Wow, this guy is a serious asshat. Can't imagine playing on a game run by him and some chick that is a legendary level PHB.

They're simply grandiose, predatory, and dedicated to their own sense of importance. I understand why a decision has been made not to post The Infamous Description here, but the whole flack about that shows how crazy these two are. Who knows what they would have done if they hadn't been able to attach themselves to and profit from someone else's creative work--probably started the Swedish equivalent of Westboro Baptist Church.

@Thisnameistaken My god. Won't your dentist see you and then delay filing the claim for the 48 hours needed for things to get fixed? Honestly, if my dentist was going to let me have a broken tooth and exposed nerve for eight hours, much less 48, over some easily verifiable insurance fuck-up that will be resolved, I'd go to a different dentist right away. Either that or I'd get someone at the management company to call the dentist, explain that they fucked up and are fixing it, and assure the dentist that you are covered. It is just inhuman to let bureaucratic bullshit trump someone in pain.

Character Concept Contest (any setting, genre, or game)
      http://optionalrealities.com/forums/index.php?topic=198.0

This might be the breakout contest for musoapbox users to take 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. No more pesky restrictions or game mechanics in it. Just good old character pitching.

Does this include character descriptions? I've managed to dig up a classic one I might want to flesh out and submit. (I think the character's name was Ishtar.)

Again, there's a lot of talking past each other going on.

It seems to me that having your character die for good makes sense either in a non-RP game where you're just putting another quarter in or on a RP game where combat is rarer, more considered, and more serious. If that's the case, then any MUSH on which I've played qualifies as "permadeath"; it is just much harder to end up dead as opposed to injured/maimed/out of commission for a while. When I've had a character die, it was as the result of choices made before and during the scene and with the understanding that it ended my playing that character. It was done with my consent--really, at my suggestion--and to enable the character who killed mine to further his character's story, but that didn't make the death any less permanent.

Really, the "permadeath" requirement for listing on OR is addressed to MUDs where the resurrection mechanic is essentially OOC, so it should have nothing to do with other kinds of games where resurrection either makes sense IC or doesn't occur. The king and the mercenaries almost surely wouldn't happen even on a Lords 'n' Ladies MU* because the players immediately call shenanigans.

I cheat, too. (I have amblyopia, so I close my right eye to force my left one to see the characters on the far left end of the line). I haven't had to take a driving test for nearly 40 years and ten changes of state.

I first saw Star Trek in its first season, just before I turned seven. I was still watching it when I saw 2001: A Space Odyssey in the theater just before I turned nine. I'm sure that I would have been a far different person--and that my life would be far poorer--without both of these things.

I've always found the MUD side of our hobby to somewhat have the expectation of being like, super ultra professional rather than super casual like in MUSHes and such.

This explains why my first thought to @Jeshin's "a community is a board of directors" language was, "gigglesnort Yes, and I am CEO of my pants."

I still think it's silly, but seeing it in action I'm coming to the conclusion that the people who organize the games feel it's important.

Or feel that they are important. It's all game-playing in one form or another, and this "I'm a professional" schtick is part of the administrator game. It's a business simulator without the risks of running a real business. People who are this serious about it deserve about as much pity (or derision--take your pick) as someone who claims to be a marksman because he spends hours playing a FPS.

If I want to hear about alcoholism and addiction as the subject of somebody's discourse, I'll go to a meeting. If I want to to read something where alcoholism is a one factor shaping a story about many other things, I"ll read Charles Bukowski. I can't imagine reading someone's "triumph over self-inflicted adversity" story unless they're damn funny and unsparing of themselves. Otherwise, it's just another Afterschool Special.

I can't get being "so STEM" that you can't muster interest in any other subject, though. I grew up reading myth, fantasy, and my father's issues of Scientific American (from the 60s and 70s when they were good). The only reason I never liked lab sciences when I was first in school was that I was too much of a klutz and a fuck-up to be able to do anything right. Yes, crappy instructors can kill anything, but I've known some excellent and rigorous ones in the humanities.

