    • RE: 'The Magicians' again -- time period?

If you're looking for a way to get rid of the canon characters (which I would highly recommend), there's already a convenient plot device to do that without having to go back in time. Use one of the timelines where they didn't succeed in killing the Beast and all died. Or say they all died after a different point and use that as your jumping off period.

I would go modern, or a few years into the future only.

I'm gonna go one step ahead and say don't base your game in Brakebills. The interesting part about the Magicians wasn't the magic university, it was Fillory.

The only way to actually fix this, imo, is to get the systems in and tested and then do a hard reboot/time skip/wipe. Beta!

      I agree.

major part of setting is a school from which you graduate, people may want time to go faster so it's conceivable to ICly complete the program within the MU's lifespan.

If the major part of the setting is a school from which you graduate, why would you want IC time to go fast and conceivably have people graduating and not interacting with the main setting?

I'm a fan of faster time pacing as long as there's a lot of handwavium that plots aren't timeblocked. But that being said like ... think of your setting and try to be realistic about it, because if the POINT OF THE GAME is to be a student at Brakebills (and there's nothing to do past the point of being a student), then maybe don't speed-rush it to graduation.

    • RE: Game Pitch: Three Letter Agency (modern horror setting - X-Files, Fringe, Control, SCP, etc)

I'm not entirely sure why you would need an entire customized system. Are the PCs in this game not "normal"? i.e. do they have supernatural powers?

I'd play a 90s game if someone made it. As long as there were only human PCs tho.

@Lotherio Yeah I mean, regardless of what sort of time structure you're set on, I can't say enough about a "date hand-waive" policy. Like, the expectation that you can only play Christmas ON Christmas, or the birthday ON THE EXACT DATE, is ridiculous and should never be imposed on anybody

The dropping connection thing is a big issue. Even if my phone screen went black/rest, I'd lose my connection to the game.

A Downton Abbey type thing where the two spheres are the nobility and the servants in one big manor house.

That wouldn't be hard at all to make on Ares. I'd definitely play even though I assume it'd rapidly dissolve into "nobles TSing servants: the MUSH" lol

    • RE: Seeking DIY Advice

What are you going to do to make people want to RP with one another and be open to RPing with people outside of their comfort circle?

How many people are you able to sustain GMing for? What are you going to do if your game gets 3-5x that? What are you going to do if the inverse happens and you get 3-5x less?

Are you going to allow STs/player run plots? What tools are you going to give STs, how involved are you going to be, and can you handle the level of involvement you expect to have?

Finally, how passionate are you about actually running a game, and how passionate are you about running THIS game that you're building? That goes a long way, I think, in the "buy in" that people need to play there.

Pretty sure it'll just pave the way to players asking staff, "If I pay extra can you GM me becoming a mushroom mage, controlling all fungi" or something.

    • RE: GMs and Players

@derp said in GMs and Players:

Because doing the opposite of this and just taking everyone at face value is how you get people like Spider, and some of the people at games like The Network right now, just making random accusations and expecting that staff will act on it because they said so, to the detriment of those not in the person's in-group.

So I'm definitely not saying take everyone at face value or accept 'random' accusations against people and unilaterally ban without any evidence whatsoever. I'm talking for extreme cases like stalking or people who have been knowingly abusive in the community. Like if someone came to me and said Ruiz was on my game, I wouldn't even blink twice even if I couldn't prove it. If I thought a new character was the person on my no-fly list, who have a HISTORY of being abusive crazy manipulators? There's the door. The risk to my game by banning someone like that is minimal; the risk of keeping them until they 'show' themselves is huge.

And honestly it sounds like you got burnt and that sucks and there are definitely people on games who have their own cliques that cozy up to staff and get rid of people they don't like. It goes back to staff needing to create a safe and collaborative community.
