    • RE: The ADD/ADHD Thread (cont'd from Peeves)

'Oh right I need to do that thing okay but I have to do this other thing first so-' and then it falls off the stack.

Get up to go make food, the stack is:
      'Make food'
In the kitchen it becomes: 'Get a drink, make food'
Cat begins fussing at me: 'Give cat treats, get a drink, make food'
I see the dishes need to be done: 'Give cat treats, get a drink, make food'

At some point, something / everything falls out of the stack. And this is what the neurotypical types don't understand. If I, say, walk out of the kitchen for some reason (e.g. need to use the bathroom)... the whole cycle resets and I don't remember 'make food' for possibly hours.

I picked up a freelance writing gig.

I hate it. I am very close to going 'Look, I've already put over 10 hours into this. It's not worth $90 anymore' to the guy that hired me. Whoever he has as his 'editor' for the writers is a fucking idiot.

Edit me for grammar. Edit me for phrasing. Edit me for legibility. But if you can't follow the bouncing ball of the topic and concepts like 'According to studies [link]....' have you whining at me 'We can't make unfounded claims!' (lady it's not unfounded the link to the fucking study is right there I'm not going to rehash the entire medical study in copy that's supposed to be 'lighthearted' and 'easily consumed' jfc) maybe you need a different line of work.

If you're editing for content as well as grammar, you need to do the research on the topic, too.

I should've followed my instincts that this was not a worthwhile gig.

I ended up firing them as a client. Because it was clear the editor just did not know what they were doing nor were they following the guidelines set forth. Which was putting me in a terrible position.

But the outcome now is that they're not paying me for the time/effort I did put in.

I know someone (not a MUer) who has to move to Sweden. She can't bring her cats (not a quarantine issue but the fact that she'll be living with family initially and they won't let her bring them).

She's struggling to find a home for them. Two cats, littermates. 9 years old. Indoor only. Like the cuddles.

She's in the Portland, OR area. If you or anyone you know might be able to take them in, please let me know and I'll put you in contact.

@Auspice Fun fact: goldstone is actually a kind of man-made glass material. It's very pretty and often misnamed 'sunstone' which is a naturally occurring stone and one of my favorites. AND ALL OF THEM ARE PRETTY.

I JUST LOVE HOW IT SHIMMERS IN THE SUNLIGHT. XD

And I just dug through (now that I'm back on my PC) my etsy purchases and yes! It is goldstone. 😄

Adult diagnosis of ADHD continues to be an adventure in "Oh, that's not just me being weird?"

      Yep. My life as well.

      big same.

But at least it helps, y'know? Knowing you aren't alone.

I'm not sure how commonly the chewing is part of ADHD. I'm also on the autism spectrum, so I may get it from that (I have fabric sensitivities and weirdnesses also....like part of why I prefer living in the southwest is I hate wearing layers because fabric on fabric is the worst thing ever. I can handle hoodies and sometimes the rare oversized sweater but when it's like leggings under jeans for super cold or layered shirts due to cold I end up hella irritated and upset because of the constant fabric catching and tugging and rubbing and.....)

I don't even know if I explained that properly but yeah. 😐

I don't chew on my lips a lot, but I do chew at my cuticles compulsively. I didn't really think of that as a thing until I had a therapist point it out once.

@Kanye-Qwest I love that more and more clothes are printing the tag info because my issue with cutting them out is there always seems to be a little nub of ITCH left.

      Hawk is the best. #changemymind

Hawk IS a great character for all kinds of reasons, up to and including being a perfect example as to how a sweet, bullied kid can become the worst of the worst, which I've seen happen so much.
They'll need to introduce more antagonists before they consider a "redemption arc" for Hawk, but I'd be down to see more Eli/Demetri bromance.

So this is part of why Hawk is the best.

I don't need or even necessarily want my characters to be perfect bastions of human behavior.

But so often our story for a 'omg so shy and passive' nerd is that he becomes confident and attractive and-

Hawk's story so far has been realistic. He's a guy who was bullied for how he looked, so instead of some hackneyed LET'S GIVE YOU A MAKEOVER STORY TEEHEE (female chars get subjected to this far, far too often), they had him own the shit out of it.

He's a TEENAGER. He's not going to transform into being the best human being overnight.

The reason Hawk is the best is because his story has depth to it. Because it's engaging. Because it's fun. I love Hawk.

Kids bring afraid of dogs is why, in dog training (I was so happy to have learned this and taught it to dogs I owned), the hand sign for 'down' is to draw your hands up by your shoulders.

It's the classic reflexive pose a child will go into when they're scared. Fists up tight by their shoulders.

Train your dog that it means 'down' and they'll come to an immediate halt.

It's a good backup plan when you do leash, etc, but some parent comes within leash range going 'Oh look st the puppy!' when you aren't looking and you do have a very very good and friendly dog but the child is not ready for it. (My Cleo was amazing and protective af. She protected me from a neighbor's dog once. She would body slam other dogs at the dog park who would try to jump up on me because she knew I didn't like it. But she did always want pets so she'd run up wiggle butt to someone new.....unless she got the signal and then she'd just sit)

    • RE: RL Sads

Approximately a year ago, I was texting with a friend and they just... stopped responding mid-conversation. It was an upbeat, casual convo. Catching up, joking around, etc.

I sent a few texts here and there over the following weeks, but nothing. The last thing, until today, was a message in November of hey I hope everything is OK, I wish I knew what happened.

I've fret over them some ever since. Because what if they had gotten injured? What if something happened to them? etc etc

Then this week, I saw them start popping up as playing games on Steam (I have my Steam set to where it alerts me when my friends are playing games; I know some people disable this, but I have a handful of people in my circle of friends where we're all happy to have people jump in and join us)... so I decided to reach out and say hi.

I doubt I'll hear back. It eats at me not knowing why they stopped replying. There'd been no fight. No disagreement. This person had been a really close friend since high school. It just came out of the blue and... it still aches. I don't think any lost friendship has ever affected me this much.

@RightMeow said in The ADD/ADHD Thread (cont'd from Peeves):

So is it ADHD to need music to focus? In HS (a million years ago), it use to drive my mother crazy that I would have music and like another task going while studying. She never believed me when she said it helped me focus.

I learn more and more being on this board.

It's a definite coping mechanism. I wouldn't say 'It's ADHD to need' because I know plenty of people without ADHD who use music to focus. There's a reason studies have shown the types of music that are best for things like studying, concentrating, etc. It does things to the brain.

For me though, it keeps my brain occupied. If I don't have music while I'm driving, I drive worse because the 'ooh shinies' in my brain get free rein. My mother hated this when I was learning to drive. She wanted me to drive with 'no distractions' (as if her and the rest of my family weren't distraction enough, yeesh), but I persisted and now.... I can tell a definite difference between yes music and no music.
