      @three-eyed-crow Yeh. I don't get it. It's especially jarring when those positions of authority also come with responsibilities to create and distribute plots and RP and they don't do any of that, or do it once every blue moon, lol.

      Speaking of rostered characters specifically maybe they think that's the right way to play their character?

      "I don't think Batman would go socialize" versus "I think Batman would go on this mission to rescue hostages".

      If you're playing Batman and you can't have a conversation with Robin, or Catwoman, or -- I mean, yeah, I guess someone could rationalize it that way, but it doesn't make it interactive RP and something that's fun for everyone else.

      "Coffee shop" rp (AKA rp amongst yourselves) should be at least half of your rp on a game. Otherwise, you probably aren't roleplaying a character so much as playing the world's crappiest video game.

      More or less, yah.

      If all you're doing is showing up for Events, then I'm unlikely to want to interact with you during events, too. Happens a lot on roster games and/or with people who are in positions of IC authority -- they'll show up for their one event scene every once in a while to avoid idling out, throw their authority around, and then go back to being non-existent.

      @coin
      It's more modern society+modern technology. Modern values are all about protecting life. In a good game you can't have those values.

      Imagine any RPG where the characters weren't allowed to kill monsters or other people because the cops would investigate, track them down and throw them in prison. It would suck.

      For a game to be fun, you can have either modern technology or modern morals, but not both.

      People cared about human life when Jack the Ripper was killing but they didn't have the tech to catch him.

      In Blade Runner and Cyberpunk type settings they have far more advanced technology but the value of life is low so they only investigate the crimes that victimize the "important" people.

      You can have the power to stop evil or the will to stop evil, but if your game has both in it, it's going to become boring fast.

      I think this is the reason most World Of Darkness and Super-hero games die a slow death.
      The older and/or more powerful characters can stop the less powerful ones from doing anything that can cause dramatic tension or kill/capture them the moment they do so there is never any real danger to anyone.

      Lol, what?

      Again I say: if you can't find a way to tell that sort of story because of modern technology or modern morals? The storyteller is the problem. Not the setting.

      @lotherio Sounds fun to me. The problem with places like that though is that if you set games in modern times, with modern tech and modern social standards it just turns out boring.

      The world is too safe today.
      That's why star wars always had their characters rocketing off to some dirt planet like Tatooine, a frozen planet or a planet already controlled by enemy droids.

      Technologically advanced societies always end up being boring and crime free.
      Look at Star Trek. They spent hours every week reliving Shakespeare plays, old books and visiting beaches in a holodeck. The only place anything actually interesting happened was deep space far away from the federation.

      ...

      I mean, not to be contrary, but what?

      If modern technology is barring you from making a game feel/be dangerous, the problem isn't the setting, it's the storyteller(s).

      What are the best MU* clients lately? I still use tinyfugue, because I have a strong preference for command lines over GUIs, but I think a thread where we talk about these clients is worthwhile.

      I STRONGLY encourage you to try BeipMU. It has all the versatility of any other MU client and is actively developed with a helpful Discord community/server where you can go for any questions and help with triggers and scripts.

      Without TOS there would be no Star Trek.

      But without Dracula, there would be no Twilight. Just saying.

      Dracula's more TNG to The Vampyre's TOS. Also I don't get the point. Are you insinuating that the new Star Trek properties are to TOS what Twilight is to Dracula?

      I'm saying that if a sequel's quality reflect on the original material, then that goes both ways. If you prefer, pretend I said that without TOS, there would be no Voyager, or no Star Trek V.

      Certainly more consistent to the comparisons being drawn, at least.

      But I've enjoyed the CW series along with the two they started on their service, Swamp Thing and Stargirl. I think they jumped to their own tv service too fast though.

      CW barely deserves its own channel, much less its own service. But at least they were smart enough to not charge for it, so points there. Still, I can only imagine the quality of the shows on the subscription based on what makes it to the network line up. I guess they're going for the quantity versus quality metric?

