I don't think shower preferences are a gender thing. I'm a guy, and I like my showers so hot that it leaves my skin red after.

Don't know. But women in the office complaining that it's too cold does seem to be common.

Anemia is more common in women.
Anemia tends to lead to an iron deficiency. Iron deficiency means your red blood cells aren't working efficiently to carry oxygen through your body to do things like, oh...keep you warm.

Anemia is a pita because it's honestly really difficult to keep iron levels up. Esp. when paired with other common conditions in women, like hypothyroidism.

Did you know iron (iron pills, iron rich foods, etc?) can make hypothyroidism worse? I have to juggle my pills each day and the food I eat so that they don't all cancel each other out. Thyroid pill immediately when I wake up. No dairy or anything with iron! And I don't want to take any calcium supplements alongside my iron supplement because that can cause severe nausea...

      yadda yadda yadda...

When the kale (super food!) craze was going on, some people actually tipped themselves into temporary hypothyroidism because they were taking too much of it (you should cook kale if you have hypothyroidism; don't have things like it or spinach or broccoli raw....at least not too much of it.)

I was fucking up my meds and timing so bad until I sat down with an endocrinologist and she was like "No wonder none of your shit has been working. None of your other doctors ever told you any of this?!"

Also, for any other anemic ladies: look up "blood builder" on Amazon. It's the only one that doesn't make me sick. Also has a bunch of other vitamins and minerals in it. Friend of mine that's a midwife/doula recommended it years ago.

And for the love of Cthulhu don't make any last-second melodramatic motions, long posts or bridge-burning to signal your exit. Inform any actual friends or regular partners you're going or how to reach you if they want to, then make a graceful exit.

      Needs more up-votes.

but if I don't kill off my character in a super dramatic way how will anyone know how important I was?!?!

(I have never done this. I have, however, in the past absolutely done a Pubchan 'This is the problem here. Peace. I'm out.' I regret it in one case. Not in another.)

@faraday said in Asynchronous Plots in Ares:

How can you RP a scene on Tuesday evening with your buddies when you don't know if you died/got seriously injured/lost a friend/got captured/whatever in that adventure that ICly took place Monday night? I just have trouble wrapping my brain around how that would work, practically speaking.

This is exactly why it's more 'forward-scening' the way I'm doing it.

The events of the plot have not occurred yet. So if one of the PCs gets shot tomorrow in the plot, it doesn't affect the scene they're having live on-game tonight because it hasn't happened yet.

It will be considered to have happened once it is finished. So if we finish this current scene on August 28th: the events therein will be considered to have occurred on August 28th.

This way I don't have to tell them the outcome in advance (I'd personally not enjoy that as a player! I wanna be surprised) or be concerned with things like 'I know this happened on the 8th, but today (the 16th), I bought a brand new BG skill that applies....'

@Auspice Yeah I hear you. To me that doesn't really solve the continuity issues, it just shifts them. If I get shot in the scene that's live on-game tonight it disrupts the plot RP that's "pending".

But I'm finnicky about continuity so I know my feelings are not universal. I know there are entire games run without much regard to continuity. And I'm glad to see folks trying new things. So don't mind me 🙂

Considering I can count the number of people I've seen rp an injury past the day it occurred on one hand...

      I'm not too worried.

      @Ganymede

      I'm sorry, Gany. 😞

And don't be upset at yourself (if you are) for having that wish. We all, when we are so very stressed out, have wishes like that (the 'if only...'). Relating to us, to pets, to our jobs, etc... They're never honest wishes, they're just... the stress, the anxiety, the depression (or whatever) talking.

So, y'know: if any part of you is mad at yourself for that, don't be. It was human and bot jokes aside, you are human.

Love the kitty tonight, love the kids, and yes. Euthanasia is humane. It's better to pass in peace than to suffer in pain. Wholly agree.

'Exploring the psychology of a character' isn't bad, no. I didn't say it was.

I was saying it's a bad excuse to do exactly what your rule is about.

It was brought up in this very thread earlier, in the sense of: 'why is it so bad to want to RP underage sex if I want to explore the psychology of it.'
It's bad for many of the reasons you put forth and more.

    • What do you enjoy about STing?

