies either use tiny samples or lack some semblance of control groups to validate their conclusions.

For example even very basic questions such as "how much protein is needed" or "does the timing of meals matter" are answered differently by researchers who often resort to anecdotal evidence ('this is what worked for me') to support their claims.

It's frustrating and it's given way to a whole lot of bro-science to emerge, especially once confirmation bias started to play a role - is <athlete's name>'s nutrition what made them great, or are they great and their nutrition simply supported their needs? Unclear!

At this point I think the choice of diet should be personally chosen on the same basis as the choice of exercise; do what works for you, selected on the basis that anything you do will be better than nothing at all, and that if it doesn't fit your life then you won't do it, which ultimately defeats the whole point. Is it keto? That's great! If It Fits Your Macros? That's awesome! Eat small meals around the day? Weight Watchers? Some medically supervised diet?

Whatever, as long as it's relatively healthy then it's probably better than eating potato chips all day and we're better off for doing that instead.

Just back in from Jojo Rabbit. Absolutely loved it - switches from laugh out loud one moment to tears the next. Highly recommend. 5/7.

... why are you grading movies out of 7? 😛

      Mon-Fri:

      • Wake up at 5:00
      • Have a protein shake, let the dogs out
      • Drive to the gym, work out until 7:30
      • Shower
      • Work 8:00 - 11:30
      • Eat lunch
      • Work 12:30 - 16:00
      • Drive home
      • Watch TV/play games/read books until 21:00
      • Sleep

      Weekend:

      • Wake up when Rusty, the asshole moluccan cockatoo, decides I should be up.
      • Have a protein shake, let the dogs out
      • Drive to the gym, work out until whatever.
      • Get home, have lunch, play games/watch TV/read books until I'm sleepy.

On Tuesday nights I also have basketball between 17:00 and 19:00, then on Thursdays a soccer game between 17:00 and 18:00.

I don't like a lot of variety in my life. I do well with a routine and dislike it being upset for too long.

I wish I was a vegetarian but that's only because I know how the animals whose meat I eat are treated before they are slaughtered.

I am not ready to be one. That's on me, I consider it a flaw of mine.

However I'll happily tell whoever tries to push me to change how I eat (by guilt-tripping me into it or otherwise) just how they can best fuck off.

    • RE: Good TV

At this point two things are true:

      1. Not everyone will like something but those who don't - whether they're in the minority or not - will get loud and be noticeable. What would bloggers clickbait on? That no one complained? Who's going to click on that?

      2. If any character not explicitly defined as non-Caucasian in any work of fiction is depicted by a non-white actor people will complain. Oh. Well.

My personal opinion is that as long as it makes some sense I don't care. For example when Dracula depicted some black and Asian nuns among the cast I didn't care because that world already has vampires and shit so maybe racism works differently there. Hell, for all I know maybe it happened more often than I'm aware of - it's plausible, and that crosses my bar.

So yeah, it probably comes down to racism. Just make good casting choices and make the show good, then things will magically work out.

    • RE: Good TV

Dracula (the new TV series on Netflix) was amazing.

But it was only amazing if you watch the first two episodes then ignore the huge cliffhanger at the end and stop right there.

The third episode was a self-indulgent piece of shit of epic proportions. The two which preceded it were full of tension, great performances and - despite a few very obvious plot holes put there just to make the plot work - really worth a watch. Sister Agatha was a kickass character.

If you like Dr. Who then you'll also want to check it out as this is written by Moffat/Gatiss and... well, it shows. A lot.

@Wizz It's one good way to look at it. However it doesn't explain why other cities have villains, too, or why Gotham was such a complete shithole before that bat came crushing through the window of Wayne Manor that one night.

In fact it's canon masked societies, bad guys and even vigilantes are a preexisting condition for Gotham.

Hey, my last 'AHEM THE THREAD IS GOING OFF TOPIC' post of this decade!

So does the existence of PvP/PK and/or a +warn mechanism relate to whether the power curve is normalized (and where) on a game? If so, please carry on. If not let's discuss that in a separate thread. 🙂

See also the rainbow-colored Mickey Mouse hats they sell during Pride Month. I think I mentioned those already but can't be bothered to check.

That is blatant profiteering merchandising. Not a statement of support. Disney would sell nazi Donald duck plushies at far right rallies if they thought it would make them net profit.

Donald Duck does not fuck around, my friend.

Also, did you actually want a Disney/Nazi crossover?
