    • RE: GMs and Players

@derp said in GMs and Players:

Honestly, I think it's also about what kinds of players do you want to attract. Do you want the ones that care about rules, and process, and transparency, even if it takes time? Or do you want the ones that prefer immediate gut-check judgment calls based on personal beliefs and social opinions? Those are two different kinds of player, and while neither of them is neccessarily inherently wrong -- they both have some positives and negatives -- they're not really compatible viewpoints.

I think when you break it down like that, you are grossly misrepresenting me and what we are all trying to say here and it's very condescending. I want to attract players who: want to have fun, are not distasteful, and are not going to create a negative environment. That is it.

@reimesu I'm sorry that happened to you. I don't think anybody here is suggesting that they would ban someone based on a whisper campaign. That's the sort of negative, toxic environment I don't want anywhere near my game.

    • RE: MUs That We Would Love To Make (But Won't)

@il-volpe I think those games tend to be hard to run for longer than a few months, just because you have so many different factions and not enough people willing to tell stories for them. And then if you stick to one trope (like General Hospital or Chicago Med) then you end up telling the same stories over and over eventually.

It's not really hard to build a game like that, it's just difficult to keep people engaged and buying into the concept. Those types of games just too easily turn into sandbox mode, IMO.

    • RE: Moon River MUSH

Tattooed boy & tattooed girl are REALLY common on small town modern day MUSHes, so I wouldn't jump to conclusions on PBs alone. Having played Stranger than Fiction and been on the 'receiving end' of that weirdness, I am pretty sure it's not the same people lol

@auspice having lived in new mexico, it's not as cool of a setting as you think it would be.

No strings attached, people just get to live there. It is working.

There are always strings attached. ALWAYS.

Where is the money coming to sustain these houses? Who gets to decide which 35 homeless people get the tiny house? What happens to all the others?

    • RE: Horror MUX - Discussion

I read in this thread I think that this isn't a good game for a casual player. I have been wanting to check it out but I have about 2 or 3 hours an evening to devote on work nights. Is that enough time or should I just avoid?

    • RE: The Savage Skies

@Seraphim73 I don't play your game but this recent dip in activity looks really new for you guys. But it's also October, when games traditionally see a dip in activity due to the ramp up of holidays, etc., along with the added stress of kids still out of school and work still needing to be done. You may also be seeing a decline of activity due to you being at the "end" of a plot, whereas games like The Network are at the beginning of a new plot, so more people might feel like they can get their foot in the door there right now and might be playing TSS less at the moment.

I'm not really keen on the idea of polling the playerbase in general bc I don't feel like it really does anything except make people start thinking the game is on it's last legs? If I were you I would just head into the next adventure. As long as you & Blu are actively running plots that aren't blocked to people, people will play.

Every time I drive through New Mexico I think how cool it'd be to set a game there.

      I also lived there.

Unless your plan is to set your game in either Albuquerque or Santa Fe, you're gonna have to set it in a small, economically depressed town with a considerable methamphetamine problem and the only store for miles is Walmart.

Or you could pretendy funtime it up.

Excuse you, ABQ also has a problem with meth and walmart was my fav place to go outside of the cracker barrel

    • RE: The Woodward Agency

@aria the answer to your question was replied with honest well intentions. We were going for a game feel of silly, kinda campy, with the occasional splash of scary funny.

This can all be deduced from our help and theme files, which can also be read to understand the feel we are going for.

Please also feel free to stroll thru the locations to see how we built the game.

    • RE: The Work Thread

@buttercup Yeah I would be nervous too, especially buying a business for the price of only the equipment. Are there no other assets on the books? Cash, accounts receivable, are you buying the contracts and customer lists for that price too? Cuz damn, IDK, I'd almost feel like I was robbing this guy if that was the case LOL

    • RE: Incentives for RP

On GH, I will regularly award players with luck points that I see being inclusive and 'sharing' plot hooks with other characters. I am always on the lookout for players who rope in other characters outside of their "typical" social circles and I think good RP behavior should be rewarded.

That being said, I have to agree with @faraday to a point - I'm never going to set up a REGULAR reward system, because the point of playing a game is to tell stories. But hey, every so often? I'll give people kudos as a thank you for spreading the love.

@crayon I'd kill for a xanth game or a neverwhere game!!! I have had a zombie survival game in the back of my mind for awhile but I've never been sure how to get over some of the issues (mostly involving the death of characters and how I think 'random zombie raid' would get tiring after awhile even if you mixed it up with other plots)

What drives me crazy is when a staff has an NPC but that they use to be the star of a plot. No. Stop that. That is for PCs. If you want to be the star of your show, make a PC.

Addendum: ALSO PLEASE STOP TSING PEOPLE WITH YOUR NPC'S AUGH

Say it once more WITH FEELING!!!!

I can see that humans-only cutting 50% of the possible players but only in a setting that typically has non-humans as expected playable characters, maybe? Like, if you make a game in a setting with dwarves but I can't play a dwarf, you can go to hell and take your game with you, which I feel is a perfectly reasonable reaction.

Oh, for sure. If I log in to Middle Earth by Night and can't play a Hobbit Vampire, I'm probably gonna be bummed.

But if you're thinking about making a game, and you're like "WE NEED ALL THE PLAYABLE RACES OR NO ONE WILL PLAY HERE," then you're 31 flavors of wrong, friend.

You want to play a hobbit vampire? WHO EVEN ARE YOU?!