I was sitting here reflecting on how much fun I'm having STing on SGM and it brought to mind... for those that ST, why do you do it? What keeps bringing up back? It can't be just the desire to tell a story: there's got to be more (else you'd just tell it for yourself; write a short story; save it for a TT).

Some of the things off the top of my head that 'make it' for me:

      • Seeing people get into their characters and enjoy themselves.
      • Watching someone figure out what you've been dropping hints for.
      • On the other hand? Seeing someone get it utterly wrong and knowing what a fun ride it'll be when they figure that out.
      • The times when someone discovers something new about their character.
      • ...or even gets to just dive deeper into an aspect of their PC.

These are just some of the things I love. What about you? What has brought you joy in STing?

In more "my family fucking sucks:"

Seeing my sister post on Twitter about how she grew up with only brothers and had no other female influence growing up except her mother. And "this is why girls like me are so different than girls who grew up with sisters!" (look she just turned 20 okay)

Punch in the fucking gut. Esp when I liked to tell people how happy it made me to see how much stronger my sister was as a teenager (willing to speak up in defense of herself, speaking out against how toxic our father could be, etc) than I was...despite how our mother never did anything like that for us.

My sister doesn't know I know what her Twitter account is but goddamn if that doesn't make me wanna reveal it. I know she's doing it just for the attention but damn if it doesn't hurt.

    • RE: RL things I love

After 3 weeks without AC (look, Texas; I need it), I finally have working AC again.

It only took finally sending a certified letter to the leasing office threatening them under the TX Renters Rights that if they didn't get it fixed by X date, I would consider the lease broken, no longer be paying rent, and I'd move out two weeks after that date with no repercussions. (Along with a list of each time I'd called them and been brushed off -twice- and each time I'd submitted a maintenance request -eight- with no response).

I might finally get a good night's rest tonight.

I was sad to discover that by the numbers, I am considered a millienial. The fact that I'm kind of disturbed by that probably means I/we bear a responsibility to change what the subtext of 'millenial' is. If I'm one, they're getting a lot of it wrong.

It's why I (driven by a friend of mine, tbh; he got ME to stop using the term to mean 'anyone under the age of 25') try to help encourage people away from it. 'Millennial' doesn't just mean 'young person' (or worse: 'young person I don't understand who is clearly the downfall of everything'). It just means we're the gen after Gen X.

It's that damn iGen that's ruining everything! 😉

@Auspice Most people with large salaries are always one bad year away from being an hourly wage slave. I wish more people at that level acknowledged that.

The number of people I know with college degrees who got sick or had some other life event that got them let go and can't find their way back into their old field is pretty high.

I mean, I've been out of work almost a month. Had a bunch of interviews. But the only job offer I've gotten is nearly $5/hr pay cut. And not even remotely related to my field. I'mma have to break my lease, move most of my stuff into storage / get rid of it.

I think the folks who seem to think that there is some magical marketing technique or some interface that will radically make it so that mushing is hot amongst those 20 something that are interested in online RP--i think that's engaging in some denial right there.

      Precisely this.

I could pay for ads on Google and similar all I want, but the chances of gaining any new long-term players is still slim. I'd probably get some early bites and then people would wander off.

We have to consider the culture and style heavily. There's a lot of different kinds of text-based roleplay, too. Back on Livejournal, I'd see people 'scene set' in a post and then everyone would RP through the comments. When I moderated a forum of tweens & teens for work, I saw TONS of roleplay, but people were constantly cycling through and trying new characters or the same character in different places/situations/times/etc. There was a lot of RP, but almost none of it (even ignoring the 'interface') like ours. GTAV has a mod/servers to roleplay, but it's a mix of avatar action, /me emotes, and voice chat. I'm sure PBEM still exists.

I've tried or witnessed all of these and the core approach is wildly different to us. We sit down, as @Ghost said, for hours at a stretch. And while things like Ares alleviate that with the portal scenes: look at peoples' reactions to my discussion on asynchronous plots. A lot of us have no interest in doing things play-by-post (which, again, is what a lot of kids these days do in their RP!). That's a huge divide right there.

It's not a fancy web interface. It's not marketing. (I'm part of a huge group of nerdy women here in Austin. I've spoken of MUing to the ones that like 'roleplay:' none are interested in the format. And they range in age from 18 to their 50s.) It's just that we're a different culture and style. People will find us, but... there's no magical 'solution.'
