      Double post blah blah...

For class right now, we have to build portfolio sites. OK, that's fine. I've meant to for years now.

Got the feedback on my 'work so far' today and one of the things my instructor wants me to do is to replace my intro with 'Welcome to my slice of the web.'

      No.
      Fuck no.
      Hell no.

I am not doing that 'slice of the web' or 'corner of the web' bullshit. This is supposed to be a professional writing portfolio, not a 16-year-old in 2002 building a Geocities page.

I don't even care if she penalizes me on the final for not including that. No way in hell.

I have always heard it used as the one you have the lowest number in. From the olden days of random char gen it was the stat you dumped your worst roll in.
Not sure when it first came into use but I know I heard it used that way when I was in junior high so mid-late 80s.

That's how I always used it!

But I was chatting with someone and mentioned upping a PC's Presence, 'Because it's my dump stat' and he goes, 'I don't think that means what you think it means.'

And turns out to him, 'dump stat' is the one you put the most points in. I had never, ever heard it like that before. We've both played TT and MU*d for a similar number of years, in similar genres, but we also grew up in the same region, so I don't think it's "regional."

So this was spawned by a conversation earlier about the term 'dump stat' and I'd like to see where people lie (as the person and I knew it in different contexts).

@Arkandel Eh, can't say I disagree with them.

I don't disagree either, but it's somewhat silly to get up in arms over.

Which quoted fan comments from that article were "up in arms," exactly? Like, is complaining at all about it being "up in arms?" The complaints quoted were pretty tame and mostly sounded long-suffering to me. (Like: "Ah yes, yet again the woman magically bereft of body hair in the situation where she would totally have it. We meet again.")

I only skimmed the article on my fly-by as I go through evening stuff. My fault for taking from Arkandel's tone that people were getting angry over it.

And seitan works super well with Cavender's greek spice to make faux-gyro meat.

I had seitan for the first time two weeks ago. Reading this dredged up all the incredibly confused feelings that went through my head while chewing it, none of which were 'this tastes like and/or has the texture of meat'.

I think it really depends on how it's prepared. Kinda like tofu.

I am just learning to tell myself no. Because I see a new craft thing and go 'want! I want to do that!' and then I just end up back to knit/crochet after a while.

So I keep telling myself no.
      No.
      No.

(Though I will probably still get pottery lessons because that has stuck in my head for a decade.)

I just typoed, in a scene:

      lawyer of awkward

My RP partner got excited over this typo. "There's a lawyer of awkward?! I have my next character concept!"

...All I can think of is @Ganymede.

@Auspice The year the yarn (and/or other craft supplies) get nominated, that is the year this tradition will end. Trust me on this.

      Otherwise, this is brilliant. 😄

The craft supplies have been nominated. :
I keep picking up new hobbies and falling off the wagon. I gotta get rid of stuff I just don't use. But the yarn stays. All of the yarn. I knit/crochet enough to justify it. A lot of the fabric, too, as I still plan to someday make a tshirt quilt at least.

But clay, random beads, and other fiddly stuff I've just been toting around? That'll get given away.

      Moving.

That's all just moving. The whole packing stuff up, sorting stuff out. The whole process.

I am probably moving across the country again when my lease here is up (I've got a direction I want my career to go in and I gotta be in a specific place for it). I've decided, each month, starting in April, I am going to downgrade a 'category' of things.

April is clothes. Like not just the 'oh this doesn't fit' or 'this is holey' but 'I have to admit to myself that I will probably never wear this again'

I'm hoping it makes the actual move easier.

I don't play D&D anymore, but it looks like (on the surface), exactly what it needs. So many people play online now, via a hodgepodge of tools/sites.

I used to bake. A lot. I spent about 3 months coming up with a new cupcake recipe each week. Perfected a couple bread recipes. It was just sort of my joy.

But then I went through my divorce, life was in upheaval, and I just sort of lost it.

The three seasons that Netflix has of The Great British Baking Show has, however, renewed it in me. I began simple: peanut butter cookies. I've got plans in the works for a soda bread with cranberries (waiting for a day my migraine isn't so bad after work). And when I visit someone later this month who has a superior kitchen to my own, I plan to put together a rum and orange madeira cake.

I've missed this feeling so much.

      @Alamias

It's always surreal to run into a MU*er IRL like that. Like not pre-determined sort of deal.

Years ago, I went to a new TT game. Half the group and the ST I knew, the other half I didn't. One guy was introducing himself and also provided his usual online handle. Which was not a common one (I don't remember what it was, but it wasn't something you'd expect to see twice). Last I'd known him, he was on the other side of the country and we hadn't talked in about a year.

But then bam, same TT group, with no way of knowing the other would be there.

      re: Fate's Harvest, Jonah.

It's not often that I get to really play out conflict, where we both know consequences could be wildly negative, but go with it anyway because it's great RP/story.

It all worked out in the end for now, but Iris and Jonah clashing has been a lot of fun.

For a character I just sort of built on whimsy, Iris has been great fun to play and the amount of requests I get to RP kinda surprise me, but also make me feel kinda warm and squishy.

    • RE: Where's your RP at?

I had a character die due to a bad roll.

D&D game, years ago. The exit from the dungeon went under a lake. My character, being from the desert, couldn't swim. Another PC had to make rolls to basically lifeguard-haul her to the surface & shore. They botched the roll.

Survived an entire dungeon only to die in the final stretch.

It was sad, but it turned out for good RP for other folks and I moved on. Because I go into fully-statted games (like D&D, WoD, etc.) fully expecting that the dice could go that way.

I dunno guys. I'm on that Gen-X / Millennial cusp and I don't 'get' Snapchat or Tinder.

I must be old and stupid now!

I have once, and only once (in 18+ years), been on a game where the economy system worked. You're right, most of the time it fails miserably. And a lot of it comes down to time.

That game? Was in the early days of my MU*ing. So probably around the 16? years ago mark. When a fair number of us in the hobby were in high school, college, or didn't have kids yet (not all, obvs, but a good number). We had more time to devote to that shit.

Hell, I made tons of money because I was working part-time and homeschooled, with terrible insomnia. The '2-4 hours RL time flying from point A to point B' was no big deal.

Nowadays? Fuck that noise. Ain't nobody got time for that.

Economy systems are cool in theory, but finding the balance is hard. You have to be willing to throttle it hard... or else risk the people that have little to no RL demands dominating the entire game.