      While the CW does have its own service, Stargirl and Swamp Thing were both on DC Universe, which also had Titans, Young Justice, Doom Patrol, Harley Quinn, etc. All of these except Swamp Thing (which was cancelled) are moving to HBO Max exccept for I think Stargirl which is moving straight to the CW.

      The CW app's only 'original' programming, IIRC, was the Vixen animated miniseries.

      The current mutant/human power dynamic has been completely upended. Mutants now have their own homeland, the living isle of Krakoa, which is also the only source for drugs which have different effects, one of which is extending human lifespans. This is translated into economic, and thus political, power.

      Also, as of Planet-Sized X-Men,

      Krakoa's sister island Arakko, home of millions of ancient, war-like mutants, has been teleported to mars, which was terraformed in minutes by the combined efforts of several Omega mutants, and has now been declared to the galaxy as planet Arakko, capital of the Sol Solar System.

      Its through application and not on the web

      There is a form on their site to do the claiming.

      Not a solution to your problem, but still.

      This looks new, its a good step. I don't know if it gives me a confirmation number (peace of mind), but that's a good step. I stand corrected on this account.

      The app form on the wiki has been there for months, since it was there when I looked at the game in March.

      Like, if you're deterred because you have to log in as a Guest and say 'hey, I applied for [character] and never got a mail' or whatever... like, is that really the issue? Not being able to log in as something other than a Guest? ~.^

      So, I came across this last night in my youtube feed. And I have to tell you, this hit every single bit of nostalgia that light up the 5 year old me that still lives in some unknown corner of 38 year old me.

      I was never much into the She-Ra remake on Netflix(The Voltron was better, fight me)but a He-Man remake that's being overseen by Kevin Smith with a Mark Hamill as Skeletor channeling his Joker real hard? And being animated by the same company that did the Castlevania series?

      Yeah. Yeah, I'm all about this. I'm here for it.

      Bo Burnham's Inside absolutely demolished me. Gloomy comedy with a healthy dose of all the shit we've been feeling in quarantine. Hit me really hard, as I have a lot of the same issues he's coping with. Well worth the watch, but don't expect it to be light or always particularly fun. (Trigger warning for depression, anxiety, suicidal musings.)

      It's quite fucking great, though.

      Available on Netflix.

      I've been rewatching Buffy the Vampire Slayer for the six billionth time because I've had a super bad nostalgia streak, and this time I've been following along with the Buffering podcast, which does episodic commentary, just so I can get a different perspective on what I saw.

      Anyway, they recently posted this meme and I NEVER MADE THIS CONNECTION, EVER

      Holy shit, ANYA'S BEST FRIEND WAS ORIGINALLY CECILLY, THE LADY WHO REJECTED SPIKE WHEN HE WROTE HER A GOOFY POEM AS A HUMAN AND LEAD TO HIS DEATH

      Then he gets vamped, something really shitty must have happened to her and she became a vengeance demon, and then 150ish years later they get to have this fun awkward little moment.

      Hahaha man. Fan for like 15 years and tons of rewatches and I never caught that, because it's so subtle!

      Another Good TV to watch, though I haven't finished it, is Amazon's 'Them'. Very good though some have described it as 'racist torture porn', but its not surprising considering the setting and the theme. Plus, in my opinion it is very much warranted that they show these things. If you want a horror series, I recommend it. Here's hoping it ends strongly too.

      @cupcake said in Good TV:

      @cadi I watched a good portion of Them and couldn't get through it; maybe it was the timing of the show's premiere but it just felt to me like it was trying really hard to be Lovecraft Country.

      It started production before Lovecraft Country but was in development hell for too long.

      @cadi said in Good TV:

      @cupcake Admittedly I haven't seen Lovecraft County.

      It's very, very good. And different enough in plotline from the book that either will surprise you a little if you enjoy one and then the other.

      Jupiter's Legacy was very good! I binge watched the crap out of it.

      It was. My only gripe is that the special effects for their powers and the fight choreography is not on par for contemporary superhero shows. But it was otherwise really good. Even the aging make-up effects weren't (too) jarring.