Given that I am, objectively, the biggest fuck-up in my immediate family,* it is really not fair to any of the others that I should be its last surviving member--which, as of about an hour ago when my sister died of cancer, I am. Life's not fair, though, is it?

Ignore this. I'll get my ticket booked as soon as I find out when the funeral is, then go to bed, get up in the morning, and at least look like I have it together.

*Being the drunk, the pot-head, and the neurotic and chronically irresponsible dickhead who couldn't manage to finish college until his 50s because he was too busy whining to get his shit together. Yep, that's me. No surprise there.

Serenity MUSH was also coded so that every single fucking time anyone entered or exited a room, the MUSH emitted three messages.

Can this game have a deadly space virus that forces people to typo every other word and demand to be repeatedly kidnapped, preferably while having crippling bouts of diarrhea? It could be called Bricenbrooke flu.

Dear Company I Really Want To Be Hired By,

You've got those open jobs up on your website and I've applied for two of them. One I applied for a week before you refreshed the notice, the other a week after. And yet, my application's status is still listed as "New" for both positions. I've even called to ask if there was someone I could speak to in order to get my application reviewed. Even if your answer is "no, thanks" I'd appreciate some kind of feedback so I know what's going on because...I actually REALLY want to work for you. Crush my dreams or make my fantasy a reality, but please stop making me live in limbo.

If I went back through my job search materials for 2011 - 2015, I bet I would identify more than a dozen schools that have yet to respond to my application. At least some of these still have the application listed as "new" on their HR sites. This doesn't count the schools that sent rejection letters over a year after someone else was hired, those that sent me a rejection letter months after I formally withdrew from consideration after taking my current position, or the one that rejected me with a generic email after paying to bring me to campus and put me up in a hotel for two nights. Job searches are just all-around shitty.

Doing a 'historical' game based only on information one can get from Wikipedia is... not a good idea imho.

Basing it on opinionated historians, when one can find historians that support the extreme opposites as well, is just as not good of an idea either.

If you think that all historians offer is opinion rather than inference based on evidence and reason, then another problem with this idea may be that you don't really understand history, either.

Here's a proposal: set it later, make the PCs all Muslims, Jews, or Mozarabs, and have any forces of the Reconquista be mooks. That will give you a setting with lots of "exotic color" (exotic, at least, for many of the players), opportunity for intra- and inter-group conflict, and the religious-based conflict people will expect without PC-driven religious conflict that is going to spill over into OOC arguments on channels, etc. I'd think that, if no one can play a Christian crusader and any Christians in the game are going to be culturally Arabic, then anyone arguing Christian vs. Muslim on a channel would be clearly outside of what the game is about and easier to identify as an asshat picking a fight.

I was interested, but when I saw a character on the roster whose bio stated he has a romantic attraction to another PC, that turned me off. I don't want to play romance, and I especially don't want to play it with a stranger just because we picked particular characters off a roster.

Christ. I spend weeks trying to pound this block-headed antiquarianism out of my students. They, too, think that because no golden tablets and spectacles are presented to them, then everything is just opinion. So be it.

I know that, over time, I have come to realize that I have no desire to dedicate my playtime to practicing history, but more power to you if you do. I hope you're not too disappointed when, assuming your L&L game opens, you realize that all anybody wants from your game's backstory is that it's not painfully inconsistent and that they get to be special in it. The rest of it likely will be cheerfully ignored, which is what most history deserves, anyway.

Every other time I read discussion threads about books I liked and encounter people who seem unable/unwilling to spell or use even basic grammar correctly. These people are supposed to be bibliophiles by definition, what the hell? Why is the content indistinguishable from a random WoW thread's? Argh.

There's nothing quite like a grammatical failure in a post complaining about others' grammar, is there?
