You would not believe how many times I've had a char fall for someone and THEN go check out their PB and I'm like 'oh wow that person is wildly unattractive (to me)'

Somewhat related, people have been trying to hit on me for years by complimenting my PB's attractiveness, and not for my life can I think of a response to that. Uh... thanks for thinking someone who isn't me is pretty enough to be worth your attraction, I guess?

'Thanks for telling me up front you aren't worth my time!'

"I don't get it. You like girls, and I'm playing a girl, so you must want to fuck me whether you know me or not because that's how attraction works, right?"

You would not believe how many times I've had a char fall for someone and THEN go check out their PB and I'm like 'oh wow that person is wildly unattractive (to me)'
      or
had people I'm RPing with page me various pics of their PB like 'look how hot my char is here' and I'm like 'uh, I guess???'

Sorry people, I don't care about shirtless pics or sideboob or dat ass (even America's Ass). tbh for me it's all about eyes. If they have really stunning eyes, I might be drawn in. I'm an eye-sexual.

Also because it's just easier. It's easier for me to tell people I'm gay and have them get all surprised when I hook up with a woman than to try and explain bisexuality is a real thing. @Auspice and I have talked about this at length.

You're not allowed to be not-an-extreme.

I've largely found MUSHes to be far more progressive when it comes to gender/sexuality politics than when it comes to race.

If you say so. I've found that people's progressive attitudes toward my gender and sexuality directly correlate to how much they can fap to them, which I guess is better than a lot of reactions but is still pretty creepy.

This is the perk of being pansexual. People mistake me for woke because I'll fap to anything.

This is the perk of being bisexual. People don't know we fuckin' exist.

ETA: Why do I call myself gay then, you ask? Because fuck you, that's why.

When we do exist it's 'cause we're stealin' everyone's wives and husbands cause if you like more than one gender obviously you can't be with one person at a time.

I think the reason a lot of people in this thread are getting frustrated is this:
most people in this thread already do play POC. They also play white people. They play all kinds of characters.

So the implication that 'if you have a white character right now you're a bad person and racist' is what's ruffling feathers. Is that what @egg intended? Maybe not. But that is how it has come across.

The whole 'MUsSoWhite' and implied going onto games to shame any PC who has blue eyes (I mean, as discussed, that'd be a bad idea on a place like Arx where you can be any color of skin with any color of hair with any color of eyes because it's fantasy so please don't do that there) is just a bad take on encouraging diversity.

@Auspice I am so glad I am in a position I can flip the little digital switch on my phone that says to just ignore numbers that are not in my contact list. I bypass so many spam calls that way.

      Unfortunately, since I'm job-hunting, I can't do that. 😞

So I SUPER appreciate the ones that the OS flags as Political or Spam and most of those from the state my # is in (SC) can be safely ignored (no recruiters are gonna call me from there). But any from TX? CA? NY? NJ? IL(Chicago)? They could be for jobs since recruiters call from a lot of those areas. 😕

      So tired of political calls.

No I don't live in that state anymore.
Don't live in that one either.
      Or that one.

No, I'm not supporting that candidate. (in TX you don't have to register for a party so I get calls from EVERYONE.)
No, I don't want to join your phone canvassing.
Didn't I tell you guys to take me off your call list last week?

I am super, super glad that my phone does warn me now on some calls that they're a Political Call (just like it warns some are Spam Calls), but I did just get a text message addressed to someone who isn't even me and I've had this number for 13 years.

Like at least get your numbers accurate ffs.

@egg said in Diversity Representation in MU*ing:

@Auspice So the two choices are to play someone exactly like yourself or a stereotype?

It doesn't have to be like this. People can educate themselves. I don't even run a game so I have zero power to "shove" anyone into doing anything at all. All I'm doing here is talking.

No one is even saying those are the only two choices.
We're saying: why is it SO BAD if we play a white character?

      My current characters:
      white (roster)
      native american (fc)
      white (oc)
      black (oc)
      white (fc)

I DO play a spectrum of character types. I even play male characters sometimes! I've played white men, black men, hispanic men. I have no male chars rn, but I have. But the thing is, I don't fault anyone for 'I don't feel comfortable playing that because I don't think I can grasp it properly.'
I don't play gay men. It's not something I can get into the mindset of. I've tried! It just didn't really work for me.

"athletic with curves" should be banned from all descs.

athletic with curves is fine! (look up the 'dances with fat' blog for more on this) It's the 'lithe with curves' one that makes me grind my teethe because the very definition of lithe is THIN AND SUPPLE. 😐 You can be curvy and athletic, sure. Most athletes are kinda bulky. BUT LITHE IS NO.

@egg said in Diversity Representation in MU*ing:

@Kestrel Why shouldn't I be mad? If I spend most of my leisure hours in a place where "representing yourself" = white (and even moreso, Aryan half of the time), shouldn't I want to see change there? Is it as important as the film industry changing its racial bias? Of course not. Does that mean I shouldn't care at all? No.

Because of the reasons she said above.

It'd be more damaging if people ended up portraying gross stereotypes.

To pull from my own experiences:
as a bisexual woman, I can't stand seeing people play pan/bi characters as serial cheaters because 'well it's not like they can commit, heehee!' or 'oh s/he's just bi until someone convinces him/her to choose to be gay!'
As a woman whose heritage is predominantly Irish, oh god the Irish stereotypes. I know this isn't even REMOTELY as bad as the racist stereotypes, but the Oirish crowd pisses me off sometimes. I hate the accent typing. I hate the drunken Irish stereotype that you see ALL OVER WoD games paired with the accent typing. Again, not remotely as bad as racist stereotypes, but I still feel insulted when I see it.

Going around shoving people into playing POC would just invite racist stereotypes by people who don't know what they're doing and it would be so much worse. They might not do it out of malice, but the ignorance could DEFINITELY alienate people.

@Kanye-Qwest And it worked out so well for me.

In creating Ephrath my thought process was basically 'Ok, I'm making a jeweler. I want her to be black. I also want her to be really into snakes. .... I wonder if I can find a PB that fits this theme.' And then I found the image I did and she's gorgeous and snek and silver eyes and I was like ermg yes this is perfect for me and it is Arx where black girl with silver eyes would be totally acceptable DONE.

I keep reading this thread thinking back to the time I used Mahershala Ali as a PB and my friend (black guy) played his petite white (blonde) girlfriend and it's cracking me up.

But on a personal note: a lot of my PB / char choices are my own form of escapism. On scifi games you'll often find me playing chars with a cybernetic leg (or go down a storyline with that option) because I have had surgeries, arthritis, etc in my right leg and have gone stretches using a cane. Some days I wake up, get out of bed, and my leg gives out on me. Having a personal storyline where a character can get their leg 'fixed' helps me.

Most of my female PCs are over 5'5" because I'm only 5'3" and I hate being a woman in my 30s who has to use step stools and tongs just to get shit out of her own cabinets and even then the top shelves are just unused space.

As mentioned, I don't often play chars with brown eyes because of bullying in childhood (see: Ephrath on Arx, black girl with silver eyes because fuck yeah fantasy).

My go-to on video games (since that has been brought up) is tan (wouldn't say black but I guess brown?ish?) with blue hair and silver eyes...or silver eyes and blue hair. Because why not. Blue and silver are my favorite colors.
